The fact is this: companies love to play hardball to screw employees especially when it comes to NDAs, pre-employment agreements, and relocation packages.
Indeed, but I'd almost rather be homeless than work for a company like that anyways, to each their own I suppose...
My belief (and I wish I had the source to prove it) was that there were concerns about planes at low altitudes starting ground fires if flares were released. Seems like the least of your worries in regards to missile defense in general but hey gotta make sure everyone is happy.
Disclaimer: IANAL
The legal doctrine here is one of "Reasonable Expectation". For example if I bought a GPS device from a stranger on the street for $20, would a reasonable human assume that the deal is too good to be true and that it was probably stolen? Generally the judges would say yes. If said reasonable expectation were established, yes I'd be required to return the item and no I won't necessarily get compensated for it.
However, if I bought a GPS Device for $600 at Best Buy, and woah mamma! Best Buy picks a wrong supplier and it was stolen property. Nobody would have suspected it was stolen. The liability here shifts entirely to the thief and most likely I'm keeping my GPS device.
Now reasonable expectation that something selling on auction at Ebay like was said? Tough call, ask your local judge what he thinks of reasonable expectation...
I'm partial to the can of air trick when my cats try to hide under the bed...dual purpose use in my house here. Venting computer innards and flushing out a cat hidden somewhere I can't get to:-D
Indeed, quite often you find me giving "extra points towards a vote" for taking a stand on an issue rather than being all wishy washy and giving me nothing I can agree or disagree to. I've never found a candidate that is 100% like me but I do appreciate it when they're willing to tell me that they don't agree with me. Honesty doesn't necessarily guarantee a vote, but it goes a long ways....
I don't care if it's A or B. As a security guard I'm doing my job, and I'm sure A or B would understand why I thought that way if the police jumped them. It's that simple....
pay $50 to see it in the theater ($10 for 2 people,
Where do you find Movie tickets for $5 a head these days? Here in Orange County, CA movie tickets start at about $10/head except for Matinees maybe (certainly can't do a movie "night" anyways). Now granted Orange County is one of the most expensive places in the United States to live, but is it that much better elsewhere?
Then the movie people probably wonder why I don't go to the movies very much...
well you can partly workaround the OCR imperfection by accompanying the fax with a MD5 checksum as well. At least I know it's a bad fax rather than dare to flash my BIOS with an imperfect re-scanned fax. You could possibly build correction logic in there as well by including parity information in the fax, then creating some sort of program to regenerate with the parity information (available for download on the Internet of course *snicker*). However this is getting sick already, far past the point of diminishing returns:-)
There could have been a possibility of doing this, IIRC there was a technology awhile back that would allow you to "print" a file in a way that would enable it to be scanned and re-assembled on the other end in a relatively compact format. The idea was to do just that, fax a file. Can't remember anything more about it, granted for obvious reasons it never took off. But I do think it would have been possible to email him a BIOS if he had a scanner on the other end...
Mr. AC makes a subtle point. For example there are Spiders out there that produce enough poison to kill humans, yet have Wasps as natural predators who are immune to Spider Bites, we quite well could be resistant or immune to Cane Toad Venom as well. All the same don't expect me to go around eating Cane Toads...
Meh... "Oh I'm sorry the signal must be bad at my friend's house...try me when I'm not going there...". Just make a mental note that when you want to call Mom from said friend's house that you do it from their landline...
1) Tell parent you are going to a friends house...
2) At friend's house, tie Cellphone to family dog (make 'em think you're actually there and moving around)
3) ???
4) Profit!!!
Seriously, if you're going to have a department of lazy, inefficient slugs, you might as well have them for cheaper:-)
In addition, the very threat might make your IT department shape up real quick...nothing like the threat of losing your job to light a fire under your butt and get working.
By the way raymondsimms@hotmail.com I'd be careful using fullnames around stuff like that. An IT guy at your company is probably checking the company database right now for names that match that...prepare for the vengeance of an IT Guy.
For the truly paranoid, you could create the checksum and burn to CD. Every time you alter your boot, you'd have to burn a new CD but it might work. However the malware in question could in theory intercept the CD and attempt to burn a new checksum. I suppose then you could attempt to store it online someplace safe as well...dunno, the game of cat and mouse between virus writers and anti-virus writers continues yet again...
Cellular: The big providers (including AT&T via Cingular now) have a big chunk of that market, you're down to few competitors now (Cingular, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint and that's about it if you live in California).
VOIP: AT&T Started a service as well to enter there called AT&T CallVantage, it may be a more level playing field at the moment (Vonage, Skype, amongst many others), but it probably won't stay that way. Remember, for the most part VOIP is still going through AT&T owned hardware as well...
But I am a human being, and being told repeatedly that I suck tends to wear a human being down, especially when, on the whole, I think the work we do here is very good.
Indeed you are human, and as such you like everyone else are subject to forces which you can't control. Namely what other humans give you as feedback. Being that you have such a large audience; you can expect a lot of feedback, both positive and negative. There is just no way around it. The outside mail will be a force that you can only alter slightly at best.
However as you are human, you are capable of interperting the outside world and visualizing differently. The trick is just set up your keyword filtering to dodge the flames as best you can, and maybe do something positive every-time a flame slips past into your inbox (take that moment to chuck your Thinkgeek microbe across to the next cube perhaps?). You'll find life more enjoyable once you don't really care:-)
Not meant to be critical, but I'm wondering if you're letting the flames and hate mail about posted articles get to your head. A good book to read is the 7 Habits of Highly effective people (ISBN: 0743269519 at your favorite bookstore). However in short from that book, I'm wondering whether or not you're letting outside factors you can't really control get to you. Unfortunately there will always be people who will simply not choose to read or ignore what you have to say and will always send you hate mail and flames regarding this. Don't let it get to your head, ever, or they've won.
Post the articles you enjoy, and others will follow; It's that simple really...
*giggle giggle* it's just too easy to say, so I'm not gonna say it....aaaw hell, the only thing more ironic is YOUR post getting -1 Redundant.....BWAAHAHAHA!!! Who says mods don't have a sense of humor.
"Nothing to see here people, please move along"
While the lawyer in the article states the same point made over and over by so many experts in the field outside of SCO, to the point where it would get a redundant mod on Slashdot, the article does good job of bringing many key points home for non-lawyer types to understand. If you understand the full breadth of the SCO case you probably won't find much entertainment here however.
But all the same, SCO quit it, you're embarassing yourselves. Soon it will be beyond the hope of recovery...
I'd question that theory, granted that the article mentions that the hurricanes were over water, and being that there is less dust over water, the hurricanes would probably not use that as the source of static/lightning. The theory seems sound however and might be clsoe to an explanation perhaps?
Hmmm...with 2 mod points remaining I'm torn between modding "Funny" or "Flamebait" the latter of which to do my civic duty and get the gov's attention. How about I just reply and relieve myself of that obligation:-p
The sad part is I'd pay good money to get e-mailed a.PDF of the Los Angeles times or the Orange County Register (the local rag) that I could either print up for reading certain sections of, and/or transfer to my laptop for further reading en route to, or at the office. Alas, neither of them do this yet...they still want to drop a ton of paper at my doorstep which is inconvenient and bulky. Then they wonder why, despite numerous solicitations, why I never subscribe though I find them both enjoyable reads...
2) Downsized because of obsolete skillset and looking for a new job
3) Starting their own business (either related to IT or not), most likely resulting from #2
Seriously I'd evaluate your skillset at this time and think about where you're going from here. If you're still sharp you might find yourself pulled into management, if you're not so sharp, start thinking about your career away from your company...
The fact is this: companies love to play hardball to screw employees especially when it comes to NDAs, pre-employment agreements, and relocation packages.
