Just talking about this to a co-worker yesterday. I hate the fact that I can't do this:
select (first_name||' '||last_name) as name
from customers
where name like 'z%'
instead i have to do this:
select (first_name||' '||last_name) as name
from candidates
where (first_name||' '||last_name) like 'z%'
even thought I JUST defined the alias! granted, i've only ever used Oracle, I don't know how other DBs handle the above.
somehow better than excel? you have not seen how feature rich Access is then. It's an excellent front end to Oracle and other databases (provided that you have the client installed). You can use QBE or write straght SQL and it'll actually work! Exporting reports to Word comes in especially handy, as do email merges, letter merges, etc.
I agree on some points. I work for a very small company, and all of the execs travel very often. When this happens, they're just simply not around often enough to see what could be improved, or what costs too much money.
When this happens, and the "grunts" have a better idea of what needs fixing than the management, then you gotta do what you gotta do...that might be the kind of situation the poster is in.
this will make file checking just take that much longer. have you done md5 sums on iso files...for say, a linux distro? it takes awhile, even on a p4 3ghz with 1 gb of ram.
but now you want to do it twice (2 diff algos)?
ninjas are the bad guys...samurai are the good guys. ninjas could probably get the halo 2 leak out and NEVER get caught, it's be like "what ninja!," they're so sneaky...
"...And that means a likely R rating for Doom."
I'm not quite sure why this he's even questioning this. I hope there isn't some terrible editing going on and that it'll just turn out to be AVP 2005 with the whole PG13 rating.
one of the things that helped my frame rates was uncompressing the pk4 files into the base directory. i got about an extra 10 fps and increased load time significantly. I haven't tried this in linux yet, but it definitely works in windows.
PS: If you like the theme song, i think it's in the 003.pk4 file, d3theme.ogg
Yes, Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) has always been a big id fan and id's been a big fan of his. He was originally scheduled to do the soundtrack for doom 3 like he did for Quake, but it fell through somehow. It looks like he was able to get a lot of work done on it though. Since then, Chris Vrenna(?) has done the sound. He also did the sound for ALICE and used to be a member of Nine Inch Nails. He now has his own band Tweaker.
if you have a complaint on sound effects you might try to download the Trent Reznor sound effects. I believe they are the sounds from the leaked alpha, but you can use the pk4 file from that and put it in the full build and use those sound effects instead of the new ones. There were a couple of gaming sites hosting these files, but I don't remember which.
Apparently the install doesn't like your computer if you have either CloneCD or Alcohol installed. I never had alcohol installed, but it wasn't giving me problems running the game. I uninstalled CloneCD and everything's fine.
I hope the first patch they come out with gets rid of this crap. The "warez" version has been available for days, so it's already out...there's nothing to stop now:)
Yes, the next "id" game will actually not be from id. Raven Software is working on Quake IV with a tweaked Doom 3 engine, that should probably be out next year sometime. Raven has done a lot of great things with the id engines. I think Heretic and Hexen both used the doom/doom2 engine, and Heretic 2 used the quake or quake2 engine, and all those games looked much better than the id games with the same engines, i can't wait!
i would definitely try to hack the firmware if I had the chance...the trick is to do it as soon as you get it, if you screw it up, take it back. the problem is that, even though i'm saving $500, i still don't want to spend $900 on a digital camera, especially if i can get an 8MP for $1000. I guess there must be some features that are different, but camera prices come down extremely fast.
there was plenty in the Raleigh area, atleast in RTP. i got a couple of friends to do the 'look up the bottle' trick and we all won every time...whoops...maybe that's where all the bottles went:) i even ended up giving a few tracks away to people who hadn't used iTunes yet.
So, hopefully they had already asked him about this.
I think the cost of producing a CD is far less than that of producing a movie...
"What is your password?"
"Big Boy"
"Please repeat."
"Big Boy!!"
If you have a PS2, I would highly recommend the SSX series (snowboarding). It's incredibly addicting and easy to learn.

What concerns me is that people that spell like this :
:)
--
I don't care if he kills police oficers.
...
But he may never, over my dead body, have adult on adult, consensual sex!

have children...
I think it was Mortal Kombat (arcade) that said: "Winner stays...loser pays"

Good luck doing an update query in Excel...
that's funny
when I read
"Well, I say everytime we find a dupe..."
I thought it was going to be followed by..."an angel gets his wings."

maybe this one will have demons from hell in it :)

i don't know why everyone is freaking out about the 5.1, believe me a dark room and headphones will do wonders to scare the crap out of you.

around hour 6, you could have used DVDShrink and rip the movie to an iso image, and just burn it later :)

can you even get a lan firewall to work on dial-up? i don't think it would do the author much good...
