..."when they're nothing but petty little criminals"
I think that's exactly the reason why so many people get frustrated. There are much better things that our tax money could be going towards than putting away "smaller" criminals. i'd much rather one "small" drug dealer get put away in my town than someone who got caught for pirating software. maybe i'm wrong in my priorities...but someone needs to set them.
so...what's the news? people get ahold of these kinds of films all the time, hell...even make money off it. There's multiple sequels of both Traces of Death and Faces of Death...some are pretty disturbing actual videos, some others are re-enactments...
i think you might be able to claim it under home owner's insurance...as well as a loss on your taxes:)
depending on what kind of insurance you have, and if the prices have come down any (don't know, i still have a 5 gig), but you might be able to get an upgrade:)
I don't think that i could really compare tech support with 7-eleven guy, motel clerk, etc. reason being, that there's pretty much a fixed number of things that the customer can ask for...and you're ready for it. can i get a slurpee and gas? the customer knows what's needed, so they're not hostile. with tech support, the customer DOESN'T know what's wrong or why, so they come to you, most of the time hostile, and YOU have to make all right with the world...and sometimes, you don't even know what wrong or why, even more frustrating, no quick fix.
I'm currently running Mandrake 10 RC1 with a built-in 2.6.2-3 kernel. Running without much incident. However, it didn't pick up the video card correctly (intel i845G), but it did try to install the i810 driver, but X wasn't working, and startx would fail. If anyone else has this problem, here's how to fix it.
Add the line intel-agp
to the file/etc/moprobe.preload
don't ask me what it means, it works. Actually, i think it means it's just adding that kernel module to the boot process, but still...cryptic.
in the end...you might get better support from OS, but by the time you put something into a bug tracker like bugzilla, and it gets confirmed and they mail you back, a week could pass...easily.
don't know if anyone has posted this yet, but the usefulness of dvdxcopy is that it can split a 9gb disc into two 4.7. this comes in handy if you want to keep all extras and not do compression on the video. otherwise, definitely use dvdshrink+nero.
i remember reading a discussion board with one of the developers some time ago, and they said, even if they are forced to take out the decss code, that it's still usable, although not as friendly. they mentioned that you should still be able to use something like dvd decrypter to decrypt the disc, and then run dvdxcopy if you want to split the disc.
don't know exactly how it works, but it sounds possible.
also, with as much as the company probably paid for the sparc machines and solaris and support, you could have had a couple of backups or redundancy with the linux machines:)
i'd have to disagree and say that VB is probably one of the worst languages to start off with. Yes, it's easy...the problem is that from then on, if you get really good at VB, then you'll ALWAYS be struggling to learn a new language. Most languages i've come across that are any good have more of a C++ syntax. Once you learn C++ decently (I don't think anyone ever masters it...but hey...i'm probably wrong), then everything is a step down in difficulty. With VB, everything is stepping up...
1st choice, i'd chose c++, even if you never use it, 2nd probably java, that way you don't really have to teach pointer arithmetic (PITA) or memory management.
the only problem i have is that the "community" sounds like people that are paying to subscribe to mandrake.
if so, wouldn't you want as many possible "beta" testers as possible (ie free distro), not just to the few people that subscribe to the mandrake community?
Anyway, maybe it's just me, but that's what it sounded like. It was like "hey, you pay for your subscription to get to the stuff early...but it's buggy, once you figure out the problems, everyone else gets it free in 2-3 months."
i have to agree...all hype. i currently have cable, but my parent's house has satellite. i live in NC, and haven't had any video loss at the parent's house even during hurricane season.
the advantage that i like about cable, is that i do get a discount when they bundle it with high speed internet...and another advantage, is splitting cable.
if you have 2 tvs that you want to hook up with satellite (like my parent's house), you need 2 receivers (or 1 receiver for every tv), and then the dishnetwork charges you an extra $5/mo for the extra receiver signal (BS to me...i'm already getting the signal!)
anyway...that's why i chose cable over satellite, but i haven't had any problems with satellite, and i think with satellite you get more channels.
oh, another thing...you have to pay for network channels with satellite, if you want your local channels, which is mostly what i watch anyway.
a pretty good open source project was gnucleus...until Shareaza came along with Gnutella 2 . it can now connect to Gnutella, Gnutella 2, edonkey, and serve as a bittorrent client!
www.shareaza.com
it's free, not spy ware, no anything, however, not OS either...
well...considering there's over 1.6M downloads of this program
http://download.com.com/3000-2646-10180795.html?ta g=lst-0-1
i'd say a lot. this program is apparently used to copy and burn ps2 games.
also, look at the sales of modchips and stuff like ps2cover.com. they're not sticking around because they're NOT making money...people ARE buying this stuff...and probably a lot more than you think.
also, take a look at this. ps2 has sold over 70 million copies (http://news.zdnet.co.uk/business/0,39020645,39119 121,00.htm)...if even 1 percent of them are pirating (700,000) times say 10 games apiece (very very conservative), times about $40 per game....
$280,000,000. i don't think that number is by any means insignificant when you consider these people are SUPPOSED to be making $ from the games, not the consoles...
dont' know if anyone has mentioned this yet or not...but i think they'd like to get rid of used games and game rentals for this reason.
i now know how to burn a copy of a PS2 game, i can rent one for $4, copy and burn it on my DVD burner for $1, return it...now, i just got a game that i can play at home whenever i want, for however long i want, for just $5.
same with used games. i buy a used game, copy it, sell it back. loss is probably minimal compared to actually buying the retail game and keeping it.
I think you hit the nail on the head...

you can do all of the essentials with DVD Shrink (now writes to ISO files) and with DVD Decrypter (writes ISO files), for FREE!
I don't know if they will or not. They haven't put the smack down on Ephpod, and it's been around a long time
http://www.ephpod.com/download.shtml
Also, you can use it in Linux via wine to sync your ipod in linux
http://www.cs.duke.edu/~geha/ipod/
i actually think it's a lot easier by now...but it's possible.
they can't sue lindows.com now, it's lin--- :) they beat them to the punch!
my bad... /etc/modprobe.preload
it should require 3 previews before submitting :)

found it: http://www.seren.net/grey/grey_album/Danger_Mouse_ Grey_Album.torrent
is there a torrent file for the grey album? all of the mirrors seem to be overwhelmed...
i don't like being stuck with basketballs either!

i thought it was supposed to work FASTER the more people that were on it...like BT, am I wrong?
while i was reading it...i could have sworn he was going to say that "it's a terrible waste of space" :)
i hope the winner comes to slashdot, i'm sure your 6 people are a tad bit cheaper than $8M :)
also, with as much as the company probably paid for the sparc machines and solaris and support, you could have had a couple of backups or redundancy with the linux machines :)
according to IMDB there's also supposed to be a family guy movie...i just hope it's true http://imdb.com/title/tt0385690/
