Case in point -- the article itself. Few people see anything wrong with MIT promoting one gender over another as long as the gender they are promoting is female.
Who modded this crap insightful?
..... I was about to make a long post about this but I dont really have the energy so I'll just ask the parent if he likes being on the other end of the discrimination stick than he's used to?
Or to make it absolutely clear: You seem to like it fine when the gender being promoted is yours?
It exists. I think it was panasonic a few years ago that put 4 or 5 lasers in one CD-ROM unit, read at 50x or so but spun really slow (compared to other equal speed drives) hence quieter and more reliable (didn't stress the motor as much).
I think the problem was that it was too expensive.
3 years... sheesh, those administrators sure knows how to work effectively.
Isn't there a chance that the appeal will be summarily (sp?) turned down? I thought that an appeal for a new trial was only granted when there was new evidence available?
(I just submitted this like 1 minute before it was on the frontpage... sigh.. if only once I'd get a story accepted:-)
All of its gear still exists, and Russian males still have to join the military when they reach 18. Give Russia a reason and they could become a major power in short order.
Some of the gear still exists, but much of it is in ruins. The navy for example has few working subs and ships left, and the air force bases are in very bad condition even if they've done their outmost to keep the planes in working order. I just dont agree that they could be "a major power in short order". It would take time. Sure they could have a large number of soldiers but they would be poorly equipped and not have much air and sea support.
Ruthless he is. Intelligent he is not. Most of what he does is completely transparent and predictable. And he's very poor at actually getting the public to accept him. Putin's power comes almost entirely from his Mafia (i.e. KGB) connections and not his blinding intelligence. Probably a good thing though. Otherwise we'd have another Napoleon or Hitler on our hands. (Although Napoleon was WAY smarter than Hitler.)
Sure he's transparent and ruthless. He's trying to stay in power with whatever means necesary. The fact that he's succeded for many years now means to me he's a sharp politician.
It's my favorite example of an EU nation that's disarming because it's politically popular. They've gutted their military so badly that they've apparently invented a word to describe the process! (Sorry, my friend in Sweden didn't tell me what the word was, just that it existed.)
Ah.. now I understand what you meant (I am swedish:-). Your friend is basically correct though there are some justifications for the cutbacks (I dont agree with them though). Having the 4th/5th largest airforce in the world isn't really feasible in the long term for a nation which is maybe the 100th richest in the world (in total GDP, not per capita which is much higher) so therefore we cut it (sad, but understandable). The rest of the cutbacks are just stupid though. The official slogan is "smaller but sharper", I dont know the word your friend was refering to.
The US did just as much to stop the Nazis as europe. That is to say, nothing until they where attacked themselves. The only people who deserve any credit for actually joining the war even though they didn't really have to (at that point in time) are the Britts (of course it was inevitable that they'd have to join eventualy since Hitler was a fruitcake).
1) A military buildup of russia would take on the order of decades, it's military is in complete ruins right now.
2) Do *not* underestimate Putin. He is highly intelligent and an extremely sharp politician. He is opposed by very very powerful and ruthless oligarks and also often by the equaly powerful and even more ruthless russian mafia. Just managing to stay on top for years in these conditions requires extreme skill.
3) What does Sweden have to do with this? It's a very small nation.
I tried to stop myself but I just have to say something in the face of your blatant stupidity:
1) You're so stupid you think beeing forced to walk around in female underware is the problem here? They've been routinely tortured and abused, and several of them have been murdered by american prison guards while in prison. This is not the same thing as being killed with a weapon in hand, or while attacking someone. If you think this is acceptable treatment of prisoners, why don't you move to china or something? You clearly dont belong in 'the land of the free', and neither does you current administration.
2)The people in prison where suspected terrorists/criminals. Most of them might be guilty, but I promise you, some where/are not (even your own army commanders admit this).
Next time you're unfairly put in prison, knowing it'll probably take a year before you're aquitted, remember when the guards are beating you to death that "it's ok, I am after all a suspected terrorist"
Charles Krauthammer (another republican editor from US news and world report) once called for parking an US aircraft carrier off the coast of france to intimidate them
Oh dear... I *really* hope he was just joking. Can you imagine the hatred that would create? You think the EU is anti-US today? Just wait and see what happens if your government tries something like that:-)
And it certainly wouldn't increase the chance of the EU to do Americas bidding, quite the opposite...
Absolutely. The total tax pressure in sweden is very high. Around 80-90% if I recall correctly. However, when people speak about taxlevel they generaly mean direct income tax, and thats why I said 30-35%.
If we look at total tax pressure most other countries, including ol' US, are above 50% (...again IIRC).

I agree that with higher tax pressure you expect more service from the government (and that 65% figure, while true, is a bit extreme and only applies to the very highest income brackets.. most people pay 30-35% income tax in sweden).
BUT.
We do not have a specific "broadband tax" in sweden, which means that the first things you should make sure is properly funded by the government should be important things like schools and healthcare (which arent properly funded). Not silly things like fiberlinks to every house.
And thankyou for clearing up who the hell these people where when I saw them yesterday. I couldnt hear what the hell the nerd was mumbling into his microphone (I live in the town on the picture that is "just great"... yay Umeå!).
You're basically right but there's one more factor that comes into play when we're talking about pollution: Distribution of polluters.
Even if we have to have powerplants to create our hydrogen fuel, it would be much better to have a bunch of such plants in each country than to have millions of polluting cars in each country. It's much easier to make sure the factories are as clean as possible than to make sure each car doesn't pollute.
General rule in environmental issues: the less distributed the sources of pollution are, the better.
What are you talking about?
WoW is an RPG, not an RTS. It has nothing in common with the mechanics of the original warcraft games.
To be clear: You dont order groups of units around, you play a single character at a time.
Yes MS would probably do fine without the european market, they'd lose a sizeable chunk of revenue but theyd still make a lot of money.
The problem is that since MS would basically be outlawed in europe, people would just use pirated windows copies until they had time and opportunity to make a swith to Linux or osX or whatever. And the police wouldnt mind since MS products wouldnt be protected by copyright laws.
So europe wouldnt lose anything while MS would lose lots. And worse (for MS) backing out of the EU market would leave it wide open for MS competitors to grow in and make lots of money and (gasp!) eventually maybe be big enough to take on MS everywhere.
Not a physics degree but I do know that, yes, the reactor itself will indeed be radioactive, but that is not the problem. The radioactive material contained in a conventional fission reactor is not the problem, the remains of the *fuel* used in the reactor is the problem.
The dangerous parts of a reactor is on the order of tons, maybe a few 10's of tons. It can be handled fairly easily and it's half-life is no more than a "few" hundred years. The fuel OTOH, is thousands of tons, more radioactive and has a half-life of tens of thousans of years.
So while a fusion reactor will be just as radioactive as a fission reactor, it will produce very litle dangerous fuel leftovers, which is very very good.
Nights Dawn... mmm... now *that* is a great series. Gets my vote for 'best space opera ever'. I was a bit sceptic after the first book. Sure it was incredibly entertaining and massive in scope but I was affraid it was gonna turn into something about heaven/hell which it didnt, thank god...
The books gives me the 'shit.. did one guy create all this?' feeling.. a bit like George Martin.
I know this is of topic, dont waste your mod points, just ignore it:-)

I'm not familiar with the mobile phone systems in the US, but i'm sure GSM is TDMA (Time Division), while 3G/UMTS is CDMA (Code Division)

What about it? Dont you think we have one as well in Europe? I assure you, we do...
Ta det inte personligt, jag hörde faktiskt inte :-)
Kan ju ha berott på att jag var en bit därifrån iofs.
100% percent sure. Total tax pressure, including vat and other stuff, gets much higher of course.
Also it depends which income bracket you're in. Below ap. 250.000-300.000 SEK it's around 33% in most places.

I'm not a Cruise fan but I think he's not *that* bad. Sure all the movies you named sucks, but he's done many others:
Interview with a vampire - decent movie of a decent book, where Cruise really made the best character in the movie.
Eyes wide shut - crappy movie but good acting.
Magnolia - Great movie with good acting.
Far and away - havent seen it but certainly not action.
Vanilla sky - Bad remake of good original movie with ok acting.
Get real.
