The abundance of $10-$15 movies nowadays seems amazing to me. Actually, this makes what the MPAA has done even more incredible. They've lowered their price by 75%, and are still making tons of money. The RIAA needs to stop being such asses and lower their prices.

First of all, let me say that I love Mozilla. Mozilla Firebird is my default browser at home, on my laptop, on my wife's PC and on my work desktop.

However, your signature shows the exact problem, and the reason why IE will (unfortunately) continue to hold onto the browser market. You use IE at work because that is what is installed (and I am guessing you cannot download a different browser). For Joe Consumer, IE is what is installed on their computer, and Joe doesn't know that he can download a different browser. He'll continue using IE, because he doesn't know any better.

M$'s move to tie IE to Windows may have been a questionable marketing move, but having an IE icon on every Windows desktop was brilliant. People are lazy and unmotivated to download something if they have another program that works "just as well."

It does not matter how easy getting and installing Mozilla is for users. Most users still will not, they'll still just use what is installed on their computer.

What the Mozilla Foundation needs to do is get deals with computer manufacturers to pre-install Mozilla, and put an icon for the big lizard on the desktop. However, that'd cost millions, millions that the Foundation does not have.

I think you took the original posters remarks so personally that you completely lost track of the point being made.

I have a story to tell. It's a true story. The "user" may have been YOU (the attitude is right).

Good story, but it doesn't address the point being made. To add to your example to illustrate the point: suppose that someone else decided that your 8087 emulator was good, but lacked some features. Instead of offering to help you implement those features, however, they decided to write a brand-new emulator, starting from scratch. They finish, they get it running, and it does have the features your emulator lacked. However, their emulator lacks some features that your emulator has.

Obviously, if the person who wrote the other emulator had simply joined forces with you, the result would've been an emulator that had all of your features and all the features that she wanted added, too. It would make an all-around better piece of software, instead of two emulators that are good, but lack certain features.

That is what keeps happening in the free software realm today. A lot of programmers are essentially saying, "well, ksampleprogram doesn't have a file import feature, so I'll build kanothersample that does the same thing AND has an import feature." Which is counter to the driving philosophies of open source. Instead, programmers should say, "ksampleprogram doesn't have a file import feature, so I'll add it and submit it back to the ksampleprogram team."

Why isn't this happening? Programmer ego probably does have a lot to do with it. A lot of people would rather be listed as Project Owner than Contributing Programmer.

Even better, emusic supports full album download with a single click using empxform or Zinf (silly Windows users can use emusic's own client)! Click the button, go away, come back in an hour or two and your album is there. (Or, for those of us with a broadband connection, come back in 15 minutes or so.)

You think that novice users/new computer owners are going to know the Office XP icons? I've talked with users here at work (I work on a help desk) that have been using Windows and Office for years and still can't remember which icon launches which office app.

As long as the icon is labelled, users won't care what it looks like.

install Opera as the default browser, change the icons as above and set it up to mimic IE,

See above. For a novice user, it'd be better to make the icon look like AOL's icon instead of IE. But the best thing to do is to make sure the icon, no matter what it LOOKS like, is labelled "Internet".

install GIMP and change it as above to look like MS Paint,

Novice users are not going to expect a paint program to come with their computer. And The Gimp is not equivalent to MS Paint, anyway, it's more of a Paint Shop Pro/Photoshop application.

port Real Player and WMP to Linux and then somehow set it up so it crashes more often.

There's a native version of Real Player for Linux; Mandrake includes it with their distro. There's no solution for WMP, of course. For everything that you mentioned in your comment, WMP is the only valid point. Lack of WMP support just may be a problem on these computers. But it won't be a big one.
