It's to qwell the rumours that 3DRealms would be bundling DNF on the new CD. Seriously.

Drug prohibition has been going full strength since the 70's, and it hasn't showed any signs of slowing. It's responsible for jailing people that arn't real criminals, just as prohibition did, and it's certainly contributed to crime, just as prohibition did. Not to mention the havoc in third world governments that illegal drugs are netting. Drugs havn't been made legal, and I doubt they will be. Corporations didn't have nearly as much power over the government back in the early 20th century, but they do now. Don't expect a turn around of the DMCA in 10 years, it's not likely to happen.
The Amendments to the Constitution were made to protect the citizens from the GOVERNMENT, not each other. Remember, corporations are considered private single person entities. Even though these very same airlines got a shitload of money back in 2001 because of lack of passengers.
That's exactly what the amendments were created for. Upon ratification of the Constitution Jefferson felt that there wasn't enough protection for the citizens, he agreed to approve it if more protections were made, so they drafted the Bill of Rights.
The only difference between the United States' new policy on this and.. say.. Nazi Germany is that Nazi Germany implemented that stuff in a democratic vacuum. Hitler had already controlled the Legislative branch of the German political arena. It's nothing when a dictator initates some new terms.
The United States is free (on paper at any rate, flame on your own terms) and this is a huge step toward a Fascist German fear state chock full of propoganda. Hell, we get tons of propoganda every four years, this being one of them. How long will it take before people start walking around asking for your papers for absolutely no reason? Call me paranoid if you want, but it seems not far off with this ruling being the can opener for the worms.
I've been to Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and I've looked at the only unlaunched Saturn V. It's the biggest thing I've ever seen. Sure, I've also been to New York and seen the World Trade Center, the Empire State Building, et el., but people don't put billions of pounds of liquid oxygen inside of the Empire State Building, set it on fire, and fly to the moon with it.
This is the kind of software that the EU should be bitching about for anti-trust. Windows should have anti-virus software built in, not a media player or web browser.
It's not that amazing. A large portion of the meteorite is boiled off from the heat, so not only is the atmosphere making a cushion, but it's also removing mass, thus decreasing the KE even more.
Here's a tip: If you're coding something that isn't meant to be open source, such as an operating system by Microsoft, or a game by Valve or Id, do NOT have the computer connected to the internet. Period. Set up a local lan that doesn't get access to outside the building, so they can hot-sync with each other. Put another computer on the desk and use a single monitor/keyboard and switch between the two. Gotta email the boss for an update, switch over to the internet ready computer, then switch back to the text editor and get back to work.
I'm not saying the break in was right. It was the shadow opposite, but it was also partly the fault of Valve for allowing their computers to be suseptable to the possibility in the first place. Tons of script kiddies play Counter-Strike, they've got an unhealthy obsession with Valve, so it's natural to err on the side of caution.
I went to the mall a few days ago with a friend of mine, and he went into one of those health food stores. They sell unlicensed health products, and I almost laughed one of the salespeople out when she was trying to explain what this product did, but just managed to make herself sound like an idiot.
What's to stop someone from making a a boatload of spam and use it to shut down a company they don't like? I'm sure the vast majority of slashdot would start sending spam advertising a pre-order of Longhorn, and then the feds would go and blame Microsoft when they didn't do anything.
Reguardless of how things are today, 200 years ago the United States' government was being used as a template to remove the aging monarchies of Europe. How many follow a direct democracy vs the representative one that the United States has? Spain, Germany, The UK, France, Italy, just about every member of the E.U. The U.N. was also fashioned around the same kind of system. In the general assembly every nation recieves one vote. Reguardless of size. China and Luxembourg have the same number of votes in the general assembly, but China has a hell of a lot more influence in the world than Lunxembourg.
There was an instance a long time ago during a presidential election when an elector voted for, I believe, the person that was the winner's running mate. I can't remember when it happened, but the votes tallied something like most of the vote to the shoe-in, a few to the loser, and one point to the shoe-in's running mate.
Ion Storm used the same modified Unreal engine on Thief 3 that was used on Deus Ex 2. Any form of AI would have been a welcomed addition to that engine.
The Greeks calculated the distance from the Earth to Sol in a less complicated manor, using very simple means, they had calculations for the size of the moon and the size of Sol, they also figured out the distance to the moon, and used similar triangles to calculate the distance between the two, because during an eclipse they appear to be the same size.
Using a SCSI-IDE solution would make you lose out on the speed increases, if they existed. Check out some reviews of those Raptor SATA drives that run at 10k RPM, they've got almost identical speeds as SCSI.
Agreed. If this is really a "free country" then we should be able to listen to the radio or watch TV and hear a person saying fuck. If someone is offended by the word, too bad, they can change the channel. Leave it up to the stations to decide what to air, because they own the damned channel. Freedom of speech means just that, the freedom to express your views. Aparently the FCC forgot that when you say a bad word on radio you can't just turn the radio off, they assumed that the person would stupidly keep the radio on and keep being offended until they got so depressed they'd kill themselves.
Let em monitor the air for radio signals from a bomb.
Well, I for one, welcome our new Tux overlords.

Speaking of recharge, does anyone know how long it takes?
RTFA: 6 hours from a 110 volt North American power outlet, and about half that for the European 220 volt version.

I don't suppose we can appeal this can we?
Are you crazy? It's not useless!
Not everyone has played enough Tux Racer to know that penguins can't fly.
Google better not steal the /. effect from us... they have created a synonym for internet search, I hope a "Googling" won't replace a proper /.ing.
Someone in Intel's engineering department needs to research the active heatsink for a chipset.
Look at the size of that thing.

Wasn't the country's ideal built around the phrase "Government by the people, and for the people."?

The Universe is a pretty big place, how did they manage to compress it into an MP3 that can fit on the average computer?
Actully the new line of Athlon 64's have a built in protection mechanism for just this sort of calamity. AMD learns from the past.
