    first of all, that is GNU/emacs. Second of all, did it ever occur to anyone that a text editor should be used for editing text. It should not give you html tags. it should not color your code. it should just display what you wrote. next thing you know we'll be seeing GNU/Clippy. "it looks like you're designing a web page. it looks like you're designing a web page." wtf. text editors should not be made up of over a million lines of code. what happened to the good old days of vi. screw RMS, he should have stuck with compilers.

    IANATE (I am not a troll either). I wrote a java implementation of the file browser (Finder), and I am trying to use it to copy a 17.6MB files from my desktop to my home folder, and I have been sitting here for 20 minutes and its nowhere near complete. I could do the same thing on my 533 MHz Celeron in under a minute.

    last time the worms were running around at the office, we did not have any macs, linux, solaris, and *bsd boxes to not get infected b/c some PHB went for the M$ commercials hook line and sinker.

    f I'm not mistaken, they're mostly visual, so you just need something that looks like a retina -- and the machine isn't going to complain if you're holding up your "eye" to the censor as opposed to leaning down to it.

    all you have to do is put your eye against the glass of a copy machine ....

    I'm surprised no one has mentioned any of the papers by RMS. While not so much technical, they address many issues relating to developing software.

    again, like in everything else parenting, the only way to do it well is to take a serious interest in what your children are doing. Either
    A. Constanly be there when they are using the machine. or
    B. get an isp which will report all the sites that your children go to. And then go through the list carefully, making sure there are no sites in there you dont want them seeing.

    All other ways, such as blocks will not work b/c they will either let in too much bad, or not let in enough good, or both.

    Nobody ever said parenting was easy.
