"Evolution is a very clumsy feeling program with a lack of fluidity. Getting it to work with the MS Exchange plugin works about half the time (tried it on many distributions) and it's just a pain to use in the first place."
Go ask Microsoft why they lock down their products the way they do, it's not really the OSS community's fault.
the fact remains that I am tired of having to boot back into my Windows install to do some pretty basic stuff. [...] There is one application that cannot be run at all because of its dependency on Internet Explorer - Outlook 2003.
Well if you're sooo dependent on Microsoft products, and you admit it, then you should now understand WHY OSS is so important. We're seeking to empower the individuals, who in today's setup are at the mercy of software companies. And your experience of Linux has only highlighted even more this need to have an open alternative to Windows and its flagship "products".
If you want to exclusively use Linux, then the first thing you need to learn to do is to COMPROMISE. Understand that you'll be better off not using MSN messenger or Outlook, and start looking at the alternatives. We're not here to emulate windows, we're here to offer a different desktop experience.
As for the lack of new interesting things in the OSS world, well I'll just say that you haven't been looking hard enough. Not all the interesting stuff comes in a.deb or.rpm...
Actually, I believe "Extremadura" means "Extremely Hard" in Spanish, so it should be a better fit for a well-equiped Spanish pornstar than for a major distro.
It's funny how the word "adventure" was used to define the LucasArts-style adventure puzzle games (DOTT, King's Quest) as well as the RPG-type Elder Scrolls IV.
The truth is that the former genre is pretty much dead (to my disappointment), since apparently the standards were set so high in the past that any game that comes along and that doesn't offer 200 hours of laughter and entertainment is deemed a failure by the "critics" and the game performs poorly in sales.
As for the latter genre, well I don't think the genre is dying. As the success of Elder Scrolls shows, people are willing to pay big bucks for that kind of entertainment.
Actually, the current Lebanese government was (yes, was) pushing for an improvement of US-Lebanon relations. After Syria had been kicked out, Condoleezza Rice came to Lebanon a few times, as they saw in Lebanon a potential ally, a burgeoning democracy, one that would champion the Moderate Arab values around the Middle East.
So, in this context, it is true that the US has gone from loved to hated in the span of 17 days. Everything that has happened since the beginning of the war has strengthened the radical elements of the Lebanese government (like it or not, Hezbollah is part of the Lebanese gov't and represents 45% of the population). Every civilian killed was proof that everything that the radicals have been saying about the "Zionists" and the "Imperialist American Dogs" was true.
I'm not a lawyer, but since he had told the cops that they were being filmed, and they did not protest, doesn't their silence mean that they implicitly accept being filmed ?
There are situations where when you don't protest it implicitly means that you're fine with it (such as being filmed in a mall, I supppose).
Do you prefer spending 8 hours in front of your PC removing spyware/malware/viruses/all of the above or learning something useful such as installing/using Linux?
If I calculate the number of hours I have wasted cleaning up after my dad and sister's poor browsing habits, it would probably amount to something around 6 days.
I believe Linux is an amazing OS for those who care enough about their privacy and their PCs to spend that much time in front of a monitor... Unfortunately Joe Sixpack doesn't care as long as it sends his emails and lets him browse his pr0n. That is why Linux will never work for them, it just takes too much time, the same way having a "clean" Windows OS takes time.
I believe they should also ban US children from travelling to the French Riviera since they'll get to see many more corrupting (and real-live) tits over there.
Even though I will sound totally cliché, I believe it must be reminded that freedom is not only something we have to fight for to achieve, but something we have to fight for to keep.
There is an easy solution, and that is to put our trust into the various MegaCorp®'s to produce reliable, honest, and functional software. This model has proven not to deliver on most of these fronts.
The other solution will be to suck it up, run a free OS, and spend 8 hours learning how to run an "alien" OS instead of spending them cleaning spyware/malware/viruses.
It would be nice if we could have the best of both worlds, but unfortunately "better performance" rarely goes hand in hand with "less work".
No, I'm saying that it's easier to justify why Google and Firefox can get away with such things where Microsoft will be slapped on the hand and/or taken to court...
I notice that in my version of Firefox the search box defaults to Google, and that the pulldown menu of pre-entered options doesn't even include MSN Search, but Google seems to have been oddly quiet on that front for the many years prior to IE7 that Firefox has made this feature available.
This is true, but there is a slight difference... Firefox and Google are 2 different entitities, whereas IE and MSN search are both owned by Microsoft. IE has 90% of the browser market share, thus its decision to set MSN as the default search engine COULD be considered as illegal monopolistic competition.
Well I use Ubuntu on the desktop and think it's probably the best OS in terms of efficiency (what you can do with it) Vs. effort (how much time you must spend in front of a screen to get your sound card/printer running)... but it is very ressource hungry compared to other *nix distros, so I don't see HOW they would like to translate their success in the desktop market to the phone/PDA market, where ressources are still a luxury.

Well it's true but let's not forget that a lot of people are COERCED into registering for something when they actually want something else. This IMHO makes the whole "registered users" idea completely useless UNLESS the registration serves only one purpose, which is to play the mentionned MMO.

Any PC that comes pre-installed with a Linux distro should come with a label that says WARNING: YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO PUT IN SOME EFFORT... people expect their PCs to have the usability of their washing machines, i.e, you press this-then-this to send an email/write an essay/download pr0n...
Besides no tech support team would be allowed to tell you HOW to install XMMS/Azureus/DVD ripper, and these user will HAVE to *gasp* search for sites such as the unofficial Ubuntu Guide to get things done...
Elitist talk? Maybe... I just don't see the point in selling a PC pre-installed with a specific *nix distro when in the end it would require the EXACT same effort from the buyer to buy a virgin PC and install the distro of his choice (or the one recommended by his friend(s)).
Actually I CAN run Windows 95 on my 486 66Mhz, which has 16 MB RAM and a gig of space... but then again it's "overclocked" to 75 Mhz... and I can't run anything besides IE3, and word 95 (or whatever it's called)...
I COULD run the latest Oo and firefox if I had a *nix distro though... That's where the difference is. I can have a FUNCTIONAL PC using obsolete (legacy) hardware using *nix, with the latest software running...
Is the game truly 'unifinished' just because the player stop playing it before an assumed 'end'?Most games would have us believe yes, and reinforce that by giving us 'completion rates', but those aren't true gauges that we've exhausted a game's fun or emotional range so much as they are a measure of the amount of content we've plodded through.[...] Claiming a game is 'unifinished' is just silly. You may not finish the 'story', but you certainly finish the 'game'. When I turn off Tetris, the game is over...
Do0d!!!! Just admit that you couldn't beat the last colossus, you got pissed off, and never cared enough to try again. Alternatively, just admit that you s\/X0rZ. No need for go all "Schrödinger's Cat- dead and alive at the same time" crap...
You can see why Sony would want UT2007 to be available on launch day. With all the attention Call of Duty 2 (Xbox 360) is getting, they also want a high-profile FPS shooter to promote the machine's capability.
Looking at this list, Final Fantasy PS3, Metal Gear Solid 4, Tekken PS3, (and maybe maybe Devil May Cry 4) are the only heavyweights... I know there are sh*tloads of other games to come (Gran Turismo PS3... raaahhh), but IMHO they do need a little more than this.
because frivolous lawsuits are as American as apple pie, that's why. Five lines will save you years of headache, not all of us can afford to reply to emails the same way Anakata does...
all they're doing is forcing the actual file sharers further underground where they're harder to find, which leads to the next round of lawsuits hitting an even lower ratio of bad guys to innocent people
And who exactly would those "bad guys" be? Hmmm? You don't see them breaking the law and using mafia-style racketeering techniques to win cases...
Remember, this is a war of rights... civil disobedience is a way of showing your discontentment with a law. Some take it to extremes, some are just casual downloaders, but WE are not the bad guys.
P.S: I know that the guy who wrote the article didn't mean what I'm trying to infer from what he said, but these "slips of tongue" can be significant and "used against" the involved party, because it does mean that of all the people sued for downloading copyrighted materials, SOME were "bad guys", which IMHO isn't true...
What is the first thing a kid receiving a $100 laptop going to think? Yep, that's right:
HOW MUCH CAN I SELL THIS FOR?
The fact is that $100 for these kids is worth 200 days of work if you follow 50 cent/day wage they get for 12-14 hours of work (according to this but I've heard of even less...).
What to do? Use this "machine" for an undefined incomprehensible goal, I mean even the makers don't really know exactly how this laptop thingamagig will actually be beneficial in REAL terms (ignore the use of buzzwords such as explore, interact and create, they don't mean anything). OR, they could flog it in the closest market for the highest they can, giving them REAL benefits, such as cash, to buy that tin pot they'll use to boil water, or whatever it is they need.
The first thing they need to realize is the importance of education. The second thing will be for them to actually do something about it. The third and last component will be to give them the tools they need to achieve their educational goals.
Both my grandfathers were refugees from the Armenian Genocide and arrived in France/Syria with nothing at all with them, they were orphans 5/7 years old and couldn't read or write. One of them went to a French school, got the education he needed. The other one didn't have the same privilege, he taught himself everything. Guess which one actually was the more educated person at the end? Yep, the one who taught himself.
The point? Education is not only about the tools you have at your disposal, it's also the willingness and dedication to learn.

A monstrous green corporealized Id with torn-up cutoffs is fairly pointless without the fragile Ego from which it sprang.
Actually, another reason why the game would suck is because of (for those that didn't catch on yet) the "movie-to-game conversions must suck" convention of 1984 also known as the Ghostbusters rule. I don't think Hulk sucked because of the way the psychology of Bruce Banner was interpreted by the both the movie and video game directors.
