I used to be production Slave ^H^H^H^H^H Support, and it blew, overtime up the wazoo, but working 70 + hours a week. I've since moved to a devlopment lab and work 4x10's by choice with Mondays off, and I turn off my cell phone after 6:00 pm every day. There are nice corporate positions but it took me 10 years to get here. The key is to have a wide variety of skills. I've worked mainframe - VM, MVS, DOS/VSE, minicomputer support - SUN, AIX, and NCR/Teradata, Tandem, Unisys, and VMS, as well as network router ops. There are lots of people out there that know as much as I do about any one thing but I got my job by doing many things. Oh and BTW 6 weeks vacation is a very possible thing if you negotiate well...
a little more depth to Wil than I've given him credit for. I almost feel bad for aome of the things I've said, but then I flash back to shope Next Generation episodes and I want Wesley DEAD:) Sorry Wil......
"Microsoft can't afford to have the media companies not make their content available on Microsoft platforms, and they will do what they can to accommodate them."
I think it is the other way around. No media company can afford to offend M$. There are lots of media producing companies, and about 5 real OS manufacturers. M$ has the BIG stick in this case not intel or amd or any computer or software manufacturer.
you just don't play them on a net connected device...My mp3 machine is on a lan only connect. I stream all over the place internally but NO ONE from the outside gets in. A good firewall is a requirement these days. It is even worth getting a pro to configure it correctly.
"Understand, this is neither a good nor a bad thing in the moral/ethical sense. In the world of business, there is no right and wrong in the moral sense, only "right" as in following the law and making money."
In a 'world of business' ?!?! where does that world exist ? Oh yeah RIGHT HERE WITH THE REAL WORLD, and all the REAL PEOPLE, with MORALS and ETHICS, or a lack of them. That kind of rationalization makes me ill. Defective people put profit over lives. There is plenty of room to make a 'comfortable' living without raping the land and degrading the people that live there. The corporations have gotten so pervasive, even the schools are now teaching profit thought.
there's the key..the real reason is NOT to catch people, anymore than the border guards real job is to stop illegal immigration. Both groups exist soley to expand the government and provide additional tax dollars. The governments purpose has become its continued existence and expansion. Frank Herbert covered it well in Dune. Where is Hari Seldon when we really need him ?
true but a massive customer base swings a great deal of weight in itself. It may well fall apart, the EU is bigger and more complex I think than the US ever thought to be...More history of diversity I think but we can only wait and see.
what part of the statement is untrue...Many of the Europian governments are noticeably more socialistic....Not a complaint just an obervation. If that has any impact on the EU's overall economic weight I don't know but I am confused by your reference and direction ? perhaps you'd like to splain some more ?
forgery or serial number modification ? It would seem a potentialy profitable area, or just for shits and giggles would it be illegal to manufacture devices which respoond and broadcast bogus data to the system IF you never tried to cross a bridge for free ?? If you can't beat the system, flood it with crap...Imagine the perplexed look on the faces of the traffic people when the system reports gridlock numbers on I880 and traffic is flowing smoothly, or as smoothly as it ever does:) Imagine if there were 50 cars out there broadcasting the same number all over the state at the same time at different speeds.
Man the financial world is a dark and dismal place, I think I should invest in some land in a nice quiet place and pay some one to farm it for me organically. Every other measure of value has become flaky, but FOOD will always have a market:) Anyone for an organic coop in say New Zealand or Roratango:)
there can't be alot of power, heck sometimes they don't even register on the bridge...hence the phantom $4 CHARGES. Until the tracking devices are as ubiquitious as telephone poles or streetlights you've little to worry about.
I'd have to say the economic future for the EU is getting better. They will wield a massive economic interest in a corporate world run on profit. With the socialist government point of view and a united front, look out world. This will NOT be good for NON EU'ers, and MAY not be good for some EU'ers, but the days of them being an economic non-entity are coming to a close. The definition of super-power has shifted, and the lines of power have blurred. Soon ecomonic entities will be the true super-powers, and nationalist entities will be consumer, or if you are lucky customer bases to be exploited/tapped.
People do it all the time, it just takes a simple disclaimer, the opinions expressed are that of the author and not that of his employer. Unless I miss my guess I've seen THAT wording used HERE before. It is too bad but speaking of bad publicity, this in my mind makes them as guilty as any defendent claiming the 5th amendment. If you can't speak for fear of incriminating yourself does that NOT imply you are guilty ??? Granted the liable laws in Europe are much stiffer so there may be circumstances I am not aware of....
because the EU, GB, and Australia are all gonna honor the DMCA in accordance with international treaty. If you happen to live in a country with cojones, I'm jealous, I wish I did too, but for the rest of us, violating this law ensures you'll be looking over your shoulder for a long time or not traveling:(
well this is BS, we can't pay with a credit card but we can happily finance F'n paypal. Sorry LWN guess you aren't getting a donation.I refuse to use paypal, after thye locked my account for 5 weeks because of a paperwork error and their side. They refused to even respond until they finished their internal investigation, in the meantime they held my money, the purchase I was trying to make went south and the one of a kind item was sold, and then PAYPAL admitted their mistake and gave me my money back with out even so much as an apology.
PAY PAL is run by idiots who make a buck freezing accounts with NO recourse.

clockless cpu's. We're about to hit a wall anyways somewhere above 2.3 Ghz in which more of the CPU cycles will be spent tracking cpu cyles than actually getting work done. I'd say a basic design change is due. I've read several articles on/. over the past 2 years regarding the technology, but I've yet to see anything I could ID as a device using the tech ni the consumer market.
yes but that 119k was from 1 state, 3 COUNTIES ONLY, and the election was decided by 537 votes ?!?! No matter how you rationalize it the problem there stinks and it allowed the courts to decide the election. I can't argue it WASN't becuse they voters were idiots at all, but that is a HUGE portion of the voting public in those areas, and when that many people get things wrong, it is a symptom of an underlying issue. I think many of them had pre voted ballots, and the lousy design ensured that many of the ballots fell apart before these people got to the voting box. I agree with you on taxes..there are MANY valid reasons to pay them, but I want to see financial responsibility and accountability....okie pipe dream over I will go back to work for the man now..thanks for the diversion......Archie
NO the Aussie's are the ones with their heads on correctly here. It us damn'd Yanks and our farked up government that is MOST CERTAINLY in the wrong here.
I was just in an argument with a very smart mathmetician and long after he lost me in proofs he deigned to lower himself and explain to me what he actually meant. From what I understand it boils down to this...
Time is not a dimension, as it is merely an expresion of the relative speed of movement.
Now I am not sure if that makes any sense in reality but my heads hurts to much to keep thinking about it.
LOL there was a huge amount of voter say in the last presidential election. 119,000 disqualified voters, an election decided by the courts ? I'd say we are approaching the point of taxation without 'adequate' representation.
USA, government by the hypocrites, for the idiots.

LOL, this is for grandma and the aunts and uncles. The GF gets IE6 and Win98. Ensures she needs help quite often and then you get to be the hero :)
