Everyone I know who has Xbox Live (myself included) purchase all of the A-list Live titles within a week or two of when they are released. Just to keep up with the Joneses. Looking through my collection, I purchased a total of 6 games pre-Live (the first 8 months after I got my Xbox), and 12 games once I got Live (about 6 months ago). Because those games are the ones I am interested in.
Some people wanto to sit at home and play Kirby's Air Ride for 9 months straight. I'd rather pick up a new game every few weeks, and go on-line with it.
I find the challenge of real people much better than even the best AI. I also like the challenge and excitement of new games- not the same thing over and over again.
The parent to my post was comparing people who died of obesity, to those who died in the World Trade Center disaster.
I don't think you can really compare those who killed themselves through self-hate and neglect, to those who were murdered.
I'm sorry if I think that people should take responsibility for their actions- and over-eating is something they should take responsibility for.
Going to work, and getting killed is not really their fault, and I do feel compassion for them, and their families.
The person who drives down the road drunk at 100mph is an idiot. The person whom they hit, and kill, is an innocent victim. I don't really care about the drunk idiot who caused it, but I do feel sorry for the other one.
Someone who dies from obesity is like that drunk idiot. Someone who was sitting at their desk when a plane hits the building is an innocent victim.
If you don't see the difference between those two, I would say that you are the grade 'A' asshole.
In the WTC bombing, a lot of people with great potential died. Young people, people with families, people who might have done good things for society. Probably some of them were coaches for kids basketball teams. Maybe one of them had a child whose birthday was that day, and they were going to come home early for a party.
Nobody really cares when 30,000 big, fat, lazy, disgusting people with no will power keel over while choking down their last Big Mac. Maybe they had reached the maximum size of stretch pants at Wal*Mart, and were going to go naked the next day because of it. You know, a lot of those obese people can't even wipe their own ass- really. So, either someone else does it for them, or they waddle around with shit between their cheeks.
So when innocent people die, people have compassion. When someone kills themselves through gluttony, nobody cares.
You've got to be kidding- whether or not you play games on a console determines if you have values? Is software all about personal values, and morals now?
This is starting to sound like vegetarians are taking over or something. Where what you eat/software you run, determines your worth as a human being.
It really doesn't matter that much in the big scheme of things.
Well, should we give them a license to kill every Iraqi they see?
It's not a conventional war- we just have a bunch of people sitting around waiting for something to happen. They are there to provide a presence- wear a uniform, and drive around (swerving around mines).
Its not like they are busy all day- I don't think they were playing with Xboxes during the initial phases of the war.
I don't think that this is 'exclusive'. If other entertainment companies want to donate, I'm sure the military will take it.
I used to be posted at a remote site, and I loved it when we would get this kind of stuff. We got movies on VHS about a week after they came out in the theater in the US. Twice a year we would get a huge box of sports equipment, everything you could imagine. That was cool.
On the Xbox, the greatest success I have had with my wife has been Top Spin (tennis).
Awesome game- AND the chicks get to dress the players up in nice clothes.
Seriously, I came home from a neighbors house tonight and found my wife playing a little more just to get her player trained up to the next level. Great game.
If you were getting paid by the hour- and you were spending time 'adding elegance' to the solution when the problem was already fixed...
You just jacked up the price that your employer would need to charge. While in India, they moved on and finished 2 or 3 other projects.
(This assumes that you are programming professionally, and this may not expressly apply to your situation, but it is a good example of how to be competitive, or in this case, not competitive)
Well I'm sorry, but I don't see where I was comparing Amtrak to automobiles at all.
I was trying to refute the poster who said that Amtrak "makes" millions of dollars per year. I was taking that to mean that he thought Amtrak profited millions of dollars. Amtrak as a distinct entity loses tons of money each year. I was only attempting to address that single issue.
Now, if you want to turn this into a discussion about how the government actually subsidizes automobiles (and air travel too) then that is a different thing.
Are you now thinking that government subsidies have something to do with Nintendo?
Actually, on Pepsi, you just hit the tip of the iceburg.
The link you gave goes to the Pepsi-Cola list of products. Pepsi-Cola is owned by Pepsico. Pepsico also owns Frito-Lay, Quaker (oats and stuff), Tropicana, and Gatorade. Here is a good link to all of their brands: http://www.pepsico.com/company/brands.shtml. Stock ticker symbol is 'pep'. The main Coke stock ticker symbol, if anyone wants to compare, is 'ko'. Yes, Coke is diversified too, and is a larger company, based on market cap.
So Pepsi(co) is really in the same boat as Microsoft and Sony. It's a huge company, where soft-drinks are only part of the picture- albeit a large part.
Nintendo on the other hand has, according to the original article, claimed that they only make video games. But, then again, the article did state that they have a new advertising campaign.
Amtrak receives billions of dollars (okay, actually 1.2 billion approximately) per year from the federal government. It is a subsidized service, because it cannot make it on its own. They had they highest number of riders ever, in 2003- but still, nobody cares.
Soon, (or recently) Amtrak is/was supposed to get off the federal tit. They said they would need to go bankrupt.
Amtrak should not be mentioned along with the other companies as a group comparison.

Yes- and working well in my opinion.
I work for a very large government agency (100,000+ employees). With a LOT of websites. We are research oriented, and each and every little group puts up information in their field on the web.
In the past, it was just a thrill if people could put something up on the web- everyone rejoiced. Most of them were done by someone in the office who was willing to try to create a website, some coded by hand, others used Front Page, Dreamweaver, etc. Some were done by the son/daughter of the employees. But, every single site looked very different, most of them very, very bad.
I was actually hired to unify the look/feel/use of about 300 sites in one division, which is actually a very small percentage of the sites we actually do have.
We've set guidelines, we've created templates, we've contacted some people directly when their site was completely screwed up.
After 3 years, things are finally starting to look good. We still have a few 'rogue' sites, but generally, everything is where it should be.
We of course had to offer the same basic guidelines that the Deptartment of Health and Human Services did- in fact, I wish they had theirs set up 3 years ago, I would have just stolen everything there!
If we had continued with the process of creating sites that didn't work together, we would be doing a disservice to our clients- and WASTING the taxpayers money as everyone of our 'webmasters' learned the rules themselves. So I think this is a good use of taxpayers money- yes, they NEED guidelines.
After reading the Gamespy article, it seemed like they really did like the game.
Pretty much they all agreed that the graphics were a problem, and the demo game the game a poor showing, because it only scratched the surface, and the graphics are a large part of that surface.
But, in the end, most of them said they really liked the game because of its depth.
1- ANOTHER collection of retro games available for modern hardware.
2- A digital carpet that looks like Space Invaders
3- Surround your Xbox in plastic
I wonder if this is a trend of people being bored with modern games. This Christmas is heating up as far as new game releases- but is it just a bunch of the same things, over and over again, and now we are in a situation of what was old, is new again?
Good post- while MechAssault didn't change my life at all, I did think it was a great game. And, I would be playing it a lot more if I wasn't dedicated to Top Spin right now.
Metal Arms is great- and is on all 3 platforms. I finally got past the stupid Zombiebot King, so now it is fun again.
Hopefully I'll be getting Deus Ex 2, and Links 2004 soon, otherwise I'll need to go buy them myself.
Actually, on your list, they all have an XBOX counterpart.
This is not a coincidence.
Sad to say, but I never really realized something about myself until you pointed it out...
I thought that my not watching TV was because I'm better than everyone else, just too intellectual for Paris Hilton.
Now that you point it out, it's because I sit around playing video games all the time.
Well, gotta get down from my high horse YET AGAIN! When will I get a permanent place up there?
Aliens- so true, so true.

Its like a bunch of computer geeks using their computers in their spare time reading discussion groups about computers.
We would NEVER do THAT!
Well, should we give them a license to kill every Iraqi they see?

That's because you're a Big Dork.
The one game you mention, you've 'played to death'. Yet you are not interested in much that Xbox has to offer. Try some other games- they're good.
I recommend Top Spin quite highly.
Only if you envied the guys who wore eye-liner, and attempted a feminine/androgynous lilting voice because the whole boy/girl thing made them cry.
And their parents just couldn't possibly understand who they REALLY were on the inside.
("why do people have to judge me because I wear make-up?!?")
Great game.
Some of the RTS games like 'Age of XXXXXX' and Rise of Nations would also be cool.
You can play against each other, and throw in a computer opponent or two to add some cannon fodder.
It's not crazy fast, and is essentially a 'puzzle' of the rock-paper-scissors type.
I recommended an Apple one time.
For the next 3 years, my neighbor/friend would ask me every month or so why they can't run all of the software that was on sale at the computer store.
I tried to tell them that well, the computer was easier to use, and all that.
They just wanted to run the copy of Freddy Fish that grandma bought for the kids.
Honestly, that was the last time I recommended a computer to someone like that.
Actually, I base my judgment on Amtrak not being profitable using GAAP, or, generally accepted accounting principals.
o lu mns/archives/1999/991214TU.htm
It isn't really rocket science. Amtrak makes far less money each year than they spend.
This is a little old, but here is a fairly good description of it:
http://www.dallasnews.com/business/scottburns/c
If you define 'profitable' in a different manner, please let me know. I may need to adjust what I've learned about accounting over the years...
Thanks

I just looked at DVD barn's stock. They have 61 total games- 60 for Xbox, and 1 for PS2. They do not have any games from 2003 at all.
My guess is that they are not going to pursue the business any further, so unless something changes, this may not be the best place.
