Smaller states will always appear to be crucial to the outcome when they are not. The correct way to have viewed this problem would be to determine the changed outcome based on % of total vote in a state which must be changed and how that would modifiy the electoral outcome. Saying one needs to change 15K votes in say, Deleware where it amounts to >5% swing is to claim a very unlikely outcome. Far more likely is the swing of 1/2 or 1% of votes, even if that amounts to more votes in nominal vote terms.

After the failure last year of a magnet assembly provided by Fermilab the powers that be at CERN decided to forgoe a lot of the very low power testing that should have been done, instead chosing to meet an artificial schedule. Bad move and if they have any brains they would now revert back to the original plans once they restart.

The odds were that if Fermilab had in fact produced the Higgs the data analysis would show this before CERN could file their own discovery so there really is nothing to race against- either Fermi has the data or they dont.

Are we to believe that there is no mechanism to change the paygrade of an employee from say, one hourly wage to another? Or from hourly to salaried? From one grade to another?

This is a crock and is being used as an excuse to prevent the pay cut. Ahrnold should can the person in charge yesterday.

LaTex can be arcane. I am no longer a frequent user of LaTex (not in a job which requires that level of output) but I did use it last fall to make a CMYK door hanger for a political campaign by hacking a poster document class. The output to the printer was so good I got an email back saying it was the best they had received for such work. And that is the advantage of Tex, warts and all.

So before trying to write your own from scratch, check around and you might find one that is close enough that you can just make a few minor changes and get what you need.

I'll second the Landau Mechanics book which is very concise and goes right into lagrangian formalism which takes other books hundreds of pages. CAUTION: there are a *lot* of crappy copies of this book. Try your best to get one of the original hard covers, I think it was first printed around 1961.

I would strongly suggest getting the basics under your belt first - mechanics and E&M before going onto quantum mechanics. As far QM, I think Morrisons Understanding Quantum Phyics A User Guide is by far the best intro/mid-level QM book and will get you through many of the trickier points. In E&M I've heard a few good things about Franklins Classical Electromagnetism but haven't used it myself. Once you are all past that you may need some nuclear under your belt - the two tomes by Feshbach and Shalit are classics and still relevant though Wong is probably the way to go for a quick spin.

Assuming they hold true to this: "will allow school board officials to "approve supplemental classroom materials specifically for the critique of scientific theories" such as evolution and global warming." then I see this as a good thing.

Why? How long do you think it will take for most kids to see the folly in the 'intelligent design' theories when compared to the widely accepted evolution theory? By putting them side by side this will only serve to hasten, not slow, the demise of alternative theories of evolution.

As to global warming, having grown up during 'the ice age is coming!' era, perhaps a dose of critique of the global warming industry is in order to seperate the hype and highly speculative claims from fact and reasonable interpretation. Unlike evolution which has had a solid body of evidence for 150 years, global theories of climate have been all over the map during just the past 40 years - seemingly seeking the most extreme interpretation of the data at hand at that time.

But I really do think people protest too much - kids are not as stupid as you think.

Outside of a business server environment, what half-knowing user leaves on all the services shipped enabled?
