I used to run SETI@home because I thought it was more 'adventurous' than other distributed computing systems. But then, one day I thought, what are the chances that we will find extraterrestrial life vs. the chances that I will get cancer? I now run folding@home.
For instant messaging, I'd go with gaim. Its ability to let you talk to people while leaving an away message up is a lifesaver for avoiding ex-girlfriends.
I'm suprised no one has mentioned the native X11 support in 10.3. That's what's going to make me switch from a win/linux dual boot dell to an ibook or powerbook.
Three things are needed to kill someone, 1) A weapon, 2) The skill, 3) The will to kill. It's been noted that games claim to provide two out of the three.
1) The cardboard box isn't a good weapon, neither is the CD.
2) Sure, I'm deadly with the rail gun in quake 3, but that doesn't mean I can fire a sniper rifle. Hell, I wouldn't even know how to load one.
3) If anything, a violent videogame would divert a killer kid's energy away from real people. And it's certainly doesn't provide a 'will to kill' to a normal kid.
I agree and don't. I think the era of paying for recorded versions of songs may be coming to an end, but artists will still make money on live performances.
I'm not so sure about that. For me, almost all the 'goodness' and 'funniness' of HHGTTG in is Adam's writing style and narration. I imagine watching the events on screen would be rather flat. HHGTTG is very well tailored to the book medium.
Senior Jennifer Puckett, president of the Inter-Residence Hall Association, called Icarus "a good thing" as it enforces rules that were already in place.
Slashdot poster Colin Palmer was surprised to hear himself say aloud the words "What a Tool" as he read this in the wired article.
When students first register on the network, they are required to read about peer-to-peer networks and certify that they will not share copyright files.
Yup. That's the only thing P2P is good for: downloading copyrighted files. Certainly no one like me would use it to share GPLed software.
Somehow I'm sure Icarus cares not about that distinction.
"When we turned the program on, our bandwidth usage dropped by 85 percent," said Norbert Dunkel, director of housing and residence education for the university.
Good job. You wouldn't want anyone to use all that bandwidth now would you. Better just have people checking their email, after all, if you are using more than average, you must be up to something bad.
BANG!
AHHHHHHHHHH!
Exploding cell phone it is then.

There will be no recall or devaluation of any U.S. currency. Old or new, all U.S. currency always will be honored at full face value.
So, tell me, if I'm a counterfitter, why wouldn't I just copy the older bills and 'age' them in the washing machine?
All viable space science! Funded by SCO
Yeah, like SCO funds anything. They just wait for someone else to do it and then say 'that's ours!'
I'd even accept it in Canadian dollars (in fact, that would be easier, given that I am Canadian).
That's going to a problem in the US courts.

No word on what OS the Dell laptops would run.
I'll give you a hint. It starts with a 'W' and ends with an indows.

Perhaps that's a good thing. This way we get more people founding new and interesting companies because they can get a job at a company. : )

some indistinguishable as actual channels.
With advertising indistinguishable from the content.
Sounds just as bad as windows XP
RMS is gnu/influential :)
Yeah, no kidding. What about all the people in China, India, and Africa? You know, most of the planet?
Dr Heimlich!
I hate Microsoft as much as the next slashdotter, but I think blaming hurricanes on them is going a bit far.
Why waste our time like this?
I think it has something to do with the banner ads at the top this page.

What now? Will GM prohibit unauthorized repairs of its patented car components?
:\
Won't be long. Remember Gammas: Less stitches means more riches.

Give spammers THE BOOT!
Such is the way everywhere.
90% of the traffic was P2P? What about Quake pings (when I was in college that's what I was concerned with)
Read the article, they won't let you play quake either.
