I worked for major financial institution for a long time and found that the salary budget was very limited but that they would, and could negotiate time off without adding to the budget. Before I left I had 5 weeks of vacation and they had a program that allowed employees to pay for an week off by setting aside a small amount of money from each pay check leaving me with 6 weeks of paid vacation each year plus my sick leave which I used all of as genuine sick days or spontaneous mental days. As others have mentioned I viewed it all as part of my compensation package. Most of my co-workers had 3 weeks vacation.
These kinds of ships spend almost their entire voyage on "auto pilot" now, and they require a local pilot and tug to navigate into harbor. With the lack of personnel I'd bet insurance rates go down in case of piracy, the need for food and crew space goes away and can be used for more cargo. The ships will still be met and guided into any harbor by the same system we use now.

Someone needs to upload and tag this guy in a photo and some where, somehow he will get tagged, bagged and hung out to dry. Once he is located, and the info gets out his days will be numbered, and I'd bet the number will be less than 50 million.
You have a legal right to refuse to provide a password under your 5th amendment rights. Purposefully wiping the drive would get you an obstruction of justice charge. You can refuse to speak but lying is a crime. When in doubt just do nothing.
The US government has already proven and the courts agreed that a finger print can be compelled. I'd like to use a combination of facial recognition, a finger print and a password, and maybe even a physical device. A voice recognition option would be an effective addition as well. Any less and you might as well just not use any security at all.

I had a snafu in which I forgot to pay Dish one month, I was away on a contract, and my GF noted that they had turned off the service, BUT we still had access to all the shopping and junk for sale channels, as well as they pay per view stations.
Who tracks the source of funds for super PAC's. What is to stop a foreign entity from incorporating and then donating to or utilizing a Super PAC as a front ?
It is and has been happening to the west for sometime. State sponsored hacker groups originating from government owned facilities in China, Russia, Iran and Syria have been hacking at US installations and infrastructure for years now. It won't start a world war it will just up the ante in the ongoing cyber war that has taken the place of the cold war. Foreign entities need to know that the west is willing and able to defend itself in the cyber world as well as the 'real' world.
What the US needs to do is get together with the UK and a couple of other allies and create an effective 'hacker' team and ddos the crap out of the palace in Beijing. After which we could do the same to the Kremlin, and maybe the entire country of Syria. It is time we started fighting on the third front in the virtual world, We have the technology, we have the personnel and we certainly have cause.
What I don't trust is the programmer who decides what to do with the computer or the management who decides what the programmers should do. The end result will always be the most profitable lowest common denominator trash. Hardware has always been my passion, whether auto (mechanical) or computer it ALWAYS does what you tell it to do, even it is not the right thing.
Note : I've never had a Facebook or Twitter account, and never had any online social account in my real name. If they want me to pay to opt out, will they pay me to NOT open up accounts on variations of my name with false information. Will I get reimbursed for not tagging photos with false names ? I wish I could make a mask of myself, and then have 2 dozen people where it around in areas with facial recognition software. It would be really cool to be at 3 airports, 2 courthouses, a public protest and several other places all simultaneously.
You can delete a message or recall an email, but you can't ever get rid of the account and all the data they have on you and will continue to collect, aggregate, and market.

They can't deal with a bank as that is a federal entity and in the US despite state legalization the feds still call it illegal and any FDIC insured institution risks running afoul of federal regulation and fines. So who is going to buy me a smart phone, and pay for a data plan ? I don't have one and I don't want one. My simple dumb Trac phone with just text and phone service is cheap easy and my choice. I have a visa/debit card that I keep for emergency use only, and I have to remind myself to use it for an inquiry once every 90 days or the damn credit union suspends it. As a contractor I am paid by certified check thru my contracting office rather than by the current employer. I use and cash for almost everything except monthly bills which are paid out of my checking account via automatic withdrawal. Does my dope dealer have to pay square or some vendor to stay in business ? How do I give the 'vet' hanging out on the corner a couple of bucks for hamburger evey now and then. Uncle Sam is up in my grill enough with having every dollar I choose to spend analyzed by them.
How so ? They are not going to let the kid go anywhere, emergency or not without a guardian arranging it thru the school. They are not going to let even the guardian just show up at the school and take the child without checking in at the office. I am all for everyone having a phone or some means to reach emergency services etc. I see the kid getting an emergency message and jumping up and running to the office or just failing let anyone know what is going on causing far more impact as the campus is locked down, because the kid left without telling anyone anything. Having the teacher pause briefly to answer the class intercom and sending the child to the office would be far less disturbing than the child running out of class unexplained and much quicker than the child having to try and explain to the teacher, and then again to central office personnel.
