Mac users can't grasp things as simple as right click
x86 users can't seem to grasp that all one has to do in order to execute a right click on a Mac is hold down the Control key while clicking. If that's too much of a pain in the ass, plug in any regular mouse.
and totally wig out when they have to open a command prompt to do something like ipconfig.
You are aware there is this little thing called OS X, which is based on NEXTSTEP, which is UNIX-based, right? You are aware that at most Linux/UNIX conferences 60% of users have Macs, right? I didn't think so. Idiot.
Just like cameras are okay in schools. Ask the parents,
"Would you mind if this camera watches you all day while you work?"
Many would say no. Some would say yes.
How about, "Would you mind if this camera watches what you do while you drive, to help deter accidents?"
Some would say no. Many would say yes.
How about, "Can we put this camera in your house to ensure you're not doing anything illegal?"
Some already have this in a home security system. Imagine if it's online. Thanks to the PATRIOT act, it can already be monitored by law enforcement.
That's where the Dept. of Homeland Security wants to take you in three generations, only in every home. They'll deny it now, but if you wait, you'll see. That's where we are headed.
Plenty of people like the PocketPC because it has an interface superior to the Palm, and the OS is less buggy. I'm a long time Apple user and I think PocketPC is one of two things M$ has ever done right. My last PDA was a PocketPC, my current is a Treo, but my next will be a PocketPC again. Palm sucks.
To truly compete against Windows, GNU/Linux needs to have a line of hardware, clearly marked, that it will work flawlessly with. Big distros like Suse and Mandrake need to focus on courting hardware companies to prominantly mark their products with Tux. Period.
Not just desktop computers, either. You need to have everything from laptops to USB thumb drives to MP3 players to digital cameras and camcorders. Your computer IS your digital hub.
Linux users need to get in the habit of acting like Mac users. They don't have the hardware support, so they need to make it blatantly obvious what hardware does work with their platform.
The other big thing Linux needs to survive (other than Quicken and TurboTax) is Office VBA compatibility. In the Enterprise, this is essential. There are plenty of BASICs out there, why hasn't OO.org incorporated one of them?
In the Detroit area, one of the suburban area codes (248-xxx-xxxx) is 248.
At Ford headquarters, one of the local city exchanges is 248. (xxx-248-xxxx).
Whenever anyone from downtown Detroit tries to call someone from the suburbs with a 248 area code, and doesn't dial a "1" to indicate a long distance call, they get some unhappy engineer at Ford.
It usually goes something like this:
*ring* Ford employee notices local number on Caller ID they don't recognize...
"Ford Motor Co. this is xxxx"
*In very strong urban accent* "Is Tiniqua there?"
"Excuse me? This is For-"
"If you don't put Tiniqua on the phone, some shit is goin' down. Who the f*** are you, cracka?"
"This isn't who you tried to dial. This is For-"
"WHAT? You sayin' I stu-pid too? I can't dial no phone? I don't think so. That's it! I'm comin' down there to find out where tha hell she is!"
I make my livelihood on OS X. I used to do it on Windows. I've done everything from making PowerPoint Presentations in Office to using Quicken or TurboTax and tranferring the files, seamlessly, between a Windows box and an OS X box, to programming for Windows on my Mac using Codewarrior, REALbasic, or even Microsoft's own Visual Basic in VBA via Excel.
If you think you can't do something on the Mac, I'm sure you're mistaken. There are very very few things that cannot be done on the Mac.
why shouldn't we help to gov't out a little, and make their information gathering a little easier?
Because Americans would rather give their lives than run the risk of having what happened in England at the peak of its Empire, or what happened in Nazi Germany in its time, or in Communist Russia in its, happen here.
You obviously have no grasp of what it is to be American. I really wish you would leave. The day the majority here thinks as you do, I'll be taking myself and my family somewhere safe to live, where the leaders are democratically elected and people are free to read whatever book they wish from the library without fear of being interrogated, beaten, or imprisoned for it.
but... in the future it will be useful, cell phones in the future may have the ability to stream video to a nifty little screen, or audio files, or who knows what
This is Insightful? My phone could do video and audio over the web in 2002, at three times the speed of dial-up. I live in Michigan, one of the USA, and everyone knows the USA are far behind everyone else when it comes to cellular phone technology. I'm sure people in Japan could do streaming video in 1999. Where do you live where you can't get a phone that gets streaming media over the web? Antarctica?
Thank you for speaking out. I was looking around the comments, like the members of the council in Reloaded asking "is there not one among you"?
It doesn't make sense. This is the Star Wars movie of the new generations. Then again, I remember from being really young that ROTJ got a bunch of shit for it's "singing muppets" and whatnot, too. I think that once people have seen one really great sci-fi they just can't stand to see the sequels. I mean, face it. It was 1999. Think back to that time. The tech boom. Did you really go to see this movie with the Bill and Ted's Adventure guy with any expectations at all? Of course not. That's what made the first one so good. You weren't expecting it to be the Star Wars of a new generation, so when you saw it, you walked out with mouth agape. Then the next two come out, and you have all these preconceived notions in your mind as to what it should look like. It's nothing like what you wanted it to be, of course, because you're not the the damned writer.
I am appalled at the lack of appreciation on Slashdot for what I think is the greatest set of Science Fiction and Philosophy movies of all time.
I don't know. Maybe it was just a movie for "goths" and that's why the rest of you "didn't get it". Maybe you should all get out more or something.
Sorry, I don't mean to be flamebait here. If you were all, as a community, saying Windows ME was the best OS on the planet I'd be just as ticked off at you all, and just as perplexed.
Laws preventing theater taping are thus defensible in terms of protecting the consumer, as well as protecting the livelihoods of people who work in the movie, theater, or video rental industries, not to mention preventing legitimate theater goers from being annoyed by jerks with videocameras.
Releasing the DVD at the same time the movie is released would bring a huge slowdown to this problem.
I can't help but get the impression you're trying to justify piracy. It doesn't matter if someone just might get the DVD when it comes out because they're a fan. And it's not the studios' fault simply because they don't release a DVD at the same time, or at the time you think they should.
Well, fortunately there are concepts here in the USA such as a "free market" and "civil disobedience". The MPAA isn't providing a service they should, so people are going around their backs and doing it for them. Now, since you obviously don't grasp the Constitution, get out of my country.
The pirated VCDs come out a couple days after the movie opens in the US. The legit ones months after. Guess which ones people rent?
My argument is that DVDs and movies should be released simultaneously. This would dry up the black market. People that want to see movies in the privacy of their home, and those that want to see it in a theatre are two totally different kinds of people. My parents are in their late 50's/early 60's, and they hate the theatre. They get a headache every time they go, so they stopped going. By releasing the DVD at the same time they release the movie, there is more market hype over the film. Imagine seeing your now "favorite-movie-ever" and then walking out to the thetre lobby to purchase it. Legally.
I never said that anyone had a right to record a movie when they view it in a theatre.
Some people love movies, but hate people. They hate theatres. They're too loud, the food is too expensive, the crowds are horrid, etc.
These people want to see their favorite movies when they hit the market. People are generally good, so they tend to want to purchase an illegal copy of the film to watch (or download it off the Net) until the real thing comes out several months later.
By releasing movies and DVDs at the same time, the industry would save itself a lot of trouble. Most of the black market would dry up, and it would have no moral defense anymore.
Some people love theatres. Some don't.
The sooner the MPAA figures this out, the better off, economically, it will be.
I buy from iTMS (that's iTunes Music Store, for the uninitiated), and I have a 2nd gen iPod. It's a 10 GB. I'm going to buy a 40 GB as soon as I can afford it. There are plenty of people that don't have 40 GB iPods that want one. Those that don't, well, there's always eBay. Then they can get 500 more songs. *lol*
Oh, and Apple's also giving away a $2500 (or more) laptop. Even if you have an iPod, you can't beat that prize easily.
Stealing something because you don't agree with the law is no defense. No-one is accusing this thief of being a witch, or declaring the world is round, or being black. He was caught with a camcorder, filming a movie.
Who the hell wants some crappy camcorder-made copy of a movie, anyways? I'll bet you only fans of the movie. People that buy that crap are only doing so to have a copy until the DVD is released. If they released DVDs and movies at the same time, there wouldn't be this problem. Or, at least we'd know his customers meant to infringe upon the copyright holders.
Also, once again, copyright infringement is NOT stealing. Nobody is deprived of property. That doesn't mean it's not a bad thing, but your comparing it to rape is incredibly extreme.
It's cute for little networks that consist of an apple, a printer and an ipod, but it doesn't scale well
It scales great. I tried the iChat beta when it first came out, and it has Rendevous. I was at Eastern Michigan University, in my girlfriend's dorm. The public beta just came out an hour before, and a girl from across campus popped on my iChat Rendevous window.
My g/f hopped on her iMac. We tried to organize a threesome, but the girl from across campus wasn't up for it. Ah well, at least we all had a good conversation about Apple and their cool technology.
Please. They endorsed Bill Clinton in '92 and, just earlier this year, "Red" Ken Livingstone for mayor of London.
Clinton is considered by most to be centrist. He is not a far left liberal. Could you really equate anything he has done with Socialism?
Additionally, the editors have been outspoken in support of gay marriage and contraceptive education in third-world countries, to name a couple of traditionally "liberal" issues.
Since when is not interfering with another's constitutional rights a "Liberal" issue? Are you nuts? If you ask me, (or Thomas Jefferson, for that matter) staying the f*** out of everyone else's business is a most certainly "Conservative" issue.
And though they endorsed Bush in 2000,
See? Many "Liberals" have, and always have, thought Bush to be evil incarnate. No liberal media could ever endorse Bush.
Finally, do you really think a magazine with a right-wing stick up its ass would produce a cover like this?
Figuring that the "Vice-President", if you can call him that, said something to the effect of "f*** off" or "f*** you" on the Senate floor the other day, yeah, I do think an American right-wing magazine would be that bold.

I'm sorry, race has nothing to do with how people act in the inner city. People with the "urban" mindset are black, white, hispanic, asian, etc.
Maybe it is you that should be shipped to Africa?
Chainmail? They send you armor through your mobile?

Hey, didn't mean to blast you in my comment, but you didn't say any of the above in your original post. ^_~

At GM, they have banned camera phones. They must be left at the security desk. (Hence why Pa1m0ne just released a cameraless Treo 600.)
At Ford, all new workstations will have no floppy drive. All Ford employees with a PC will be issued a USB thumb drive.
I don't think they have a choice in the matter anymore. The market made the choice for them.

Then there is today's strip in Real Life Comics!
What year is it?!
Hey, no harm, no foul.
I'm just sick of the amazingly conservative American media being classified as "the Liberal media" by everyone.
Didn't mean to jump to conclusions. Sorry...
