    Yes, but the better ones won't work for free; if the game goes commercial or shareware or whatever, they'll want a cut. This program, on the other hand, is quite willing to work for a bit of electricity and some spare processor cycles. Whether it can produce music equivalent to that of a good musician\composer is another matter entirely, but this does show that it can be done.

    I know this is a troll, but I'll bite... it's really rather the opposite. The Narnia series is really more or less one big metaphor for Christian mythology, with the Lion playing the role of Christ, the Witch playing the role of Satan, and the children playing the role of the disciples (complete with one of them playing the role of Judas). The series parallels several pieces of Christian mythology in a fantasy setting, leading up to the book "The Last Battle," which is more or less the metaphor for Judgement Day.

    Besides which, some clients, such as Shareaza make use of multiple protocols (in this case, BitTorrent, EDonkey, Gnutella, and Gnutella2) in an attempt to unify those protocols. Not a bad idea, really. That said, I'm still waiting for them to add support for the WinMX networks.

    The three-item format of the title reminds me strongly of the format used by Haruki Murakami in "Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World" - every other chapter, the chapter's title would have a three-phrase structure - some examples would be "Elevator, Silence, Overweight," and "Appetite, Disappointment, Leningrad."

    So let me get this straight - you sit their watching the whole time you're downloading something? I know that I'm usually off doing something else, letting the download run in the background. You only really lose the amount of time that it takes to double-click on the file, whether it's in the ITMS or off of Kazaa.

    Perhaps Slashdot should add a link to Groklaw on the side of the main page, as it has done with certain other popular websites in the past (AnimeFu, Penny Arcade, Everything, etc.). That would make more sense, and it could replace the vacant spot left by the passing on of "The Filthy Critic."

    For "independent", read "not owned by EA or other large industry players". Indie filmmakers can have companies; they're just usually not big, well known companies, and they're willing to try innovative, even "dangerous" things to make a name for themselves. Such games are At least in spirit, I think that's what the IGF is attempting to promote here, though of course "different" doesn't mean better if the idea is poorly executed.

    Besides which, you should be able to test open source products far better than closed source products - because you can see what makes them tick and design tests accordingly.

    No, when somebody completes the problem with 64 disks, the world will end. It's an exponential-time function (big O of N^2), so doing that would take an insanely long time. I once calculated this out - assuming you could move 1 disk per second, it would take about 5 billion years, which is very roughly the predicted remaining lifespan of the sun.

    Just in case anyone's confused, no, Eternal Darkness is *not* coming out for the iQue (that anyone knows of) - that's just a very old quote from the time when ED was going to be on the N64. However, it would be interesting to see Silicon Darkness dust of the old N64 version, finish it up, and release it for the iQue - it looked quite good (graphics-wise) for an N64 game, and the old N64 demos had some levels that never made it into the finished GameCube project, including a level where you played as one of the Knights Templar.

    In their defense, it must be said that this is the sort of bug that's somewhat hard to predict... obviously the playtesters didn't have an entire year to test the game, or we'd only just now be getting it. And at least it isn't a show-stopper - only certain parts of the game stop working, not the whole thing.

    There are indexes like YoYo! and The Freedom Engine, and at least a few search programs (which are essentially filesharing services). They're not entirely reliable, true. But while it may not be worth *your* time to find items on Freenet, it is very much worth the time of people who live in countries such as China and cannot recieve uncensored information through the internet.

    May I direct you to Freenet? Strictly speaking, people are "in charge" (the developers), but the whole principle is that pretty much anything goes on Freenet - it's designed to be perfectly anonymous (when coupled with the correct browser), so material posted on Freenet can't be forced off.

    Erm... "Final Fantasy 13" doesn't exist (they've announced 12 and released 11). "Super Smash Brothers" is a relatively old N64 game - sure you don't mean Smash Bros. Melee, the 'Cube incarnation? And Project Gotham Racing is only up to installment number 2, not 4. If you do work for an electronics distributor, you *really* need to get your act together.

    Considering the number of filesharing users out there, 1,054 takers on the amnesty program is fairly pitiful, actually. What would be more interesting would be the number of people who have quietly dropped off of the networks due to the RIAA's threats... but new arrivals will probably mask any people leaving this way in terms of the overall filesharing "population."

    Of course, there may be a sort of a "last mile" problem in the US too - once you arrive at your destination, it might take almost as long or longer to make the second half of the journey from train station to final destination (because of car rentals, traffic, etc.).

    Once downloaded, the default "Image Preview" under Windows XP can't display it, either, if that's any consolation (when you try to full-size it, it just whimpers and displays "Drawing Failed").

    About that nit - that's part of the idea. Different apps can have different themes. I think they're just trying to demonstrate that fact; the poorly done themes are probably just placeholders of a sort.

    Not "Cosmos," "Contact," as everyone else on Slashdot has been quick to point out. "Cosmos" was his excellent little science-education show on public television, as well as the book that accompanied it. PBS here in the US still airs it occasionally.
