I'll bash MS as much as anyone, but lets be real here.
Make the server a standalone server and restrict all comms via port & IP for the cameras and viewers. Use windows firewall, available on 2000 and up. Pop open an ip & port restricted port for rdp to manage it.
Now the view/replay/record software must have some type of authentication, right?
Give the boss user or guest (that ought to do it).
now just have to manually patch or open a few more ports for windows update or MS Basline insecurity analyzer or windows SUS.
Now I didn't really look at the cameras, but I think they're standard not network cameras so to run it under linux you'd have to reverse engineer the video to network converter's functionality/authentication/yadda/yadda/yadda.
Aren't these the idiots that allowed MTBE (methyl t- butyl ether) to be used as an oxygenate. It was implemented at a huge cost that was.... drum roll please.... passed on the the consumers. This heralded in gas prices higher than anywhere in the country.
Oh and now we find that the low molecular weight ether is water soluble (known all along) and is..... drum roll please...... polluting water supplies and now it is no longer being used.
Why didn't these fools mandate that ethanol be used? Oh because it is biomass produced and a renewable resource. Well, we can't have people thinking they can grow gas for their cars when the asshats in charge are in the pocket of the petroleum industry.
I say tar & feather these fools and ride them outta town on a rail.
I remember using Intel Internet Phone back in the mid 90's (95-97ish). I had a 28.8 modem (in California) and my brother (who was in Florida) had a 14.4 and (dialup) and it ran pretty good. Just had to use it more like a walkie talkie than a phone.
Now I honestly don't remember if they bought it or develpoed it, but they had that almost a decade before skype.
I went to vonage. features are nice (best for me is simulring that and plug it in anywhere and "your phone number" works.). just have to do some packet prioritization on a symmetrical connection and there are very few problems.
The best is that I can cut the land line and not have to give SBC a red cent. But, I'd go back to SBC before I'd go to MS. Actually I'd rather setup my own can and string phone network before I'd give money to either.
Your assumption is that only 1 person has won the lottery in the 20 years it has been in use.
There are big payout winners every few months here in calif alone. Therefore some simple guesswork say (4 winners a year) x (20 years) x (# of states with lotteries) > 3000
Failed foreign policy has been the cause of terrorism. Why not address the root of the problem. The root of the problem isn't "they hate us because of our freedoms". That is utter bullshit that only a fool believes.
The founders of this country fought and died for the freedoms we formerly took for granted (formerly because many of them do not exsist anymore). If you want to live in a police state or a fascist state I suggest Saudi Arabia as that would probably be more to your liking.

authoritarian voice over loud speaker: 671476! on march 3, 2006 your vehicle was observed crossing the San Francisco Bay Bridge. There were 2 people in the vehicle. Who was the other person and where were you going?
subject: WTF? Whois 671476? My name is rodgster. I have no idea what the F@$& you're talking about. That was 5 years ago.
authoritarian voice over loud speaker: 671476, don't play games with us. Our records go back even further.
subject: come on! I don't remember what I had for lunch last week.
authoritarian voice over loud speaker: 671476, maybe you'd like to see the in-car surveillance? Would that refresh your memory?
-video clip plays-
subject: hey that's me and my girlfriend (in my bedroom)! That's it! I know my rights! I demand to be told what I am being held for! I demand to see my lawyer right now!
authoritarian voice over loud speaker: sit down! 671476, you have no rights anymore. Now, if you continue to be uncooperative we have some openings down in Gitmo.
I would be interested to see an impact study of this in a couple of years.
I'll guess it'll show to be effective against common crimes, but little else.
I'm opposed to police state measures. I'm not afraid and I see little reason for anyone to be afraid. You have a much better chance of winning the lottery than being killed by terrorism.
The fascists are playing on people's unjustified fears.
RMS > You could not run free applications on such a system (sic, trusted computing). If you did figure out how, and told someone, that could be a crime.
In other words. You Must Pay the Microsoft Tax.
Wow, RMS was rather lucid in this interview. I'm impressed.
If I remember correctly (almost positive) the tape drive was built into the case (by the keyboard). Which after reading the article looks like it was the first generation of PET. I also remember machines with the chicklet keys. And apparently I was wrong on the memory (looks like 8K, again after reading the article).
Offtopic but around that time I had an atari 1200XL at home (maybe it had 64K of memory before OS load) and used it in college for writing papers.
I remember the comodore PET I used back in high school. No HD. No Floppy. No color screen. 64KB of memory (?). Basic. Tape drive (you could use the same tapes that would play in your care stereo). Wow!
I think this CEO should be subjected to rendition and interrogated as to his contacts with & material support of suspected terrorists. That's what would probably happen to practically anyone else and that's why the (Un-) Patriot (ic) ACT is a BAD idea and unconstitutional.
I think if a company's system is breach and fraud or ID theft is perpetrated the time, expense, cost of new SS#, accounts, lawyers, etc. should be borne entirely by the entity responsible for the data's security. Putative damages if warranted, should also be assessed to punish irresponsibility.
If the perps are ever identified and apprehended they should be severely punished civil & criminal.
It is to indicate the these companies are only interested in $$$$$$$.
I always filled out my checks to Bell$outh & $BC. And I was amused my this "personal joke" that the banks did't have a problem cashing them. Sorry if you didn't/don't get it. Currently I don't give any of these asshats even $0.01, but many of the companies I work for still do, despite my suggestions to get services elsewhere.
Now wait a minute.
I'll bash MS as much as anyone, but lets be real here.

MS: These new WMF bugs are considered non-critical and a patch will be released during the normal patch release schedule (aka Feb 14).
In other news, Ullrich's quote in TFA was hilarious.
Is the change to x86 a stealthy move which will in the future enable people to buy Mac OS X to run on their formerly MS Windows PC?
If this is the true objective, I'd say it is brillant!
A quote from TFA fits quite well here:
"School officials and Canton City Prosecutor Frank Forchione didn't think it was funny."
Fark!
I just commited 7 felonies waiting for this story to appear.
I run x86 Fedora.

Yes. I actually play one on purpose to see what it sounded like on my car stereo. And you're right about the sounds it made.

I don't care if they repent or not. I haven't bought anything (intentionally) from Sony for years now and I intend to stay the path.
