I think it's only a matter of time before kids figure out how to optimize their papers to fool the machines. Kind of like the way people optimize web pages to do essentially the same thing. They're both looking to get good grades.
I remember when I first started creating web pages, there were people that insisted that there can never be any layout of any kind other than flat paragraphs and line breaks in a hyper text document in order for it to remain true hypertext.
Well... I'm not going to say they were wrong either. But those guys that started in the begining of things had a different take on things.
Kind of the same way the next generation will consider your ideas about the way things work to be wrong, misinformed, or... quaint.
I think the term no duh comes into play here. Starbucks and friends use coffee that is derived from espresso. Espresso tends to have more caffeine in it. I could have told you that.
If you want to get angry, get angry at the soda manufacturers that put caffeine where it shouldn't be (unidentified citrus soda?) as a play to get you hooked. Last I checked oranges and corn syrup didn't naturally have caffeine in them.
There was an expose about it on the local news here in Indy awhile back. They said it compares to what the tobacco industry does with nicotine.
The only difference...
Nobody really cares.
Yeah, That's all fine and good, but wasn't there a case last year where the legality of spamming someone else's site through spyware was determined to be legal? Annoying... yes, and the legality of the spyware itself... questionable. But the ads themselves, unfortunate as it may be should be totally legal under that precident.
This is another example of dropping productivity because of putting corporate resources in places where no one except the truest of the true will ever go. Hey I wonder if something like this would account for all the anti linux stuff in comp.os.linux.advocacy. See, I did find a way to make this about microsoft! Hah hah!
I'm still not very into this whole Xindi plotline and I hope they'll do something more recognizable on the Trek timeline next season. But it does seem like the writers have finally started hitting their stride within the framework they've been given so far, the actors are fine (and in some cases excellent), I've gotten used to the show's "look", etc.
Good points. Have you noticed how a lot of the in door sets they've been using lately pay homage to the original series? Like the Xindi chamber last week for example. God I'm a nerd. Sitting on Slashdot talking about the nuances of star trek stage design. Never mind.
Reminds me of the interview the dailyshow did a few weeks back where the interviewed a spammer who kept complaining about the unsolicited e-mail he gets from anti-spam activists. These people are bastards. They are serving no useful or productive purpose.
Here's a link. This one has some amusing text in addition to the original content.
Is this guy actually affiliated with Microsoft? Really? I would expect ms to be just a little more tactful. If they are behind this, and other things like it, then they probably know something we don't. This is the kind of thing the reeks of fear. And you know what they say about open source developers. We can smell fear a mile away, heh heh.
Ha! Good one! You're quite right. I still say it's only a matter of time before we adopt the metric system. But like patent reform here, I'm not holding my breath on it.
You obviously do not understand either capitalism or socialism. There are no true socialists anymore. There are no true capitalists anymore. Not even here in the US. Every successful government in the world is a mix of the two.
While you cannot group all open source programmers and programs together; many are rigorous and respectful of the intellectual property rights, while others speak of intellectual property rights with open contempt."
But just because you think software patents are evil doesn't mean that you're breaking the rules with your stuff. It just means that you have an idology, and possibly a big mouth. Open source code depends on people obeying the rules on IP. Saying that linux is an unlicensed or "stolen" dirivitive work based on Unix is an awfully big claim to make without showing a line of code. I think this guy is either an idiot, or trying to capitalize on the mess with SCO. Obviously there are people that read this stuff.
If this goes through, and is successful in Europe, I would imagine that it would only be a matter of time before the US conforms to a similar system. That would certainly make my life easier. Europeans aren't so bad. Many of the things they're doing in modern Europe are downright sensible. Socialized medicine for example. But that's a subject for another post. Glad to see it's not the whole world that gone mad. Just us crazy Americans...
Maybe all the investor pressure is making him think before he speaks. I think maybe he's starting to understand that all this grand standing is bad for business.
Could be. But they also said that it there's no garauntee that it won't combine itself with HIV and create something magnatudes worse.
They are essentially the same basic virus, just with the active bits changed. A new mutant virus is not just possible, but likely. I would hold off and watch this new treatment very closely... if I had any reason to.
Yeah. You're probably right. I knew it sounded too easy.
So wouldn't it be possible to block chinese ip ranges to stop spam?

Great. Now if they could just classify paypal as a bank we'de be in good shape.
This is great. I wonder if the law will hold up in court. These are exciting times. No precidents for any of this.
Nice link. Thanks.

Or why not posticcino?

I happen to like Enterprise.
I think it's well written, well casted, and I wouldn't mind seeing more of it.

To karma whore for a little and quote the article

What?
Yeah. Let's just hope they're not running windows...
Hey, this could tie into the future weapons of war story too. Bush wants to blow up the parrell universes. Finally, it all makes sense.
Could be.

And watch out for the squirrels with grenades. They don't have much in the way of motor skills. I adopted one. We called him stumpy. .
