"My freedom is not in jeopardy because I elected to use MacOS X on an Apple G5 (my wallet was but not not my freedom)."
I'm sorry but you are wrong here, you are at Apple mercy. If they choose to drop the support for the OS, to stop the development, or to include a backdoor in their OS you have no say in that matter.
"Stallman presumes that his intelligence and knowledge give him the right to not respect the boundaries of others."
I'm sorry but I can't see where he steps over the boundaries of others, but I clearly see where you do exactly that when you imply that he suffers from Asperger's Syndrome.
I remember the day when US started to bomb Serbia, on 5 major channels for 3 hours they showed a 30 mph car chase (it was during rush hour) of a guy who "stole" his own car, at news this was the fist item, the last one was a 10 seconds piece of information that NATO airplains from Aviano have started to bomb Belgrade -- talking about priorities.
"possibly using Von Neuman Machines"
Interesting choice of words... I hope it's a joke, otherwise I'd have to consider you a pretentios SOB... the most annoying kind of SOBs.
That's because geeks are always fast to criticize any idea because, of course, they are smarter than the rest... even smarter than Steve Jobs for example.
I switched to Abiword exactly because of that reason. However I discovered oooqs program (OOo Quick Starter) for KDE and I switched back to OOo.
OpenOffice starts now in 2 seconds, that's good enough for me.
Pat, just don't get upset because people don't understand your situation, it's not worthy.
Especially don't pay attention what you see here on slashdot, I read it at 4+ and still I see lot of bad posts, I made the mistake to switch to 0+ and I was appalled.
Wish you best of luck! Get healthy!

Correct, I just wanted to point out that in many cases the wide held opinion was just plain wrong, as it was the case with the Sun orbiting the Earth belief....
This is a great article that shows what a Desktop Linux could do. It's a great piece for Linux advocates to forward to people who'd like to switch but think that "Linux is way too hard to install and use".
0$ price it's very hard to beat, I expect that the forces of the economy will swipe MS away as soon that people realize that they could do with Linux the same things they do with Windows (only more secure and cheaper) . Good times ahead:)
I. Am. In. The. Market. And. I. Give. A. Fuck. Or. Two.
Why? And why is this "Insightful", I'd say "funny" was more appropriate.
so... why would Linux need the patent for turning shit into powder?
Now seriously, do you think that all 40,000 patents have application in Linux?

US News = shit

"But in a similar disaster, we'd probably be at a disadvantage to crows and rats."
I heard rats are quite tasty, so if they survive people will survive too.
Isn't this a confict of interest?
I mean, you make a crappy product and than you sell fixes for it, wouldn't that be an incentive to keep making the product as crappy as possible?
Not that Microsoft need incentive for that...
Linux needs to offer something Windows doesn't
Freedom? Isn't that good enough?
Why not go all the way: turn off the computer.

Yeah...great piece of information....
"Gnome people in general don't like toolbars"
So why the heck they put 2 toolbars on the screen one on top and one on buttom. Why developers assume that anybody has a 19 inch monitor?
That's because geeks are always fast to criticize any idea because, of course, they are smarter than the rest... even smarter than Steve Jobs for example.
Oh goody, I will be cheap... yuppee :)

I guess Phoenix was a appropriate name ;)
it looks like according to MSN, Debian is the best operating system, Sun is the second.. Windows doesn't even appear on the first page.
Correct, I just wanted to point out that in many cases the wide held opinion was just plain wrong, as it was the case with the Sun orbiting the Earth belief....
Also we should not forget that if 95% of the scientists believe something it doesn't mean that that is the truth either.

Will you assume a GOD made it?
Desktop Linux has just published this article: The Best Free Desktop Linux . . . and how to make it better

I, for one, welcome our Republican Overlords.
Of course I didn't read the article that I linked to, what do you expect... this is slashdot ;-)
OK, I stand corrected, this IS big news, this supercomputer will remain the fastest in the world for 35 more days, amazing.
