The ability to carry inexpensive spare batteries and install software from a vast selection combines well with less restrictive codecs.

Software Engineering is NOT an engineering degree any more than Forest Engineering is (and it isn't at all). Only, attending my high school's graduation cerimony proved that this only matters if you're willing to bring your lawyer.

The entire graduating class (and all junior escorts) were searched by security gaurds and they removed any phones, weapons, food, electronics, almost anything. There was no specific threat or reason to believe that the entire student body would be breaking any rules. The only part of what you said that applied is that girls who put phones between their breasts weren't caught and a few guys managed to put their's in their pants. Oh, and shoes were not removed in the search. Further, most of the students were not minors. Refusal to be search or have your phone (or in my case, food) removed resulted in being escorted out of the building with no way to contact any family that might be expecting to see you there.

The only probable way to have avoided such theft (do you trust school officials with your property? not ours) was to either place your property in a location which wasn't searched or bring your lawyer with you (assuming that you knew this was going to happen, no warning was given).

Yeah, you have rights, but just try to exercise them.

This is really an excellent method. I've been asked to estimate the time it will take to develope a system that is likely to take about 500 hours and is completly new and customized to the client. The only way to do this is to get a detailed feature list from the client (or boss) and break this down into known units which you have experience in building. This allows the most accurate possible estimate as it reduces unexpected parts (you've defined everything already) and allows you to incorperate this new data into your next quote in order to improve accuracy.
As a bonus, this way you can write a contract with detailed information on services to be performed and avoid costly feature creep.

  13. What TYPE of robotics? on Preparing for a Career in Robotics? · · Score: 1

If you're talking about the most common (by modles and quantities) robots then you don't want AI as much as mechanical engineering or computer engineering.

If you're hopinh to get into AI with robotics you're probably looking at spending the next 10 years either as a student or researcher for a large university (CMU has been mentioned but others work too) and the degree you get should be based on having a well rounded knowledge of robotics (your PhD and research will establish a specialty).

If you'd like to do more consumer robotics you want computer engineering as it covers the relatively low level of mechanical design and high levels of electrical and software work that goes into consumer level robotics.

The last option is military or private company R&D in which case you'll need to specialize and work with a team of complimenting specialists so just chose to study in depth what it is that you like.

Now, before you do anything, remember that I'm 18 and haven't yet started on my B.S. in Computer Engineering. With that in mind, ask yourself why the above a) is wrong or b) wasn't obvious already.

  25. what happened to me on Advice for Linux on a Laptop? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I ran linux on my laptop after I switched to linux and had too much trouble with drivers. Hint one: research drivers BEFORE buying. Some manufacturers customize the hardware so even an nvidia card doesn't necessarily work.

After buying a researched and compatible machine the drivers worked and wireless/video were possible. Problem is that linux on a laptop for anybody that pokes and tries new stuff means that you're constantly fixing and researching. I'm not upset but you must be aware that you're not going to get it working perfect or ever keep things as desired. It is delicate (thought problems are localized, it is linux) and different distros are wildly different on laptops. Ubuntu has worked well for me on this one but Fedora was better on my last, expect to experiment some before settling on the best option.
