And Douglas Adams always thought of Last Chance to See as his best and favourite work.

I have heard rumours of a proposed TV follow up with Stephen Fry joining Mark Carwardine, and after Stephen's "spectacled bears" adventures I think that would be a great idea.

Sadly though, Mark recently said that the baiji dolphin was believed extinct, and the northern white rhino is almost gone too.

The big kakapo parrot is doing OK though.

  5. My new drivers licence on Credit card signatures: Useless? · · Score: 1

My new NJ driver's licence has my signature scanned onto it (50% size), underneath the laminate. Would there be any benefit in the credit card companies requiring same? Obviously this would increase production costs of the cards to some degree, but might the idea have some merit, especially if merchants then REQUIRED both the photo ID and card and this could be enforced somehow.

Funnily enough the precise reason I bought my MP3 player was to listen to quality radio programming from the BBC. I'm not into music that much, and far more interested in comedy and documentaries, which the BBC have in abundance on Radio2,4 and 7. Now I live in the States I'm actually listening to MORE radio than I ever did - all of it British - thank heavens for my stream-recording software. BBC's ListenAgain feature is wonderful.

I'm using YourMusic.com from BMG at the moment for adding to CD collection. $5.99 per CD, free shipping. I don't know how they make any money, really I don't. Seems like a steal to me. You set up a monthly queue a bit like the NetFlix model, but you can get as many CDs as you like at that same price. Double albums run $11.98. I'm very happy with it so far. I'm still not into this burning of downloaded albums. Too much of an arse about. Give me a shiny factory pressed CD and booklet any day of the week.

The CDs you had were the Cd-Rom version of the book, including lots of photographs and Douglas Adams READING his book (an augmented audiobook essentially). It's actually out there on the web as a free download, (whether or not it SHOULD be is another question), but its there, and doesn't take long to find with a good Google. The actual radio series was a documentary style narrative from the field, with voice over from the late great Peter "The Book" Jones. Rare to hear any of it. Although "Douglas Adams at the BBC", a CD audio release from last year does have a lot of segments from it. If you'd like to send me some Amazon Associate pocket money, the CD set is available from my site's sidebar...

It was actually a radio crew. Still a shame the radio series has never been released commercially - would make sense if you could divert the profits to the programmes designed to save the Kakapo, Mountain Gorilla, and the last 20 Northern White Rhinos etc. Less than 10 wild NW Rhinos left these days. Just like Slashdot really..... and yet here we are.

Slashdot is gathering "stuff that matters" for us, saving us the trouble. I don't see anything wrong with that. Blogs that perform a service like that (and like mine -- http://anotherchancetosee.blogspot.com/) gather news and articles about particular topics that are valuable to people because they save us time. They bring things to our attention that we would normally have to hunt a bit harder for.

The angst ridden personal blogs I'm happy to avoid, and like most, wish Google had a mechanism for excluding them easily.
