  1. Re:open markets on iRiver to Build In-Dash Digital HD Players · · Score: 1

Since when are iPods of superior quality? iRiver playes, for one, have more features and most importantly recording capabilities (for how long have Apple been promising to deliver that?)

  2. Correction on iRiver to Build In-Dash Digital HD Players · · Score: 4, Interesting

These numbers are applicable for the US. I guess the situation is a bit different on a worldwide scale, as iPods are not an "in" thing in Europe by any standards, as well as fairly unknown here in Finland.

This probably involves re-encoding songs to AAC, as well as some jumbo-mumbo with DRM. I really doubt they managed to hack iPod per se, just marketing smoke and mirrors for obvious practices.

  6. Re:Huh? Who made that claim? on Examining Some Open Source Myths · · Score: 1

I agree that this all is in the eyes of beholder, but the fact that Windows is still a dominant desktop OS is telling something. I tried to migrate to Linux (Fedora Core 1 w/ Gnome to be specific), but the GUI felt very awkward and jaggy. Proportions of different elements and fonts are way off, animation is slow and makes the whole computer feel slow, the default choice of colours is gloomy and so on. Linux offers me no benefit over XP (other than some moral issues), so I went back to XP. I am sure that *nix GUI will improve greatly over the coming years, but in my opinion the current state of GUI on Linux systems is not match to XP or OSX.

No, he doesn't. A quote from the article I know that I, for one, having over 20 years experience writing software, find myself in the odd position of realizing that if I write something independently, then there is basically not a chance in hell of being able to sell it or make money directly from it. Sure, I can sell "support", but to be honest the idea of answering phones and emails all day really isn't my idea of a fun time.

I think many people are missing the point here. Yes it is true, that internet access at local libraries does not necessarily increase reading, but on the other hand it keeps teens from the street. Since every local library here had got decent computers and internet access, I'v been seeing more and more teenagers hanging out in libraries. Cannot be a bad thing after all.

They recently upgraded the entire computer network at the local libraries here (Helsinki, Finland). Compaq mini-PCs with sleazy design, LCD monitors and a copy of Windows XP installed on each computer. The only thing those computer are intended for is web browsing. Internet Explorer is run in a kiosk mode, which theoretically makes it impossible to run anything else (but that's not true in practice). This raises a question. Do you really need Windows XP and a fairly modern computer to provide a simple interface for web surfing? I don't know if they had a deal with Microsoft about serious discounts / free copies of MS software But if they didn't, all those thousands of copies of WinXP surely seem to be a great waste of money. I am not a Linux zealot, but Linux seems to be an ideal candidant for such a task (contrary to Windows XP with all its bells and whistles)

RTFA. This is not a Windows flaw, but an exploit in those firewalls. Blaming Microsoft for a 3rd party software vendor's fault is rather irrational. And besides how many exploits have been found in let's say bind/sendmail in the past? Personally I've never come across any of those firewalls, and I doubt any of them represents a major part of the personal firewall market.

The simple truth is poor performance. So far, no system has been able to match faces better than 60-80% in real life tests. That is still far too poor to be really useful for police work and other, similar purpose. Uhm, this might be true for facial or fingerprint scans, but the fault rate for retina scanning systems is equal to zero. So the article authour is right, ethical issues and high costs are two main reasons why such systems are not widely adopted.

Such a practice scheme has been around for a while in Russia. Some publishers are wise enough to sell PC games for as low as 10$ per boxed version and 5-6$ per cd only (compare to 2-3$ for a pirated cd). And the most interesting part is that people do actually buy these licensed products. I guess if Sony gets their prices right, Chinese people will buy their products.
