Yeah just think about it before you mod it down ok?
For Gods sake WOW Linux was on TV!!!!!! I thought this was a news site. Jaysus, get over it!
It doesn't matter because people are going to use the OS that suits their needs. Be it Linux, Windows, MacOS or God Help Us Os/2 Warp;)
It doesn't matter because Linux isn't the be-all and end-all of Operating Systems. Yeah I use it and I like it, it suits my needs but FFS, it's only an OS! There's no need to get excited because it's on TV. If you see people use Macs in Movies and you think it's to make it look like EVERYONE uses Macs let me tell you it's not. It's because Macs have pretty interfaces. They LOOK nice. That's all that matters on the big screen.
And before you start screaming about Linux yeah I know you can make it look just as purty, but it takes just a lil bit more effort than a Mac. Hey at least they don't use Windows:) hehe
If you want movies to be realistic then you need to get a grip. Most movies are FICTION. Who cares if some gets a big 'ACCESS DENIED' image when they turn on their computer. It makes for better films.
This place has really gone downhill recently. Come on guys, ye're getting paid for it now FFS!
To err is human,
To really screw up, you need a computer!
My vote's for Eric too, if it wasn't for him I might never have started using Linux at all. His essays are an inspiration to anyone who's interested in computers in any way.
I go to a small college in the south of Ireland. Last year there was one computer class and they could barely handle that. This year there are two first year classes. The explanation given was that the industry needs more skilled workers, Pity really, these kids are gonna have no real skill at all.
All this Government funding stuff might sound really great, and it might get more people into CS *BUT* the people who were gonna do CS anyway, the ones that like the course are gonna lose out. They're gonna have to put up with people that just don't get it, people that just want that piece of paper so they can get a job and relax for the rest of their lives.
I often hear people tell newbies when buying a computer that the bigger the number the better. There's an attitude rife throughout the PC world that you have to have the latest version of everything. No matter what the cost. Call it techno-lust, whatever. It's like the guy that bought the Discman a few years ago for 250 quid and now they're giving them away.
This kind of attitude is what drives this 'ship first, ask questions later' market. You should have seen my tutors eyes light up when one of the guys in my class offered him a copy of Win2K beta (he's a Microserf), imagine how many bugs there'll be in that!
People don't have to realise that there'll be delays. People need to protest at having to put up with shoddy software and maybe then the large corporations will put more effort into making better software.
You'll have to admit that no piece of software is ever free from bugs, they'll always be there because it's impossible to predict conflicts between certain pieces of hardware etc.
The real problem is that many major manufacturers aim for a shipping date rather than a quality product.
I'll prolly get flaim-baited for this but 'That's the way things work these days' I just hope OSS makes a big enough impact

Seems to me that they only have eyes for Merced and not the end user. They definetely need a good marketing strategy, out of 23 people in my Data Comm class three had _heard_ of AMD, only one was informed enough to know that it was a better chip.
It's a sad fact that in this game it's rarely the superior technology that wins, just look at Microsoft.
People are starting to come around as regards to software, but not many 'lay' people understand the difference between RISC and CISC etc.
Saying that, I guess good marketing is the key, not education.
You could say the same for Linux, The LDP is an excellent resource for Linux newbies and gurus alike. When I first came across it I was much more than impressed.
I had an old PC that I took apart, well it fell down the stairs first;) I managed to make some pretty cool things out of pieces I found in there, like the memory dog-tags and the HD platter clock. Anyone else into making stuff out of old PC parts?
I think I saw Cliff Stoll make a goldfish bowl out an old Mac monitor before on TV that was pretty cool too.
very poor ^^^

It just has to be, Running Linux is THE book to learn about Linux, he deserves it.

"I aint getting in no spaceship fool!" Thionk!
They'd probably give folks a sedative or something, the passengers won't be doing anything crucial anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

What am I saying, this is the way it is now!
It's for when you're REALLY angry and you want to let your computer know it:
CONTROL-ALT-Grrrrr-DELETE *poof*
I think it actually means 'gear' and I'm guessing it was conceived by the same person that thought up of ISDN as an acronym.
There is more to life than making it go faster - Gandhi
On past experience, I only buy books with animals on the cover. You know when you're buying an O'Reilly book you'll be safe.
Also, never buy a book with a number in the title.
I think you hit the nail on the head there,
98 is a bigger number than 95, ship it.
I often hear people tell newbies when buying a computer that the bigger the number the better.

Yeah it looks like ye've killed segfault. And I can't wait to read that South Park story
Are they gonna have daemons caged up there?
