    No, but I've read enough of the winning works in the past to know that the award has lost its influence on my reading habits. For example, Scalzi's "Redshirts" was mildly amusing, but was in no way deserving of best novel. It was, at best, good fan fiction.

    Nope. Everyone one of those countries have market based economies and the businesses are neither government nor worker controlled.

    Even at the village level it fails. For example, the hippy communes that started up in the 60s rarely made it to the 70s. They all eventually died out. The few people who did the work got tired of trying to get the slackers off their lazy asses and either left or became slackers themselves. Eventually no one was left to do any work.

    I made a FB account because my family was all on it and kept nagging me to join in. I finally relented. But politics are driving me off. I don't even like Trump, but the constant "Trump is hitler" posts are fucking nonstop and I'm getting sick and tired of seeing that shit every time I log in. What ever happened to talking about family stuff?

    This evening I finally snapped and called my sister a "fucking idiot" after she posted yet another nazi reference.

    There have been occasions where I spent more time creating the ticket with it's description, acceptance criteria, and detailed steps than actually doing the work.

    That's me on the ops side. I suck at php. I know this. You do not want me working on the application. I'll fuck it up.

    On the other hand, I excel at scripting automation for servers. I live in bash and will almost always code a better automation script than the developers. I'll worry about getting the web server optimized, keeping it backed up, and simplifying the release process. Let the developers worry about optimizing their code. On occasion, we'll work together when the situation requires a look from both perspectives.

    DevOps is a middle managers wet dream to eliminate a bunch of jobs. Unfortunately, the job ads all tout DevOps. True sysadmin positions are becoming rarer each day.

    Yep. The Chinese government funded their solar businesses to drive out competition. Also, while they have environmental laws, they are generally ignored. Making solar cells is a very dirty business and keeping it from ruining the environment costs lots of money. So a double whammy to American solar businesses.

    Pandas are going extinct because they only eat bamboo. It's believed that in the distant past pandas ate a more varied diet, but something changed. As a result, they have been making a slow march towards extinction ever since.

  13. Since the Constitution specifically says "limited", they can't simply say copyright is forever. They'll keep extending it "a little more" each time their bosses, e.g. Disney, has stuff in jeopardy of going public domain.

    If it was up to me, I'd set copyright to life of the original author plus 20 years (and I feel I'm being far too generous). If a work is claimed by a corporation and they refuse to name a person, then the copyright is for 20 years, period. No extensions, no exceptions.

    A lot of people have swallowed the "container in the cloud" kool-aid by the gallons. Espousing it has the cure-all for all your computing needs. I'm far less enthusiastic about it. I can see it being very useful for many things, but is not the final answer. Unfortunately, I'm dealing with the zealots on a daily basis.

    About 15 years ago I was working a shit job with zero benefits - so no medical coverage. My shoulder was hurting a massive amount and the problem wasn't going away. I went to a local medical service to have it checked out but could not get them to give me any kind of estimate of the cost for just looking at my damn shoulder. You have to just accept whatever they decide to charge you after the fact.

    No other business that I know of can get away with this.

    Given Europe's history. No. That's how WW2 happened. WW1 finished and we went back to being isolationist. The next thing you know, Europe is back at it. We haven't left since then because we're afraid they'll start WW3. There are countries that have hated each other for hundreds of years and still haven't gotten over it. You can't prove who started it, but they're pretty sure it was those other fuckers (probably over some cow grazing in the wrong field).

    Most European countries couldn't stop the next asshole dictator with a funny hat if it weren't for the US military presence. They abdicated their responsibility to provide adequate national defense because they know they could rely on us to cover their ass. So basically the US taxpayers paid for all their social programs. I want my money back.

    At the very least, the fine should be triple the profits of their unlawful behavior. Optimally, the bank should be broken up and the pieces sold off. At some point a business can not be allowed to remain in business. Wells Fargo was well past that point.

    When driving in San Francisco, it's damn near impossible to NOT get that close to pedestrians. They ignore traffic signals, they don't bother to use crosswalks, they'll walk right into traffic and expect YOU to slam on your brakes or try to violate the laws of physics.

    Currently, H1B visas are being abused by the employers. They have, effectively, a slave. Complain, get fired, lose your visa. It's a simple fix. Tie the H1B visa to the worker, not to the company. Make it easy for the visa holder to change jobs. It shouldn't be any more difficult than updating an online form with new employment information. This will eliminate the worst of the abusers. One other change I would make. H1B visa holders should be barred from working for a contracting company.
