Another example a friend of mine (who works in the textile industry) told me is that when you buy garments, the higher/lower price stores ask for larger/smaller sizes is a sham, because the major factor that affects clothing prices is the time it takes to stitch/sew something together.
A child version of a jacket is going to take almost as much time to stitch as the adult size, and the difference in cost of the fabric is negligible since the manufacturer buys in bulk, and the textile not used in smaller sizes is compensated into larger sizes.
what happens is the US has this arrangement with its ECHELON partners so they spy on each other's citizens and turn over the relevant info to the interested party.
this way all the partners avoid the embarrassment of being caught spying on their own citizens because "some other country did it".
Back when I was in 'Nam (last month), the cybercafes I went to all used one or more anonymizing proxies to "free" their connections from governmental filters.
Incidentally, while I was able to surf the net unimpeded, this also prevented me from commenting on slashdot...
[Mary Baker] Eddy [founder of The Christian Science Monitor]insisted, against strong opposition from some of her advisers and church officers, that the words "Christian Science" should be in the paper's name. According to one of her biographers, Robert Peel, to Eddy, "the designated title was an identification of the paper with the promise that no human situation was beyond healing or rectification if approached with sufficient understanding of man's God-given potentialities. Nor did the "good news" of Christianity involve the prettification of bad news, but rather, its confident confrontation".
There's more information on that page, but in the interest of brevity, I only copy pasted the relevant part of the FAQ.
I don't think I want to see porn in high definition. Seeing all the blemishes, pimples, and imperfections will detract, not enhance, the experience.
I disagree.
The "home-made" segment of that industry has become very popular in the face of plastic-surgerized actresses and actors to make them look "more perfect".
Hopefully this is what will also result in cheaper massmarket HD camcorders, for, uh, home use. And stuff.
if it's so obvious, why is it hard to prove in court?
if i was working for the suer, i'd argue that creating p2p software is like writing a virus... while the virus maker is not necessarily the person who distributes it, he is still liable for the damages caused.
but if i was working for the sued, i'd argue that Microsoft does not get sued for crimes committed by people using Windows as a facilitating tool.
If I go on a trip, I want to minimize the amount of stuff I have to lug around... and when I'm on vacation, I don't want to carry a laptop around just so I can dump my footage.
Gimme at least 120gb and then I'll start being interested.
In africa, you have some of the tallest tribes in the world in close proximity to some of the shortest. The difference in their environments is not the heat -- the heat is constant -- but rather the humidity. In areas where the humidity is high, being larger does you no good. Sweat won't evaporate so the extra surface area isn't useful.
This sounds dubious. I'd argue in favor of nutrition.
Different tribes may have different diets which could account for the growth differential.
Look at Japan. The older generation is smaller than the current one, because the younger generation is better fed than the previous ones.
You can also observe this in the richer, coastal large cities of Mainland China.
nah, i just want to be able to transfer uncompressed video from my minidv camera to the iPod's HDD, and possibly playing it back on a tv set from the iPod.
magine a Siamese with a pleasant disposition! Maybe they could splice in some dog genes to get a cat that wags it's tail and plays fetch.
I had a Siamese cat a few years ago that acted pretty much like a dog. He'd fetch balls of crumpled paper for me, and he had quite a pleasant disposition too. He didn't wag his tail though. To catch my attention, he'd run around the house for momentum, then jump onto the back rest of a sofa, grip it with his front claws, then release.
When I saw him fly and spin across the room, I knew he wanted out.
they might as well add that "glow in the dark" gene they put in fish
May I point out that those fish don't produce any light by themselves?
From glofish.com: Nighttime Viewing - In cases where the room is completely dark, a black light will create the appearance that the fish are glowing in the dark. This is a truly stunning and beautiful way to display your ornamental fish at night! But please remember that the black light will only be helpful in a completely dark room. Using a black light during the daytime will not result in the fish demonstrating its true beauty.
Was the Principal specifically searching for you, or for piercings?

Leave it to slashdot to have someone insert a Monty Python and the Holy Grail in an Indiana Jones thread...
I didnt think much about it, but it certainly pissed me off that I was unable to comment on /. during my vacation.

I think it would be neat if we all pulled together and made a Slashdot-theme mod for HL2...

I'm thinking about exploring the Spyware Writer Removal Service niche instead...
your comment reminded me of the following line from Fight Club:
On a long enough timeline everyone's survival rate drops to zero.

I was reading the Sexy Losers webcomic way before I started reading Penny Arcade...
Oh wait, a gaming webcomic?

but IANAL, so...
the fact that a woman is writing it is proof in itself that SCO faked it.

IMO any money scammed from scammers should go into a fund to raise awareness about these scams... or some other pertinent beneficial goal.
Wouldn't you prefer that we send Parizeau south of the border instead?
^_^
Computer superclusters don't even have O-rings

[didn't RTFA]
I only work from my computer screen.
Someone wants a hardcopy? I email it to them. "It's faster this way, don't you think?"
Fax request? I use a fax-modem.
I love passing the printing buck to someone else.

maybe Steve Jobs revised his philosophy, and now he believes his company can make a device that does more than one thing very well?
Cmon, Steve, where's the video iPod?
