came to work this morning and found out my company is buying Nanos for all the employees (Our CEO is on the Apple board and we've had a very good year). So I'm on the verege of creaming in my shorts until I find out that although I work harder and longer than half the people here, I won't be getting one becuase technically I'm an Intern.

the amount of kiddie porn, however you measure it, is irrelevant. the number of people who produce and consume KP is growing because access is so much easier.
How do you figure? Let me clarify and expand on my original comment. What I should have said was; has the amount of child porn and child porn producers/consumers increased or has the Internet made it easier for the FBI to find them, leading to the increase in cases above. Where it would have been neccessary prior to the WWW for the feds to infiltrate kiddy porn rings the net gives them much more anonymity and easier access.
I have no doubt that the number of consumers of child porn has increased, thats not at issue. I'm questioning the 26 fold number. What would be interesting is to run a comparison of kiddy porn cases and cases of child sexual abuse in that period and see if the increase is comparable. To simply cite the increase in the number of FBI cases and to claim a cause with no further evidence is incorrect reasoning and proves nothing.

When was the last time you and your new wife had a threesome with some other guy and you and he both shoved your cocks in her ass at the same time thinking "yeah, this is normal?"
Well, I haven't done this personally. I'm not a homophobe, but I'd have to draw the line at sharing an orfice with someone else's genitals. There are consenting adults however who engage in this sorth of thing all the time, purely for their own pleasure.
People are wierd in all kinds of fun and interesting ways. So what exactly is normal? If it's not your thing then just don't do/watch it.

Maybe I am a rare case, but I've known a few people who were just addicts. Whether its because of brain chemistry, psychology whatever.
My grandfather for example who never smoked and drank far less than was considered normal in his society at the time, was addicted to sugar. He'd go through cases of soda a month. Later in his life he developed diabetes and still eat too much sugar even after his first stroke. The second one killed him. I've gone by AA meetings and seen guys lined outside chain smoking. Addicts usually kick one habit only to get another, if they're lucky its a less dangerous one. I had a cousin (heroin) who ran. Everytime he felt the need he'd start running. Somtimes he'd run until he collapsed and the cops with bring him back home. No one knew if he was running from the urge or running for the endorphine kick.
For whatever reason I've managed to avoid being one of thos people.
Frankly I think Porn is like everything else marginally enjoyable. Some people will abuse it and become addicted some won't. Hell I know a lot of my peers who are addicted to work (14hr days?). But instead of calling them addcits, people call them "successful". This has more to do with the person than the thing.
All this escalation talk reminds me of all the Marijuana leads to harder drugs talk in the mid 80's.
I'm still waiting to get a sudden urge to shoot some heroin into my eyeball.

But then came the Web. Between 1996 and 2004, child-porn cases handled by the FBI increased 23 fold.
But does this mean that child porn has actually increased or that the internet has just made it easier to find? I hate when people try to use a statistic like this to prove some point, becuase it doesn't really prove anything.
So they want go from "We know were right and our product is better, but see for yourself." To "We know were right, but if you don't agree here's a metaphorical gun in the face to convince you."
Do these guys really think this going to make Big Software change its practises? Bad move, boys and girls. You can't win by playing their game.
Not saying all Cops are evil (Meter-maids on the other hand...), but the next time someone steals your stuff and you find a cop who gives damn beyond filing the inital report let me know...
They're too damn busy for the "little stuff", but not to busy to cross the street to write me a ticket for riding my bike on an empty sidewalk.
Evbolution is overrated. Sure it gave us opposable thumbs and large brains but then again it also gave us Cancer and a host of other bad things. Time to kick that bitch to the curb.
I wonder if anyone emntioned this to him. He seems to have an agenda. Anyone who has one toe in the Scientific community knows that even if a paper rpoves something its not true till a bunch of other try it and come to the same conclusion, or else we'd all be driving Cold Fusion cars.
man, I seriously thought that good ole DDS would be public domain, or atleast available. Pretty soon you won't be able to talk with buying a bunch of Licenses.
Maybe I'm just lucky, but the vast majority of my bosses have been really cool people. I even had a boss whose techs kept quitting because of his gruff demeanor and I got along great with him, and he turned out to be the guy I learned the most from and had the best time working for.
So I don't know maybe its all in how you deal with people.
I'm an ex-CS major too. My last employer explained it to me this way. The point of getting a degree isn't so that your qualified to do something. Its to show that given the chance and some guidance you might be able to learn to do something. That the only reason you need one.
It's proven to be true too. I still don't have a degree but have still managed to get a string of jobs I'm "not qualified" for (on past experience and word of mouth)and a lot of the times wind up working with people who know less than I do, but make twice or three times as much becuase they have a degree. Its a shitty world.
I just find it odd that they were able to find monkeys that would volunteer for this experiment.
I don't find it odd at all, I mean monkeys need time mor ethan anyone. Its hard enough for them find time to jerk off and fling poo at passerbys, then they have to go forrage for food too. Why do you think they're always picking lice off each other and eating it. Not because it tastes good.
I want a pear tree in place of a Tombstone. I figure if people have to stand over my rotting corpse and be all mopey they should atleast some pears out of it.
I put that down tot he sequel curse. All the non-sequel movies they've done so far (Bound and The Matrix)have been kickass. Sad news, a 90 ft Natalie Portman with a shaved head would have had me twicthing in my sleep for weeks.
But As long as Serenity isn't delayed again I'm still flying high.
Yes, this guy could comit a crime in-game based on the rules (features?) of the game, but what he did is still ethically wrong.
Why exactly? I'm not supporting his actions but lets look at this realistically. Video games for there entire existence have been carefully created environments. We as players have always assumed that if a game allows you to do something you should because its a "feature".If it turned out that an ability was not intentionally created then it was determined to be a bug and fixed.
Does anyone play GTA and not carjack random drivers or mug passerbys etc? No, because that a feature of the game, thats why people play it. There might be consequences but they've always been gamespace consequences for gamespace actions.
To make a game where its possible to mug someone and then politely ask people not to do it or you'll arrest them (in meatspace) flys in the face of 30 years of game design. It might make sense at some point but we're not there yet.

and only the most mundane parts of concept cars ever make it into production. Nothing to see here.
Are we really? I trade a 100 Doom 3 and Quake 4, FEAR, Far Cry or GTA clone for one Homeworld, Black & White or Freespace .
All we get are clones with a new (usually graphical) gimic, while real innovative games get left in the dust. I'm not doing fin at all.
