Wow. I have a client that currently runs about 400 thin clients simultaneously on a dual Athlon 2800+ MP and 4GB of RAM using LTSP. That's with KDE, OOo1.1, Scribus, GIMP, etc. What applications are YOU running? CAD?
So did win98, but guess what... they all suck. Run the "Built in" version of defrag and then a decent defrag program like diskeeper demo. You'll see. Not to mention the built-in can't degrag the swap file.
Here's an opportunity for dialogue, and you just piss all over it. Let me guess...American?
Sigh.
I don't guess it would do any good if I just asked you please not to participate in this thread, huh? There are plenty of places on the Internet where you can yell about how much you hate Americans. Do you have to pollute this one particular thread with it, too?
It's all a bit conspiracy from Apple. iPod. iTunes. GiB. They're hoping to get it "popular" and then patent it, reverse licensing everything and what not.
Do you think the small amount of money you and everyone else spends on your TV programming pays for the shows you do watch. If the ads go away, so do all of the shows. Oh, and those magazines would diappear, too. Think, McFly. Think.
I would recommend you start with Gentoo and move to Debian or Suse.
Before I'm modded flamebait, here's why: 1)Gentoo has some of the best install documents in the Linux community 2)It requires that you set up a lot of things by hand (system logger, kernel if you choose expert, etc) 3)It has some of the best forums/support around. Even Gentoo critics admit this.
After you get gentoo working on your box, wipe it and reinstall. After the fourth or fifth time, you'll actually have learned something. Then wipe and install Debian: 1) Debian has the largest volunteer following. 2) Deb has one of the simplest updgrade paths 3) If you choose stable, its old but very secure. 4)Suse is pretty darned awesome, too. 5)Then make a customized patched kernel for the heck of it.
Just my two cents. I took the Gentoo->Debian Road for the simple reason of learning and it helped.
One reason girls (not women) have periods earlier now is because of an increase level of hormones externally introduced to the body at earlier ages.
Many parents don't realize that adult shampoos (and other products) have a lot of adult hormones that affect their children... sometimes "kickstarting" puberty. I know of several families who stay away from hormonal products specifically for this reason and their daughters didn't start having periods until 2-3 years after all of their peers.
I can't believe what all I have read here in replies. Many times the answer to a question is RTFM and now I'm reading RTF-Source-Code? Come on, people!
iBuild does exactly what I want, but I didn't really have time to read the code, and most people who use it don't either. I realized this and spent hours and hours testing and writing the howto (a bit outdated, atm) and it allows people (who could read the code if they wanted and had the time) to start being productive within a few minutes instead of a few hours.
I wrote a sample howto and sent it to the programmer to show I was serious, which is needed (someone below mentions a lot of blown smoke from volunteers).
The fact is true... OSS needs better documentation, but the developers shouldn't necessarily be the ones doing it. THey should CODE.. that's what they do. An end user that writes the way end users read should document with access to the developer.

Yeah, I like buying a computer for, oh say $50 and then paying $60 shipping.
I like the nick. It speaks volumes for your comment. :)
3 XP? Dang, I only have SP2 for XP installed. Missed SP3 XP.
You can still order a Tuscan here in Ft. Worth Panera.
On another note: Microsoft's anti-spyware actually works after the trojan and deletes all files and folders in C:\WINDOWS
Um, WinXP need 256 more than KDE does. What will LongHorn require? "Only 1GB"

um, winipcfg.
duh.
I saw the TV special, too. Their computer system is the "second largest next to the Pentagon" according to the show.

Check out Morphix.org A slimmed down version of Knoppix and several people on irc already doing the thumb-drive boot.
Only on /. would you see this.
Person1: Xbox is cheap.
Person2: ALL you need is athlon 64, ram, cdrom, case
Person1: athlon 64 is more expensive
Person2: no. athlon 64 chip is cheaper
Person1: Um, given you need OTHER components: Xbox is cheap.

Interesting that you have to post AC.
Am I the only one that read this "Recording Industry Hoist By their Own Retard?"
It might run Longhorn, but will it run Doom III? Ooooo... Duke Nukem: Forever?
"it would be real nice if Linux is called UNIX"
How about LUnix?
Yeah... over time, his failures would have made themselves evident, so he would actually have been promoted to a higher position.

Sleep? bah.... that's just an inadequate substitute for caffeine.

I wrote a howto for a build-a-live-cd-on-the-fly called Intellibuild http://ibuild.livecd.net/
