The driver of theft is the scrap metal price. You think copper is bad, brass is worse, nothing like losing all the large bore brass fire fittings, hydrants, booster valves etc. Some metal merchant was quite happy to buy them time and time again and of course the hazard to property can be extreme in the case of a defunct fire fighting system.
So simply require a photo to be taken of every person selling scrap metal and all merchants to be licences with criminal penalties applied for failing to adhere to the law.
So, hmm, oddly enough tightly controlled business practices rather than foolish 'free' trade where maximum profit is the only concern is appropriate is a lot more business areas than people generally think about. In this case the problem is not so much the people stealing the product but the business people buying the stolen product with a 'we know where you got it from' discount.
The missing part in the shift from windows to Linux is actually M$ itself. In order for Ballmer to survive after his Vista and Office fiascos he has to force upgrades or M$ will suffer a major drop in revenue. The revenue drop will be forced by companies who demand to hold on to their existing software licences and transfer them to new replacement systems. No upgrades will cripple M$ revenue base, the current failing method of business as touted and run by ballmer. This business method has created a lot of customer ill will not in the business sector but also in retail, which is why M$ has enormous problems generating a profit in technology areas where it actually has to compete.
M$ fails badly as a web business and loses money hand over fist, it either attempts to use more aggressive tactics to force customers into sticking with the endless upgrade cycle and takes the risk of customers actually 'upgrading' to alternative better systems or suffers a major revenue slump. M$ management is stuck, they are more concerned with their own positions then the future success of the company, they categorically lack the expertise to make the shift to new business practices as has been demonstrated by their current failures.
So basically they are likely to continue in their current path or basically forcing customers to make the change to Linux to get away from M$'s anti-customer business practices.
Actually that is very misleading. Most 'leading' open source projects ie. office suite, browser, operating system etc. is done by major corporations with a degree of enlightened self interest. They know that it is far cheaper to cooperatively develop the key software programs than continue to pay inflated licence fees on forced upgrades and deal with the high cost of implementing those pointless upgrades.
M$ profits are quite simply other companies costs added to that the additional cost to those companies of M$ poor coding and business practices which is hundreds of times the cost of the already hundreds of billions of dollars expended on pointless software licences, literally trillions of dollars thrown our of the 'windows'.
Basically a lot of leading corporations know full well that M$ in nothing but a burden and a drag upon technology economy, so upon a purely capitalistic basis they are working together to create a far more cost competitive essential suite of software programs.
Now of course a lot of the individuals involved in the FOSS movement accept this even when their own personal effort is mainly about bridging the digital divide and making technology more accessible to every person on the planet, a technology that is an enabler of open communications, the sharing of ideas and the breaking down of cultural barriers to create, well, a better world:).
And you know the description of the real problem is just as simple. ISPs should simply stop selling something they don't fucking have. Stop over selling bandwidth, stop the deceit about the bandwidth they claim to be selling to you versus the bandwidth they actually have available to sell to you.
More power to bit torrent to force the ISP's to either supply the bandwidth they claim to be selling and start telling the truth about what they are really selling to customers.
Ahh, the ultimate dead end. I want to change software but the new software must integrate with the old M$ software hence I can never change except to pay for endless pointless upgrades because of cause the existing software must comply with the new operating system which must integrate with the required upgrades.
Either make do with a little less integration and pointless reports for a short period of time or accept the fact that will you and your company are quite simply M$ 'marks' (as in they have you totally conned).
Leaving yourself and you company stuck like that, incapable of making choices in the tools you will use and having your supplier dictate to you what tools you will use and how often you will update them and how they will work, will eventually mean you fall victim to more competitive companies who decide for themselves, who can change and adapt and who will squeeze the maximum buck out of the software overhead burden.
Valve is most likely looking at the medium to long term market of netbook computers, really huge numbers of low priced FOSS based computers. A very competitive games distribution network, for low priced game sales and those games will have to really efficient and run well on minimal resources.
It makes sense to get the bugs out and smooth out the interface now, so that will be be able to more effectively target multi player gaming on netbooks, hundreds of millions of low cost school netbooks is bound to become a very targeted market.
The whole article smells of nothing but a major google pump up. Harsh economic times and the stock price stagnates, what better than "Wong and her colleagues arguably have more influence over the contours of online expression than anyone else on the planet' or 'Wong and her colleagues will continue to exercise extraordinary power over global speech online'. Even the long abandoned by google "Don't be evil" which every should know by now has been replaced with 'you don't need to be evil' makes an appearance.
Tough times put a hard squeeze on advertising dollars and google spam words, are a tough sell even at a low price.
When it comes to search engines google, msn and yahoo are all prety much the same, with each of them at times producing slightly better results than the the others. The be honest the only search engine that I have found to far out perform the others in terms of giving me the answers I am looking for, wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engine and there is of course http://www.dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Searching/Search_Engines// the open directory project.
Your underlying premise is foolish. Shuffling a deck of cards is either complex beyond human understanding, or a relatively simple probability exercise simply based upon the outcome your are interpreting. Either the simple outcome of the order of the cards, or if you were looking for something more complex, how would the shuffling of the cards alter the disposition of bacteria upon the surface of your fingers and would any patterns emerge in their subsequent arrangement upon and within the surface of the cards.
Both the complex and simple events occur simultaneously it is simply a living interpretation of the significance of the probability outcomes. In the case of the creation of set patterns or a universe playing out a set pre-defined chain reaction, does life in defining the complexity not alter it and induce randomness by that interaction, as a matter of choice as to which element of the probability outcomes to focus on and react too and hence what new patterns outside of the original interaction are continuously set in motion.
We are stuck in the between world and our under standing is bound to and limited by our current physical form, we see and interpret the surface of the interactions a thin virtually insignificant sliver of the over all complexity and we assign whatever forms and patterns to that as will comfort us in our insignificance.
Nah, not really all that much to worry about, as Australia would not so much be partnering with the EU but be an equal partner with each of the individual member states. Also in the case of being arrested there is the additional protection of being a citizen of a member state rather than a foreign nation. These global partnerships are becoming a fact of life, so it either the US with Australia as an exploited junior partner, Asia again to be dominated by China and Japan or Europe where there are already are significant cultural ties.
Politicly at the moment there certainly are potential partnerships in the Space Science & Industry Sector that Australia can participate in. With the current growth in Russia it is likely that there will be a renewed impetus for a space program and they will likely be seeking the political benefits of taking on what a viewed as western partners. So now is a good time to start developing those space partnerships outside of the previous US centric bias. So partnerships with India, Russia or Europe would very likely be in Australia's interest and provide a means for extended political and social discourse.
Not to forget as it is work related, regardless of M$=B$, the operating system doesn't provide the work interface with the company data, the applications do, so part of the work boot, is the starting of applications and the loading of data so the employees can actually start working. You have to be very careful with the B$ boot times of Vista, as not all required services are running once the GUI is active, 'delayed booting' (a cynical marketing exercise) and, this actually slows down the starting of all applications that require those necessary services that have failed to start and now start slower due to the active Windows GUI interface now sucking up system resources. Net result, really slow boot times to working applications thanks to a B$ marketing scheme by M$ to reduce magazine rated boots to GUI interface activity.
Hmm, universal health care, USA, 'NO' not ever but you have had democrats in power many times. Tariffs are a typical conservative policy designed to 'protect' existing industrialists, don't confuse the current US administration with conservatives, they were simply con men fronting for s select group of wealthy individuals ie. protect financial companies, oil companies and media companies but don't give a rats about automakers or other manufacturers. Abortion is neither left nor right it is a matter of personal choice as for high taxes, be careful, as you must combine state and federal taxes to get a realistic overall taxation level in the US and when you do, taxation is very high in the US regardless of party in power all that varies is the biases in what they choose to spend it on.
In a global sense, the democrats to date are very much centre right (just off centre towards the right) and the republicans I don't really know where you really do put pseudo Christian lobbyists on the political scale, technically for the bunko artists they are, they really belong on criminal scale but, the far right is a convenient place to park them, this is likely to change as real republicans are now starting to take actions to regain control of their political party ie. make a very public showing of throwing those individuals who have betrayed the party in prison for their corruption (a worth while political tactic to regain popularity).
Let us just consider the idea of people not being bothered by advertisements while they are working. Let us ponder employers who would be happy with the employees watching adds about employments agencies and new places of employment while they are working. How about holidays and overseas trips while they are meant to be concentrating. Could you imagine a customer having an embedded add from your competitor buried in the document you sent them.
Seriously, any foolish company that would accept adds in the workplace or be happy to give away all it's business intelligence for hosted applications when FOSS software like OpenOffice.org is available and will always be available, permanently free of any licence fees or subversive messages, is fated to disappear.
You are obviously terribly confused. A political party is defined by it's actions not by the labels it chooses to advertise under. So the German Nazi party was far right, as private corporations functioned and profited during that whole period. All the arms manufacturers were private none of them where nationalised, citizens retained private ownership of resources and assets (at least the single group approved of by the party).
As for any associations with the intelligentsia, I see you have failed to hear of junk science, people who basically will trade upon their qualifications and say or write what ever they are paid to say or write. Technically Bill Ayers in his youth put forward his own opinions and with the impatience of youth expressed them in a questionable manner, behaviour which he had long since matured out of.
Now as for the whole gamut of right and left political bias, technically in a global sense the US does not have a leading left wing political party as the democrats and centre right and the republicans are far right, to see actual centre left political parties in action running countries you have to look overseas, Canada, Australia, England, etc. The outer edges of right and left politics has always demonstrated itself to be destructive, a grand deceit based upon propaganda and lies to empower and enrich a minority at the expense of the majority, from Hitler and Stalin, to Bush and Cheney, some of course are far more destructive than others but they have all been equally self serving and, any limits upon their actions have been forced upon them by outside influences rather than their own consciences.
A good indication of how centre a party is defined by it's willingness and hence the politicians of the parties willingness to be open to criticism, open to questions and open to ideas and not resorting to censorship to protect the facade they have created to hide their true nature.
China wants from nothing it is a country. The currently wealthy Chinese who control the government of China, want to continue polluting their environment and exploiting their feloow country men without restraint. It has nothing to do with modernising countries, in fact it clearly has the opposite effective of enforcing primitive working conditions, of lowering living standards for those with the least access to power and wealth, of extravagantly enriching the minority as they every means at their disposal to violently enforce their control over natural resources which they then ruthlessly exploit to sate their own perosnal lusts.
Seriously want to kerb the abuse, the implement fair trade, trade where they either pay the costs of fair pay and work conditions or the goods will be taxed to match that cost, trade where the either pay the costs of pollution control or the goods will be taxed to match that cost, trade where they either pay realistic taxes or those taxes will be applied when they reach their destination. In order for trade to be free, then that competition on trade must occur upon an equal basis.
First world, third world, it doesn't make a difference, no free and democratic country should ever support the exploitation of people or the destruction of the environment and quite simply the best way to tackle that is by placing that cost back upon imported product, product that has produced under conditions that are already illegal at the point of sale. They can either spend the money at the point of production and improve their working conditions and clean up their environment or those costs will be forced upon them at the sales destination, those countries that in future generations will have to clean up the mess of societies that have collapsed under the weight of their own abuses as well as of course the abuses foreign corporations and their sociopath executives.
That is what is really going on, not the opportunity for third world countries to develop but the greed of first world corporations and their willingness to ruthlessly exploit those third world countries and their people, all of course because it it far more profitable than being forced to adhere to reasonable labour laws and pollution controls. When corporate executives actions and decisions result in the death and suffering of tens of thousands of people, should they not be held accountable?

In this case it is likely true. The only way to accelerate clean boots would be to create it during shutdown, so a clean boot for standby or a clean boot for hibernation. Basically clearing memory of it's current running state and replacing it with a clean boot state and using that as the stored standby or hibernation state. Configuration changes would get messy. Far cleaner just to embed core elements of the Linux kernal straight into the CPU, you can only really do it with Linux because of course closed source immediately bars itself, because it is, closed source.
Well Windows ME is not a failure like Windows Vista, as far as M$ is concerned ME was a success. Vista was the thin edge of the wedge of content control, of bringing the xbox licensing system to their OS, where every bit of hardware, software and content would have an accompanying OS licence fee in order to be able to function, this crippled the OS. A major failure by Ballmer, who refuses to accept it, simply drop Vista and move on and, basically just keep win2kpro(XP) and continue debugging and updating it.
I have a feeling that everybody just ignores anything ballmer has to say, except of course if your work at M$. Star Office and Open Office are both ultimately competitors for google's privacy invasive cloud vision, it is hardly surprising that they would make changes to what they offer in an effort to push users to the cloud products. They are even going with the fear marketing model, oh no, the hackers will destroy your data, your hardware will fail, poorly configured, maintained and updated systems will destroy your business, only the googlites can so assuredly maintain servers (just a wee bit insulting to all the skilled linux system admins out there).
Oh, go away. Political bias in US media, sure is, US Media executives, out and out Republicans, US journalists trend to democrat, US junk journalists don't give a rats and will just write or speak what ever lies they are told to.
To say US mass media was biased towards the demoocrats is a lie, the executives run the companies and journalists who don't keep silent are soon replaced by junk journalists (the good ones return as independents on the web).
The republicans were simply stuck with a couple of lame candidates forced upon them by the current administration (they desperately needed candidates as corrupt as them to ensure they stay out of jail) making positive storeys extraordinarily difficult. Now this would normally not present a problem for the Mass Media B$ machine, however the internet has crippled that machine and they are still desperately trying to come up with ways of stopping the internet from forcing the truth and from the public itself defining the public mind state, rather than mass media, selling the public mind state to the highest bidder.
Windows ME was a complete success. Let's see, M$ wanted to end the two lines of OS, windows 98 and windows NT and just go with differential price breaks on the same code with arbitrary differences that enforce paying a higher price for the same code, hmm, broken networking and multi user. This is far more profitable than creating and maintaining two sets of code.
You would have to be a real bunch of arse holes though, as you would be knowingly selling a broken OS to kill off a line of code you don't want to maintain and knowingly be getting a bonus because people would have to buy a replacement for that broken OS.
So are M$ a big enough bunch of egg sucking, lying pack of bastards to do that, hmm, let me think.
So would the same company release exactly the same code, with claims of it being, faster, more stable and more secure than the previous version and get a whole bunch of journalists to go along with the yarn for as long as they can get away with it until an over whelming amount of evidence comes in from users that it is nothing but B$, have they done it before and, repeatedly?
Define a successful business executive. One who walks away with the best salary package, including golden parachute. Do not confuse an executive's success with a companies success and here is a hint 99% of business executive don't.
Competition in humanity. Race is a means by which you can eliminate large groups from competing for access for to the same resources, it create arbitrary race guidelines and 'your' group work together to undermine the 'other' group from competing upon an equal basis. The more competitive and aggressive a society, the greater the significance of failure in the denial of access to needed resources, the more pronounced the racism becomes.
Secondly another big driver of 'race' identity is guilt, guilt at unfairly applying racism and prejudice against other people for your advantage, the deep guilt of dehumanising other human beings, of treating them worse than you would a pet, the kind of guilt that really eats at you conscience and alters you behaviour and attitudes into quite appalling and sick patterns in order to protect yourself from it.
Thirdly is fear. The fear of becoming one of 'them', of being treated as you have treated 'them', of 'them' gaining power and forcing you into that position where you held 'them'.
So an unhealthy society with an excess of competition for resources where losing does mean dying, where burdens of guilt build up for willingness to see fellow humans suffer and die while you live in luxury and the fear of being punished for your greed and 'unchristian' (please supplant your religion of choice) behaviour, not only in this life but the one following. P) So race, it's nothing but a very primitive shared excuse, for being an arse hole;).

P) So race, it's nothing but a very primitive shared excuse, for being an arse hole ;).
Hmm, but do those random women want to sleep with you or just your wallet. So video games as in developing into a successful games developer, hmm, as far as I know that makes you desirable regardless of your sex and regardless of the pursuing sex, let's avoid red neck sexually based biases in all it's various combinations ;).
