One word: security. If you wanted to connect to your home computer you have to set it up so it can accept your connection and that isn't a simple task because of the security implications it has.
Isn't multiplication tables what matters, the important thing is the process and the exercise. That helps them develop their memory and gives them a very basic case of a mathematical problem, its rules and solution.
What most people miss when thinking about the contents of education is that the content are not always the important part, sometimes the contents are just a mean to an end which is to develop some skill.
What I find harder and harder to understand is why with all the different life forms on this planet only one developed what we call 'intelligence'. If it's such and advantage why isn't it more widespread? What makes our biological structure so particular that only in us this trait has developed?
What you miss there is that NSA is part of the government and they're not telling you what they're doing; instead Google is a corporation, its goal is to make a profit, not protect the people; Google states clearly what they're doing and nobody forces you to use gmail in the first place. With Gmail it's your choice with NSA your choice would be to move someplace else.
Terror have already won on your land. You live with it, you create it everyday and your government use your terror to do whatever they can't do by other means. Sad but not much surprinsing.
I just can't believe your are living like this. I can't believe that, not only you are so afraid of everything that are willing to kill somebody just because it could be wearing some dangerous device; do you see that word "could" there, it means you could be wrong also and kill an innocent girl, now think about it, what are the odds that she is wearing something so dangerous that you need to kill her to avoid something worse?
And now I can't believe there are some of you that says thigns like that. I mean, I can understand some police officer react like that, their brains are dumbed down to act like that. But some common people seeing this and saying it's ok.
I want to see where are you gonna end up with your new panic way of life. You like being tasered for staying late at night at the library, for asking questions too much, being arrested for wearing strange clothing, halting a city 'cause some creative made an strange looking marketing... I really want to see how much your society can hold and what comes when it breaks apart
You just can't make an analogy from something phisical to something virtual (I know the word isn't quite right but I can't find a better one) that easy.
The farmer has the right to have the carrot but that also implies that no one else can have that carrot because it's a phisical object.
In the case of music, the musician/composer can have the fruit of their labor which is the final recording. But, and this is a very big but, that doesn't imply that someone else can't also have the music because creating an exact copy is very easy and doesn't change the original one a single bit.
If what you mean is that they should get some money for their work then that's a really different kind of question and there are a lot of ways to give the artist money for their work.
The big problem here is that most people tend to think in the terms of phisical objects whith their limitations; virtual objects or information doesn't have the same limitations and thus must be treated differently.
PD: sorry, there's probably a lot of spelling and grammar errors there but english isn't my primary language.
If the sender is going to remove most of the conversation so you don't have to scroll to see their reply at the bottom then it isn't a big deal to read the screen from bottom to top, specially if you have those nice ('>') quote indicators. And is better to have the most relevant part of the email at the top where you can see it clearly and your eyes can go always to the same part of the screen to start reading instead of going to the bottom and scan the text up until the last reply starts.
this just slows down the spammers but can't stop them. If you have a small number of choices it's just a matter of how much the spammer must try to get through. You present 10 images with 1 correct, the spammer has a 10% chance and that's enough to make his bussiness work. I'm not really in favor of captchas but multiple choices won't work for long.
Have you seen Dynebolic? Nice work if you ask me, just take a look. All you have to do is burn the CD and reboot. Hope you like it

That's what USE flags are for. You're don't have to select every function of every ebuild. The idea is you set the flags with the functions you want in or out and then every time you install something with Portage it looks your settings to include or exclude the relevant parts of the code. Of course some complex ebuilds have lots of flags and some especifig ones too but in the end is a really nice system.
I haven't used the new interface but that's exactly what I though from the screenshots.
I takes too much sapce and it's too shiny. I don't need to be distracted with the bright plastic look of all those buttons, the content I'm working on is the important part, not the tools. I've seen a lot of UI redesigns which make the content less important and give the buttons and tools too much space and care. We all know they have a lot of people working on that graphics and UI but the best UI, IMHO, is the one you don't notice, the one that lets you do your work without getting in the way or taking to much attention to itself. From the screenshots this new ribbon has almos 20% the space of the content area and has a lot of colors, gradiendts. Yes, maybe the first time I need a button I'll find it easy but you know what? I won't be using most of them everytime and they will be taking up space and resoucers.
I don't know what it was but it's broken now.
Server Error in '/' Application.
Runtime Error
Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.
He's not talking about society, he's talking about natural selection. As it's undestrood most of the time, natural selection can't make a big diference to us now simply because we (human kind) have developed a lot of ways to overcome what would have eliminated or selected out an individual in a natural (without human intervention) envioroment.
Nobody says any individual can't contribute to society just because he has some kind of problem or limitation beyond what's normal to the rest of the humans. Actually, the ability to let everybody contribute with their best despite their flaws is one big advantage to us as a specie.

Oh, please, if your biggest problem validating a site is you don't want to type a pair of quotes then either you are too bored of the things that are really important or you shouldn't be writing any HTML at all. It makes senses, it lets you be sure nothing inside the quotes gets confused with something else, and it's easier for humans and computers to know where the parameter ends and the rest of the code continues.
When you browse to a site you have not visited before, the browser sends a request for site information to our server. The requests contains the domain name of the site and a hash value of the URL. We don't send the full URL, but we need a fingerprint of the full URL in case you visit a dangerous page on a site that is otherwise harmless.
See, their not tracking every page, just a domain and a hash. Besides you can turn it off whenever you want.
What I'd like to see is an email client with the functionality of Opera's M2. The implementation is not really good, but that is the best way to handle emails. Labels and autogenerated views. That's where some clients are slowly going like Gmail and Thunderird. I hate to waste my time dragin emails from one folder to another. Folders are a nice metaphore but they're just an aid for those who have trouble thinking in abstractions beyond the phisical world.
Althoug they still have to find out how to provide the light source, a little screen folded inside the phone/pda over which to direct the lasers could be interesting. Especially to watch videos since you could have double or triple size than current screens.
>and it's a pain in the ass for most joe schmoes to install.
I may agree with you that people won't be migrating to Linux but that last line, come on, wake up, it's not '90 anymore, Linux isn't more trouble to install (on most hardware) than Windows and you even can try it with a LiveCD in '5 minutes without any installation process.
It's a game, it doesn't have to change with time, it doesn't have to be better games in terms of gameplay. Think of sports, football (soccer), tennis, etc. how long are people playing them? however they haven't changed a lot in the last 50 years. Think about sex (let the jokes begin), has it changed much in the last 100 years? do you expect better forms of sex to become avaliable with the new wave of technology?
Well, that's an interesting question but I see it from the other side: Do I want to increase the abilities of the machine to bring it down to my level or do I want to increase my own abilities to be able to manipulate information in more powerful ways? What I see is people making the machines compensate for their inhabilities, i.e.: problem: managers can't work with abstract concepts solution: change the concept, make it look like material I'd rather try to make the manager learn to use abstractions. One of the most common examples of tipical users is grandma but grandma didn't have computers when she grow up. If, instead of taking the challenge and trying to enhance our abilities we keep trying to make things easier what we are doing is avoid a chance to increase our abilities. I'd like to see the kids in 10 years think and do things I find hard to understand instead of see machines so great that they can do everything themselves, even comunicate with people who can't understand something they can't see.

Nop, it seems BlueRay has this too so save the name for something else (if it ever happens) http://hardware.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=19630 0&cid=16084700

You should write a book or a blog about your expriences. It would be really interesting to read what you are describing in detail.
