It's not hacking in my home I'm worried about, I'm behind a hardware firewall and also the software firewall that comes with OSX. My concern is packet snoops intercepting and decoding sensitive data. I've done it before(as an experiment) so I know how easy it can be, you wouldn't believe some of the stuff I've seen. And credit cards are different from bank account numbers, it's a lot harder to track someone who withdraws a bunch of cash from your account than to just tell your credit card company a charge was not yours.
well, anyone using a public terminal to do online banking should know they're taking a huge risk anyway. I've been using computers since my Atari 400 and still won't do any banking over the 'net. paranoid? maybe. but safe
I was cleaning out the cellar recently and found my old Atari 400, I missed the old dog! I also have a couple 800xl's and an XT(a rebranded and recased 800xl basically, marketed as a game system). I almost have my own Atari museum going here.
FSAA will be disabled on the Xbox version then? I only played the original once or twice(because they cancelled the Mac version) and was looking forward to some Half Life finally.
I try to use Kurgan or MacLeod depending if I'm feeling good or evil(usually Kurgan). Unfortunately I'm not the only one who's seen Highlander so I can't always use one of those.
Angelina Jolie is hotter than her, plus she's a bit crazy which is always sexy... AND she's Lara Croft on the big screen so I guess I'm not 100% off-topic here in the game section...
I always thought this looked like an interesting game, but I read in a review that performance was less than stellar(Mac version). They were using an iMac G4@800mhz(well above the stated requirement of a 350mhz G3), so I'm afraid my old Pismo 400 would have problems running it. Unfortunately without a demo to try it out first I have no choice but to pass on this one. Why don't companies just make demos of everything? If there were an Xbox port I'd rent it.
the same questions have been asked about some of Tom Clancy's work. I remember reading that he was paid a visit by the FBI asking where he got his classified information, only it turned out everything he used was publicly available. My thought is that suppressing information will not prevent terrorism, only when would-be terrorists change the way they think of the free world will it stop./rant
with G5's announced, why would they still produce any G3 machines? G5 for pro, G4 for consumer seems the path to go. An iBook with a G4 and Altivec should run Jaguar and Panther much better than the G3 versions. They could use features and clock speed to differentiate between iBook G4 and Powerbook G4 until the G5 Powerbooks are ready.
I'll wait til the systems are actually shipping and I've seen some independent real-world benchmarks before making any judgements. Xlr8yourmac.com should have some good information once they ship, and maybe barefeats.com
why would they mention AMD? cuz they invented Hypertransport? Do Dell or Sony mention Apple when they release a Firewire product? Not a flame, just a point to consider. As for the PCI-X controller, I don't think Apple manufactures any of it's own motherboard components, even their Firewire controllers are outsourced(Tandy I think). They have the same choice of suppliers as every other board-builder.
responses to comments:
- I should have said "64-bit Personal Computer", because yes Sun and others have had 64-bit desktops for years but they are classified as Workstations(not meant for the average home user)
- to be lawful I should have said "Unix-like" or something like that because yes we all know they aren't certified Unix
My point is manufacturer benchmarks are bunk(see recent Nvidia articles) and if you are considering buying this machine based solely on SPEC then this machine is not for you. I think researchers will appreciate the 64-bit architecture and artists will love having 8 gigs of RAM (if they can afford it).
it was even tougher on the Mac since the manual was for PC. The piece of information I needed was that it would not run over TCP/IP, only IPX which didn't come with a default Mac OS 8 install. After I figured that out it ran great. Carma2 was a much better game than the original(3D peds), and it runs great on my Pismo Powerbook. A gamepad is essential though, playing Carma on a keyboard just hurts after awhile. I would love a Carma2 remake for Xbox with upgraded graphics and Live support.
EA owning Rockstar would be bad for us Xbox'ers.... EA doesn't like Xbox Live for whatever reason so any online components would be left out of the Xbox versions of their games. As for the articles' comment about a big game for Xbox early next year, if it's Vice City I hope they upgrade it to take advantage of the hardware in the green machine, I wasn't impressed with the PS2 graphics.
So in your experience the Afterburner is better than the external lighting devices out there? Was the installation hard(ie. is damage to the GBA possible)? I don't have a GBA but two of my friends do and this seems like a good solution for $25. I thought it was a backlight so thanks for clarifying.
Sony will never make a CF or SD tuner, they love using their own 'standards', and will never give up on MemoryStick. They are still making mini-disc products for God's sake! I've never known even 1 person who owned any sort of mini-disc hardware, and I know a lot of gadget freaks. A 3rd party may, however, buy the tuner chip from Sony and make a CF or SD card.

that's what I'm talkin about! bisexual and totally wacky, gotta love her!

we could tell you but then we'd have to kill you - Verizon

best...job...ever...
well, word processing hasn't changed all that much either in the last five years.
I read Gobi would not have Altivec, but it's successor Mojave(750vx), would. I don't know what the timetable on the Mojave chips are though.

cool, I hadn't heard of this game before. The fact that some ex-Blizzard guys are involved is interesting. I'll definitely be watching for this one.
I'm still waiting for an Xbox RTS. Someone port Myth or Starcraft or something similar. pretty please?

They're giving us a desktop UNIX running on 64-bit hardware, what else can you ask for? sheesh

I did not know that, you learn something new every day.
