    Who needs Photoshop Express when we have Paint.net? http://www.getpaint.net/ It's open source and a very good alternative to Photoshop. It even has a plugin that lets you code new filters and effects in C# within Paint.net.

    I'm not a quantum physicist. However, this article makes me wish I were. What strikes me about the situation is that the experts seem to be a bit dumbfounded by all of this. Some seem to be struggling with deep philosophical concepts due to the strange findings. What this tells me is these men are at the edge of our paradigm of thought. They are the people who have a chance to pioneer new ways of thinking beyond our 'logical' paradigm. It seems our current and most common paradigm of thinking applies to a certain level of phenomenon. These physicists are observing phenomenon beyond that level. An evolution of thought must take place.

    I'm from the left coast (U.S.), so maybe that's part of the difference.... but I not only dissagree with what this person is saying, but I detest this kind of thinking. Who gives a crap about the fomality or attention to spelling. You know what? A lot of the time people make a concious choice to use poor spelling or informal language or to simply not care. The reason is, they want to not worry about that particular thing. They've got billions of other things to worry about, especially when you're dealing with technical information. If you get the gist of it, what else matters? It seems like a prevelant east coast (U.S. again) mentality that talking or writing the right way makes you somehow better. Bullcrock! Sometimes it's quicker to just say crap the way it needs to be said.

    Take this for what it's worth. I bought a used Treo 600 for $400 a while back. The speaker on it went dead which I learned is a common issue from reading around the web. I called palmone and they will do absolutely NOTHING for me unless I pay them $179 to fix it. That's a hugely inflated price for a speaker.

    Granted, had I bought the phone from a retail outlet they'd have repaired it for free.

    using the kernel now? :)

    Joking aside, this is cool. Runtime compiling makes conceptual sense in an open source operating system running mainly open source software... though it will surely add to load times. It adds to the openess of open source by keeping the source editable straight up untill run-time and, so, encourages keeping source code and editing source code... being that it is immedietly executable, given it was coded correctly of course ;)

    I think that people, even ignorant adolecent teens, would not be so willing to mess with biotech in this manner. By the time this technology is so commonly available, I'm sure the majority of the population will already have some appreciation for the dangers and unpredictability of what can happen. The way this article reads, biological hacking could easily cause the extinction of the human race... and how many people would be willing to let that happen.

    Then again, it could only take one screwball to cause a lot of damage.

    Something else to think about is targeted killing/infection. Bioengineered to target a specific race or set of people with certain traits. Sadly, as the human race has progressed very far technologically we have not progressed much in regards to prejudice.

  21. Re:Vocoder can be made subtle on Pitch Perfect Karaoke · · Score: 1

    Pitch correction takes the pitch of an original sound and tunes it to a correct pitch. It's often done manually by selecting a range of recorded sound in computer multi-tracking software and then applying a filter and telling it how much to offset from the original tune.

    vocoding is taking an orignal sound and filtering it with the nuances of vocal frequencies. In other words it manipulates the freqeuncies of a source sound by using a second sound.

    This is often done with synthesizers where the synth is the source sound and someone sings as the frequencing shaping sound and the end result is a synth sound that seems to be making natural vowel sounds. this is completely different from pitch correction.

    examples of vocoding: Intergalactic by the Beasty Boys
    Cowboy by Kid Rock
    exaple of pitch correction: Sher - Do you believe in life after love or whatever the hell that song is. She uses it more as a musical addative than a corrective utility.

    Haha, that is really good advice. My first C book didn't cover malloc and so I was stuck programming some pretty limited apps, if you could even call them that. For those who don't know, in order to make any suitably powerful application in C you need to be able to use malloc and it's associated functions and understand them well. It's the key to creating multiple instances and varieties of any data type dynamically at runtime. With it comes the responsibilty of the knowledge of memory management..... like the knowledge of good and evil for those who have had fun with memory leaks :).
