Quite easy to do, I used to do so when I had a Windows parition, run Thunderbird with the profile manager:

Start > Run: thunderbird -ProfileManager (under Windows)
    $ thunderbird -ProfileManager (under Linux)

Create a new profile, select a directory for the profile on a FAT partition, then create email accounts, and import email (if any).

Now on the other OS, run Thunderbird with the profile manager again, create a new profile, select the same directory, you are set.

To upgrade from XFree86 to X.org:

    # emerge -C xfree

XFree86 blocks X.org, not sure if x.org is still masked or not.

So there is no need to reinstall Gentoo.

And XFree86 is the default in 2004.1, don't know about 2004.2.

Check out the downloads section at php.net for Windows binaries and *nix source, and here you can find more details on PHP under Mac OS X.

As for the compiler in the story, I haven't tried it before so I don't know.

If you want to use Linux as a desktop OS, I suggest you check out Gentoo, the installation process is a bit difficult, but it's very well documented, and then you'll get an OS customized for your needs.

Portage is very easy to use, it handles deps automatically, and makes downloading new software a breeze. :-)

    RTFA

A loss of 1 percent of the market may not mean much to Microsoft, but it translates into a large growth, proportionately, in the number of users running Mozilla and Netscape-based browsers. Mozilla and Netscape's combined market share has increased by 26 percent, rising from 3.21 percent of the market in June to 4.05 percent in July

So Mozilla market share increased by 26%, and it's the first month after those articles about how Firefox is better than IE hit the mainstream journalism.

Both the whitelist and the install button delay solve this.

If it's a malicious extension, the installation dialog won't show up any way. And the install button delay will give the user enough time to stop clicking or typing.

The whitelist is in Mozilla 1.7, and the install button delay is in Firefox 0.9.1.

  18. Re:At least on Building a Better Mozilla With Plugins · · Score: 3, Informative

Mozilla already has a large developer community, almost all of the extensions at Mozilla Update are developed by the community.

An extension developer can submit their extension to Mozilla Update and directly link to the XPI from their homepage.

Or they can provide a downloadable XPI file, the user has to open it (from File > Open), and it'll be installed.

So there is no automatic installation, and the avarage user can't be tricked to click yes for an installation dialog.
