You know, I think it would be kinda nifty to set up five or six of these micro drives in RAID 5 configuration. I mean, talk about a solid mini-application server for household use.
That's what I'm worried about. If war breaks out between China and Taiwan, it could be nuclear. Also, if we have Navy forces in their waters, China may also launch a few "low yeild" tactical nukes at our carriers as a message to the US to stay out of it's affairs.
I don't wish war on anyone. But, I do agree that the US economy would grow more stable because of this. When you think about it, we import more that we export. So, a war in China would force the US to become more independant out of interests of national security. This in effect will open up more jobs and drop unemployment by a significant factor. But in the end, would it be worth it at the expense of millions of lives due to nuclear warfare in Asia? I think you know the answer to that. You couldn't be that cold blooded.
Let's not forget that the US is still involved in the Middle East. And, N. Korea still needs to be delt with. I don't think now is the right time for Taiwan to start officially claiming independance as it might end up needing US support in the name of freedom. When you think about it, I now understand what Bush ment when he said to Wen "Maintain the status quo".
In other words....Mr Chen, please...PLEASE shut your fucking pie hole for now. Our economy can't handle another war.
The TravelStar series from IBM store the password in EEPROM on the logic board. So if you lost the password, the drive is useless. I think you might be able salvage the data buy simply swaping logic boards though. But, if the servo data has a serial number encoded someplace on the platter to reflect what's in EEPROM, then your SOL. At that point, physically break the drive (for peace of mind) and throw away.
Arrr..matey! The curse of the red planet! Even if it had oceans, I wouldn't be solar-sailing me ship over them. But, rumor has it that there be alien precursor booty hidden away. What pearl of a find that would be..Arrr
I hate SPAN as much as the next fellow slashdotter. But having the goverment get it's hand into this sets a bad example. I really think the free market should be able to take care of this. Not the goverment.
Lawers?! Phuck the lawers!!
Seriously, once location is known to the public, every nation on Earth will be sifting through the data. And even if someone does develop a product based on alien data gathered, would such a person/company admit to the source of such innovation? Could you (would you) prove otherwise?
Once this cat is outta the bag, it's staying out. And everyone will have chance to grab it by it's tail.
I don't think Duke Nukem Forever is going to ever be released. In fact, I would go so far to say that it's nothing more then an internal R&D project to test the latest game engines for future games that WILL be released to the market. And yes, I'm bitter with sarcasm today
"but it does mean that the information can grow stale and inaccurate."
What is stale and inaccurate can also become a haven of data for historians that wish to analyze the past. A perfect example of this can be found at http://www.archive.org
We live in a society where money and power go hand in hand. For example, in the case of politions, if you hear about one wanting to pass a law that obviously does more harm than good then clearly you must look for a paper trail that might uncover the true motivation. And generally, that trail is often a monetary transaction record.
Note: This example aplies to all polititions regardless of party affiliation.
I think the problem we face is that it's not that we have "bad" information out there taking up "valuable space" simply because what is valuable and bad is totally subjected to the individual.
I think what we need to realize is that there is too much information past the point of comprehension. I wouldn't say this is a problem, but rather calls for a solution of better orginization. And in the case of the Internet, I see that it's currently being addressed with search engines such as Google.
You would get better I/O performance with a new Motherboard using the same CPU vs sticking with your older board. But as far as CPU performance goes, it won't change. And if it does, it could be 1% faster or -1% slower depending on the chipset.
But I do agree with changing out the motherboard when time to do a CPU upgrade. In fact, I'm using the integrated firewire (IEEE 1394) and USB 2.0 a lot on my new board alot more then I thought I would be. Though, my original reason to upgrade was for a faster CPU.
Next generation will be PCI Express built around Intels next set of chipsets. Even DDR2 memory for faster FSB access.
There is an "I-Pod" like MP3 player from a company called iRiver. It's the iHP-120. Personally, I own the iFP-390 but it lacks Ogg support....for now. If the hardware can handle it, there might be a firmware upgrade soon to support that file format. Check out the iHP-120 here

It is true that some of the older Dimensions (first starting around September of 98) were not compatible with industry standard ATX. So if you used anything but a Dell replacement motherboard or power supply, you will fry them both. However, a few years later Dell went back to ATX standards due to liability involving safty with fire.
Which brings be to this next tid-bit of info. If you own such a Dell (or any Dell product for that matter), it has a lifetime warranty if it's classified as a safty issue. For example, if it catches on fire, or smoke; Dell will replace it with a brand new unit of equal value. I've seen a Pentium 90 come back in return for a new P4 based Dimension due to smoking power supply. Word of advice. If you did fry your Dimension using the wrong part, don't let them know it or you just wont get that swap.
And, be honest. Don't try and fuck Dell over. They do check over each case to make sure nothing fraudulent is going on. So for those who are already thinking evil thoughts....you've been warned!
What your essay reflects was basically the life and culture of America before the 1920s. Nowdays, our government has become more involved with corporate activity that the "system" of free enterprise (Capitalism) is no longer as effective as it use to be. There is no denying the fact that some government involment is necessary to prevent expoitation of the people. But, it's involment is getting so bad it's now riddled with corruption.
So no matter how you slice it, bigger government = bad government. Socialism, Capitolism...it doesnt matter. Once the momentium of government getting bigger get's rolling. Oppression starts to rear it's ugly head.
Oh yes...millions..BILLIONS even!!! *gasp* My god, back off on the dope. I think your suffering from a THC overload.
She can play with my "joystick" anytime. Just make sure you use the right combinations. And yes...there is force feedback.

Fan is short for fanatic. So when you really think about it, is that something to be proud of?
They are also going to say that it was caused by Open Sourced software...and how they are a threat the national security.
If you can messure it's frequency in a before and after state, then you can determine whether or not it's been red/blue shifted.

No, honestly. I didn't mean to bill you for $10,000! I ment $10 you see. The problem is my keyboard................
This may be redundant (as it was modded), but it drives the point home quite well. Well said :)

Rumor has it that Apple can't make enough of the i-Pods to meet demand for this holliday. If anything, I suspect the price of these to go up.

Totally off topic, but I'll bite...
