    Nope it's simpler than that- OS X was not allowed because of easy access to Objective C libraries. Cocoa is frowned on as a "Performance Enhancing Language"

    Of course dollar for dollar the first spam sent was quite a lot cheaper. But when you account for inflation and the reduction in volume per can (from roughly 0.00084 Volkswagens to roughly 2 iPods) the price is actually $0.40USD/Can more expensive

    - Can you imagine a Beowulf cluster of these?
    - How long until the RIAA sues them into oblivion once they find out how may MP3's you can put on one?
    - "Can you put Linux on it?" or "Yes, but will it run Linux?"
    - "Yeah, but does it run Doom3?" or "And it still won't run Doom3."
    - Any comment regarding "Duke Nukem Forever" taking literally 'forever' and being termed 'vaporware'.
    - I am not buying one until they support ".ogg".
    - I for one welcome our new (insert name of company mentioned in post or story) overlords.
    - "George Lucas raped my childhood" or "Greedo shoots first" comments on any story incorporating the Star Wars franchise.
    - A comment including these 3 components in any order: Natalie Portman, naked and petrified, hot grits, one's pants.
    - Microsoft = Evil, MPAA = Evil, RIAA = Evil; with anything else incorporated to try and fit those equations into the topic at hand
    - Some type of reference to the size of one's ProN collection, the amount of ProN that can be stored on the gadget or technology in question, or the ProN industry itself being the first to make good sue of the new technology or gadget in question (ergo: the ProN industry drives technology)
    - The posted cliché being self-described as an "obligatory" post in the heading area if that particular cliché had not been addressed yet by previous slashdotters. (e.g. "obligatory Beowulf cluster comment")
    - Post revealing the fact that the story's homepage had been slashdotted already, culminating towards another post later on with the homepage story itself being copied & pasted verbatim (often with a subsequent post purporting that this is karma whoring, even though the poster admits it is indeed helpful anyways.)
    - Remark on the size of some new storage advancement about how many LOC's (Library of Congresses) can fit on it, or any other remark noting how this can be an actual valid unit of data storage measurement.
    - A variation of the Zero Wing video game intro dialogue regarding it's broken English translation: "Someone set up us the base....we have every ZIG, make your time".....blah, blah, blah.
    - Very soon lists such as this will be clichés as well.

    but it seems like patents for a tablet style PC could easily be applied to the next generation iMac. It's likely that it's an all in one design with the components behind the lcd.

    I've never heard a whip crack- but up here at the lake we used to hear sonic booms from SR71s about one day every 4 months or so. One boom was strong enough to shake the spoon out of my Lucky Charms on a Sunday morning in our mobile home. (all those happy memories)

    Why is Linux too much to ask? You know it comes in a box now. Granted I'm a MacOS X user to the core- but if the school has all X86 hardware Linux is a more viable option than MacOS X.

    Why they have all X86 is more on topic though. At my school it was a short sighted Principal who likes to pretend he's big into computers. I think that's the case most of the time. There was no evidence that price/upkeep was even evaluated for Macs, it was just assumed that they were more expensive.

    XML is great and all but there are a few killer disadvantages. It can be really really slow. It can mean generating huge files. A well documented open format is better than a "human readable" XML template. How many XML files have you looked at that have this kind of thing :

    Sometimes XML is not the answer. That being said there are also so really great uses, but XML was not made for everything.

    What's easier? Getting Photoshop from a store without paying/ getting caught or downloading it off hotline.

    What's easier for a minor? Buying porn at a brick and mortar shop or doing a quick google.

    What is less intimidating- Stealing a CD from a retail outlet or downloading it online from the comfort AND UNREGULATED privacy of his own home.

    Not bloody likely. More like every Sony (and only Sony) device that plugs into the wall and isn't a PC, and requires massive processor power- that is to say you won't find video cameras and DVD players "Powered by CELL&#153;" (unless it integrates a PS3).

    Ummm...no it won't, Sony is freakin huge (they have departments that sue their other departments) and a single failed chip will not sink the company.

    looking past then next 2 years of development, and really looking 10+ years from now.

    The Cell comes out in 2006. 2006-2004=2

    Sony sells millions of x86 processors every year. As long as there's no SonyOS or MS Windows for CELL&#153; don't expect that to change.

    I doubt you will find an American manufacturer who can compete there.
