  1. It sounds like a good time to take our technology sector back in the US. Good riddance Huawei!! Go spy on Russia instead!

  2. Old retailers on Sears, the 125-Year-Old Iconic Retailer, Has 24 Hours To Survive (cnbc.com) · · Score: 1

It is just the old retailers mentality. They still want physical stores to rule the roost. Just take a look at Boscov's (one of the financially 'healthy' retailers).... They couldn't be more confused... Physical stores vs Internet - https://www.readingeagle.com/m... . This article is about Cyber Monday... and yet all they can think about is their physical stores.

  3. Microsoft never really wanted to be in the browser business anyway. They have always preferred more application 'lock in" via web services. I guess the browser wars are officially over?

  4. The American Way is to hire foreign workers to do this work. Oh by the way, these foreign workers aren't getting paid well and endure harsh labor practices. For this reason, I also do not recommend Computer Science to anyone going to college. It is simply not worth the time and money.

In ecommerce vernacular, this is a 'good problem' to have. In essence either they didn't plan properly for the load or the promotion is just super successful and exceeded expectations. The whole premise is to drive traffic to your website, and they got it in spades.

Apple should have learned here the same lesson as they did with the original Apple TV. The cost of entry has to be low enough to get more of these devices into people's hands. The HomePod esentially is an expensive stereo system. If you are on the market for a Bose or Sonos, this is for you.

  8. Re:Great! on Trump Administration Cracks Down On H-1B Visa Abuse (cnn.com) · · Score: 4, Interesting

I completely disagree. When I had to look for a new job a few years back I found that most all jobs are contract jobs for which you need to compete (and suffer) with Indian H1B workers who will work for less and many times without benefits. Rates are pretty much fixed between the employer and contracting company so that you essentially lose PTO, company provided healthcare options, 401k matching, Stock benefits etc. Also consider the H1B visa holder is beholden to the company that sponsors them and must pretty much do anything they want or need. I found that the market is absolutely flooded with H1Bs and its saturated. So now that contracted positions have become the 'new normal' (just check the job boards such as Indeed etc), American technology workers are thrown into the same churn of contracting jobs along with H1Bs. Your best and only hope is to be picked up as a full time employee (as some time of the companies choosing). 'Contract to hire' means pretty much nothing as well as companies don't really need to oblige. Also the normal tactic of most companies is to hire you full time for a salary minus any costs of PTO, Health Benefits, and 401k. This is where salary negotiation essentially falls apart. Overall, this is a crusher to the American technology worker. I know one would argue the cream will rise to the top, etc etc... but its about money. There is no cream rising anywhere for these companies. The American worker is pretty much screwed with few alternatives here. The H1B visa holder at least can go back to their country and have made a good bit of money relative to their currencies and obtain higher statuses. If were were to go crazy and not cap the H1B, I believe technology work in the US would cease for Americans. You would be better off looking at any other industry which pays benefits such as PTO, Health Benefits, and 401k to its employees. And recommending a Computer Science degree to young people? Forget it!!!

  14. Its interesting that an Open Source API Apache Struts (likely a few jar files in a web application) caused this issue. Good old reliable and free Apache Struts. This isn't a simple run patch.exe and all is good scenario by some admin. You'd have to update the jars to the fixed apache versions (hopefully these exist), retest everything in the app, and rerelease it to production.

  15. IT Labor Market on Accenture To Create 15,000 Jobs In US (reuters.com) · · Score: 1

After working as a developer for 20 years, the company I had worked for "shifted focus" on new endeavors, so I had to find a new job. Most all jobs posted today are through some contracting company. I ended up having to "prove my value" for about 8 months until they hired me. As a contractor, I made about the same money, minus benefits, and paid time off, and no 401k. Very risky for a person to go through this, even if they are good at what they do. In the end it all worked out... but honestly... they should have just given me a job with benefits and PTOs. The labor market for IT is just brutal.

  19. This is wrong in so many ways. I have seen very skilled people leads, architects, etc layed off to be replaced either by HB1 visa or complete offshoring. Its not a matter of skills, its a matter of money.

  20. This is great news for Nintendo. The marriage of Pokémon to Virtual Reality is a good one which makes this 'work'. They always had VR card games which came with the DS.... but to put this on cell phones which everyone has and combine it with GPS with Pokémon. While VR games and GPS has come before it, undoubtedly, like it or not, this ushers in a new style of gameplay, with lots of possibilities.
