You could teach him to play pool. If you search online for "physics of pool" or something similar, you'll see a lot of different papers on how it should work. It's fun to play, and you can definitely see quick improvement after a little while (I personally enjoyed seeing progress when I was a kid).
Also, it doesn't fit in your stocking, but it could be good quality time to spend together somewhere.
The trick would now be to find a place to play pool that ISN'T a bar. Growing up, my local arcade had video games, putt-putt, and pool...I don't think there's too many places like that anymore:(
same goes for logos. I remember a friend of mine saying that he got to see the Nike sketchbook, he said the original brainstorm of "possible" logos was as thick as a bible (if the bible was printed on regular paper, not the thin paper).
as someone above posted, Republicans have been in charge for 22 of the last 30 years. You say your entire working life is 36 years, so...does that mean anything to you?
22 > 14, that means the Republicans have done more to screw your economic life than the Democrats, and you're still voting Republican...that doesn't make logical sense.
wouldn't this be a bigger deal if our votes actually counted, and there wasn't an electoral college, superdelegates, and whateverothernonsense there is?
The problem is, that teachers in many places are already underpaid, and now you want them to come in early or stay later to help kids make up for assignments that they should have completed to begin with?
something about that doesn't sound fair to me, maybe because I'm friends with a few teachers.
exactly, I have a similar problem.
My set is an older CRT that only does 480i,480p,1080i. It does NOT support 720p.
So what happens if a title is only mastered in 720p, well, it gets scaled down to 480p. Wouldn't that look the same as a progressive scan dvd player then?
This is another reason why I've been holding off.
Here's an article that describes the problem further:

I think I'll wait to see what Iron Man and The Dark Knight look like on BluRay before I decide. I'm sure the PS3s will be a little cheaper by Xmas. Also looking forward to Street Fighter IV for the PS3 (even though I don't have one yet). Once all three are out, it might be the reason for me to finally get a PS3.
This is EXACTLY the problem that I'm finding with the new iTunes "genius" feature. I have Metallica, Slipknot, DJ Shadow, Tribe Called Quest, etc in my library, but if I hit the "genius" button while I'm playing a Coldplay song, all I get is Coldplay, Radiohead, Thom Yorke (lead singer for Radiohead), and U2. There's definitely songs from the other bands that COULD fit into the mix, but it doesn't know how. If it's in my library, then, obviously I like it. Try to figure out how/when to fit it into a playlist!
Anyway, Steve, if you're reading this, I can send you my playlist and you can use it as a guinea pig if you like.:)
In NC, it's actually easy to know. The main floor plan is public record. When the next person goes to buy your house that you did a major remodel on, and the current floor plan doesn't match what they're looking at, then it's easy to figure out what happened.
When you take out proper permits, they have to be approved by an architect, and the public floor plan should have your new revision in it.
if you decide to do this, know your limitations, and the permit laws in your state. Here in NC, you need a permit for any new framing/walls, electric, plumbing, etc.
If you don't get the proper permits, you may have a hard time selling your house down the road.
I forgot to mention that by "latest" I meant the Safari 4 Dev preview. I don't know if 3.x passes ACID 3 or not.
But both Chrome and Safari 4 are in "preview" so, I still think it's a fair comparison.
However, they must be using a much older version of Webkit.
Chrome does NOT pass the ACID test 3, even though the latest Safari does. Also, Chrome still has the carpet bomb "bug" that Apple was criticized for (auto-downloads).

I think part of the deal is that it's so much faster to use current existing technology. How long have they been working on JS 4 and HTML5, and whateverelse version 6.0?
Who's going to define the API for this new thing that doesn't exist? How long will it take to make something that works as easily as what's available now? Also, these people that are making the backward hacks aren't stopping anyone else from making this new big thing that you mention, and they're not necessarily the same people that would be involved in this next big thing.
Progress isn't being hampered, so I agree, why get in a huff? The Internet is (almost) whatever you want it to be. If you want to use it as a newsreader, don't go to any interactive sites, but there shouldn't be any complaints about what everyone else is doing on the Internet.
I don't know if there's anything like this in your area, but here in Raleigh, NC there's a group that takes old "junk" and puts computers together for at-risk children, etc.

maybe there's something similar where you live? I've donated lots, and they give you a receipt for your tax records (bonus).
if he enjoys music as well, you can do a small project (that I've been meaning to do, but never have). you make make a plug-in visualizer for your favorite music/mp3 player.
from what I've seen, they can range from very simple, to very complex (open gl, etc).
The two ferries were definitely interesting. It could have gone completely wrong too. I was wondering what would have happened if someone actually DID push the button. What I mean is, did the joker only TELL them that it blew up the other boat, when in fact it would have blown up their own, or was he telling the truth? That would have been pretty a pretty interesting debate in itself. Would he blow them up for thinking that they were self-righteous?

According to the imdb.com Dark Knight trivia section:
He [Heath Ledger] was also given Alan Moore's comic "Batman: The Killing Joke" and "Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth" to read.
There's a little more to it now.
It sounds more like they're suing because they took the Leopard update, opened it up, modified files in it, and re-released it for themselves.
I think they're considering that a copyright infringement.
If you like anime at all, I'd recommend at least watching the (uncut) movie. It's great, the series...not too good.

in the end, all the work for a swoosh :)

Agreed, and apparently the 7-Election has historically only been about 1% off. currently it's Obama 60% to McCain's 40%.

or maybe a battery swap program like I do for my propane gas tank for my grill.

I read somewhere that Google finances $55M of Mozilla's $65M. I don't know where the other $10M comes from.
If money isn't a concern, have you considered looking at Peace Corps, Americorp, or the red cross for any technical job listings?
i'm sure get gain a lot of work and life experience if you've never lived outside of the US for any number of years.

MacGyver has already tested this car out, back in '88! http://www.tv.com/macgyver/collision-course/episode/47269/summary.html :)
