Yes, yes, surround is all nice and flashy, but not for real acoustic recordings. Chesky and other high end labels didn't modify the 5.1 standard to L+R front, rear and height channels just for the heck of it.
That being said I think if any difference can be heard between 16 and 24 bit it will be incredibly subtle. It's even less than the difference between converting to Ogg Vorbis quality 7 and 10, the only difference I've heard is a slightly lesser defined acoustic environment at q7, q10 being equal to that of the cd.
That'll have to be it then, except I move my laptops quite a lot, from room to room, also I change position on chair, couch, etc constantly while the disks are read/written to so I don't think any of them really park the heads at that time.
And so far no problem with defective drives, apart from a few in statoinary pc's.
I hope DAHDI is better supported this time. I had a lot of trouble getting it to work under a plain (Ubuntu server) installation as it involved modifying settings that weren't really documented.:-/
I reverted to using the AsteriskNOW installation and even that needed a manual change to one of the config files for it to recognise two FXS channels...
We're not a big company at all, but I'm looking at implementing Linux servers for the small businesses in this area.
One of the main reasons is they primarily need central storage and backup, and often get by with using a simple mailbox without the Exchange/Outlook features.
For our own use I've set up one Nagios server for business contracts and one Samba server for use in the unsafe network area (repairing PCs, often infected by malware).
For this thing to become more than a complementary device it needs some future technology.
I've been thinking about an ideal device like this but then it would have to be made from thin flexible material to prevent breaking it in two and the size should be about two A4 pages. With high enough resolution it doesn't have to be a continous screen.
Given the current state of technology such a device might just be available in another ten years or so.
Well, [stereotype mode]you could call your local Republican or Democratic party organizers, or ask the secretaries of famous TV evangelists[/stereotype mode].
Just don't mention anything about "do as I say, not do as I do.".
I've been running Ubuntu for a couple of years now because like you I got a new laptop with some hardware not supported by FreeBSD.
In that time I've seen apt do just as much damage as ports could do. Nothing that couldn't be fixed manually, but I wouldn't call it ridiculously good (unless the definition for "good" has a wide range).
If anything I prefer ports because I can still get XMMS out of it (there just isn't a better player/interface) while the Ubuntu repository has dumped it a long time ago.
Why would anyone purchase a creative commons movie?
There are people who are willing to pay for something that they enjoy, whether it's commercial or free.
I've gotten a lot of pirated stuff over the years but I also buy the movies/music/games/software/etc. that I like and it being freely available makes no difference.
Besides, wouldn't you want to give them the extra incentive to create even more movies?
Sure automatics allow for fuel savings..
Really? I've only known them to be slightly higher in fuel consumption because of the powerloss in the hydraulic converter.
Yes automatics shift faster, which is useful in competition.
That wasn't the case when (I believe) Top Gear mentioned a test between a new Porsche automatic gearbox and a manual. The manual did better on the track, although the cars had been driven by a professional ofcourse. Regular punters will skew the results.;-)
That's the same thought I had when I saw the pictures. The reason it works is because the sun gear provides the counterforce to get the planet gears in motion.
If there's a load on the planet gears it'll push back against both ring gear and sun gear, meaning the drive force on those will have to be equal. No use having a weak motor driving the sun gear.
Just have a look at how an automatic gearbox works. (I already learned about those over 20 years ago when I was taught about cars instead of computers)
If not healthier, it makes me feel better at the end of the day.
I tend to get up and walk over to coworkers instead of messenging/calling them, sometimes print on the printer one floor up just to have an excuse to walk up and down the stairs. I take any good reason to get away from the desk for a few minutes because I can really feel the difference when I've been stuck in the chair for a couple of hours.
I see that not so much as a problem for actual literature (in which I usually don't have to search back), but more of a problem with scientific texts.
In these books I tend to go forward and back a lot more checking references.
So unless someone comes up with a quick way of scrolling I wouldn't use ebook readers for anything other than normal story books.
I agree with a book being the ideal form factor. It's easier to hold a book with one hand than a laptop.
One version could even provide a real keyboard split in two on the bottom of each side, no stylus typing or touchscreens needed.
The scifi anime series Ergo Proxy also features a book style handheld wiith the ability to flip and rotate holographic(?) pages. Best version I've seen so far.
I can relate to that, management at my previous job was very happy that I and a coworker were single and easily available for stepping in on the usual holidays.
When I had to cut back because I spent a couple of years doing nothing but work, day in day out, (special project) and went back to a normal 8 hours a day the whole attitude of management turned around. All of a sudden I was a troublemaker, eventually fired (although they couldn't do it without compensation) and now I'll just take my time looking for a new employer. Someone who appreciates extra effort and has no "Do as I say, not do as I do" mentality.

And no, I'm not using a standard hifi set at home.

o.O We can't have our contracts trashing all over the place, which is why we need to monitor them to make sure they behave.
I've seen the website but haven't gotten around to run a test server with it yet.
Looks very promising.

How true. For me it's the eyes that tell wether she's a nice girl or a bitch, and I'm not interested in living with a constant headache.
So, what are you saying? The horse is no more?
You expect to be sued for that by someone providing child porn?
I bet if they would just publish the sitenames the problem would be dealt with quickly enough by online vigilantes.

And topping that off I use Sandboxie with Firefox on the Windows machines.

Might be healthier in the long run
