again, I don't MEAN TEXTBOOKS. They are issued every year and change alot. What I am refering to is the research books. Now most schools have a few stations set to access in the library area, but if you do away with all the books you are gonna need access ponits for ALOT more students, VPN so they can work from the dorm, or off campus vs 1000 students in the lab or library. It HAS been a while since I was at University so things may have changed but I don't think they are erally set up to support all that access.
there are still tons of information that is correct but has not changed in a few years that is NOT available via the web, and not likely to become so due to legal ramifications. As to the cost of the access I disagree, but I've no figures to support it so I will just sit back and watch. I am not saying student text books could not be electronic, what I debate is the fact that the depth of a library can currently or anytime soon be replaced by the net.
Man it must be nice being omnipotent. There are numerous reasons for this, maybe it was just one of the 20% of M$ boxes that improperly install for no apparent reason. Personally I kind of like WIN2k (*ducks*), but there are loads of issues that can cause the system to be very unstable, from OEM patch problems, to software driver incompatabilities, to of course as you mentioned an Ignoranus running the machine. I've seen disk rom cause XP to fail when trying to write a full buffer, which took more than 2 months to surface, and many hours of tracking down.
for research documentation. There may be lots of info on the net but half of it is outdated, and a quarter of the rest is just plain wrong. Unless they are going to sport subscriptions for everyone to one of the big DB companies this is going to erally hurt researchers...

The additional maitenance cost on a win2k box and the additional time ensures our sysadmins have 25 windows boxes or 75 various Unix boxes and they can keep up with either. I hardly beleive the cost of the initial equipment outweighs the long term support costs, and M$ support is VERY POOR, compared to a service contract from SUN or IBM. I KNOW THIS FOR A FACT, I've been a NCR ADMIN, SOLARIS, AIX, MS, and Linux for the same company.

More power to ya, But I DO spend about 200$ a month on Books. I LOVE BOOKS, and I will never read a book online that I am NOT FORCED TO. Work may require the use of the CRAPPY PDF format but given the slightest bit of choice I would rather claw my eyes out than be forced to read a pdf. I spend hours on my PC playing games and working, why would I want to be locked there to read a book. No smell, no texture, it just is NOT the same thing. I( am whining and I have no intention of switching. If the market pushes that way I will just stop my monthly purchases, the book of the month club, the science fiction book club, etc. Somehow I doubt the publishing industry is going to rush to web-ify everything considering the track record of companies on the net ACTUALLY making money.
If only we could find some way to provide some stats to prove this. I agree with you but as long as the MPAA can produce billion dollar figures out of their A$$, who's gonna get media coverage and political lovin ?
LOL, by the time you got done explaining the situation to them you'd be eligible for retirement and the cop would have had a double by-pass from to many dognuts and too much coffee.
violating the DMCA. I am sure some asshat lawyer will state that the installer encoding was there to prevent unauthorized installation and viewing of their precious intelectual property.
you only HAVE to be a lawyer to go to patent court. You can represent yourself everywhere else. Although doing so is foolish, emotional attachment ruins objectivity.
what do you need bigger upload on a cable modem for ? they won't let you run any kind of server. It is a bit steep, considering astound offers 1.5mb each way on a fiber connect for 40$ a month, and it's cheaper if you get phone and cable from them as well.
I can't ever recall not getting my mail:) Would it be worse if the Post Office controlled the domains and routing than it is now ? The various groups we've appointed to safegaurd the net have for the most part been corporatized, or lobotamized by the real power, $$$$$.
We get this in the grocer's all the time, and funny but almost all of the 'sales' people are little old lady looking people, " Here sonny try a bit of this processed crap...."

doing mandating market acceptance of a new product or technology anyways ? Our government is certifiable. They've accepted the corporate rational that they have a right to the money in our pocket, and if they aren't getting it, then somthing must be wrong and the government should pass some laws ensuring the continued flow of cash from our pockets to theirs.
but why bother ? To see the crap served up on TV twice as clear, it just makes it suck worse, Rose colored glasses and all. Maybe if any of the networks could rise to the challenge and consistently produce high quality programming I might care

they will just use the drop in revenue to further mislead our moronic elected officials as to how much $$ they are losing because of horrible evil p2p and music pirates.
But lets face it, if their revenue doubled they'd still complain that they were losing money. Nonthing short of absolute control is going to make Hillary happy:(
