  1. Re:Ask about them... on What Questions Should a Prospective Employee Ask? · · Score: 1
    I always ask:

    - What is the best part about working here?

    - How is this job different from other jobs you've had in the past?

    - What's your background / how did you get here?

You get a good sense of the type of people you'd be working with and what they really like about the job.

There was this sort of thing in an episode of Max Headroom, where you could leave a few videos of yourself for your loved ones to interact. Of course, the implementation was backed by a corrupt industrialist, who had coin slots on the interaction kiosks, soaking people for their cash.

Hopefully in our world Edison Carter will be there to right the wrongs this new technology will cause.

I went to MIT. I hate it when people assume that you have to be rich to go there, or make comments like "my parents couldn't afford that." That isn't a reason to not even try. I'm not sure about the original poster's financial status (upper middle class can be a big range), but MIT recently announced it will be tuition free for those families making $75000 or less.

And the name does make a difference. I got my first job due to it (poor match in the end, but that is another story). Many employers see it as a short cut to the type of person you are. You *will* get a good job if you went to another school, especially if you are good (goodness will always override name in the end), but as other posters have mentioned the fact that you are surrounded by smart and clever people kicks your own performance up a notch. Being able to see exactly what you are capable of and find and notice your limits is an amazing experience. I wouldn't trade my time at MIT for the world, despite 4 years of complaining about the workload, the pressure and the frosh.

As some one who works at home for more than half the week, one must set boundaries.

I put a reasonable amount of time (at least 40 hours) no matter what and add to it if required per project. When I am done for work with the day, I am done. I leave my smart phone and work computer in my office and ignore them, having a pleasant, work-free evening or weekend.

If I was on-call, it would be a different story, but luckily, I don't have that to deal with now. chiefthe

  8. To Add to this Mess on Are TV Pharmaceutical Ads Damaging? · · Score: 1

Drug companies pay firms to publish their results in journals. My mom works for for one of these firms. They'll get some information from a drug company, write it up in a paper, then find some doctor to sign his name to the paper. (Occationally the doctor will write the paper (again, based on the drug companies info).) It is then published in a peer reviewed journal. Evidently they are having trouble finding doctors who are willing to sign their name to these things.

From what my mom says, the information won't get out otherwise--the drug companies will just hold on to it if they can't control what the output looks like. It all seems like a pretty sleezy business.

    Try using Google Print.

They are using a similar method to Amazon's 'search inside this book'...only a few relevent pages are displyed.

This is similar to displaying an abstract or references from a journal paper for free, which many pay services that archive journals already do.

My dorm made N2 ice cream all the time during rvsh.

One time the kid who was handling the N2 dumped some on the floor to impress the frosh. I got a few droplets in my socks, where it proceeded to burn my skin.

I've never removed a pair of sock so fast.

The dots it left were kind of neat, though, and actually included the texture of the fabric.

Another cool thing we did was put marshmellows in N2. Since there is so much sugar in the marshmellows, they don't get that cold, and you can pop them right in your mouth. They have the texture of a Lucky Charms marshmellow, but are cold, and a lot more fun to eat.
