slashdot is becoming more like a cheap tabloid everyday - making up sensational headlines from sentences in articles used out of context to sell their news to the readers.
whatever happened to fair, unbiased news for the nerds? are the editors listening?
Is it really incompatibility issues with Windows that should be highlighted here or the incompetency of the IT administrators that support the applications? Why on earth would you deploy something when it has "experimental" support for another piece of application that you know you will be widely using? Did they do any research or did they just choose tools they thought were the best in their specific areas (DB = oracle, web server= apache, os = windows) without thinking about interoperability?
And you, my friend, are such a perfect example of an evolved and a "right" human being; so eloquently putting your thoughts across. Yes, peace is the way to go.
Of course, the world is wrong - you're right. There's nothing to worry about any more.
For those of you who are interested, I have put up a compile of company website screenshots on my website. It seems that a lot of companies (in the computer industry at least) are displaying solidarity with the hurricane victims.
Screenshots
First of all, companies like IBM and Microsoft do not have donation websites - they have websites that have information about how to donate - and contain links to valid and legitimate organizations.
Secondly, Microsoft has already donated $1 million (so far) and is matching EVERY donation made by its full-time employees (that counts for something).
Thirdly, IMHO, companies put up these websites to display their solidarity with the people affected by the tragedy and to raise awareness through distributing FREE information on their HIGHLY popular websites (do you know how many hits the MS and the IBM websites get?).
How about you also take into account the industrial development and the effect of human population in the last 30 and the last million years?
IMHO, the last 100 years have seen more man induced environmental degradation than the million years before that. Yeah, natural shit happens, but we are talking about what we - as humans - can do.
Since when did IBM start "selling" Windows? If you are talking about the PCs, think Lenovo.
This is complete propaganda since IBM is basing it's future on the hopes that Linux will take off and will eventually trump Windows. That's the reason behind all the research, studies etc. Every corporation first goal is to make money - not do social good.
You will also have to wait till OS X supports all the hardware Windows does and it's userbase grows to something even *worthwhile* to compare to Windows - making it somewhat tempting to spyware writers to target it.
How many 3rd party hardware vendors ship Linux device drivers as compared to Windows drivers?
The major share of Windows crashes are due to poorly written device drivers that 3rd party hardware vendors write. In the past, these drivers has access to critical sections of the kernel and so if for example, they had a buffer overrun, it was possible that it could write a critical section of the kernel space, thus bringing down the machine. With Vista, this is going to change.
I am only saying that the original poster did get it right by saying that Windows crashes mostly because of compatibility issues and not because of poorly written software. I agree, MS has had its share of problems (security, architecture and etc.), but it does not change this fact.
I don't know about you guys but I don't think the website is showing any signs of being Slashdotted. It's fast and zippy even after over 300 comments - must be heck of a server.
i like my dell quietkey the best. it's got it "clickety" feel (even though it's called a quiet key) and it just feels good. what's your favorite keyboard?
Once again, another angry, MS-hating, troll-liking Slashdot poster makes up his/her own story - that MONAD will not be included in Vista because of virus threat mentioned on Slashdot. Nothing could be further from the truth. On RTFA, nowhere does it mention the so-called "reason" for not including it in Vista - the simple fact of the matter is - it's not ready yet! Say what you have to say, the poster just wants a kick out of baseless, worthless and utterly mindless comments.
It hasn't been "quietly" put up on the internet - it has been there for a while. MS uses it for testing and research. If you do notice, it is WAY better than Google's start page too - you can actually drag the various sections on the page and place them anywhere on the page.
By the way, I mentioned the page before : here
MS realized that the last IE as well as the last OS (prior to XP) had some major security problems. Making all software back compatible is only going to make them more susceptible to similar problems. Going forward, and considering the fact that it has been over 5 years since the release of XP, it is thus wise that they are restricting it to XP only. In the IT industry, if you have not upgraded in 5 years (user programs, OS, Apps etc - not mission critical infrastructure), then there's something lacking and left to be desired. The software industry is constantly evolving and so should you. Who here run pre-2.0 kernel on their Linux boxes? I am sure some of you do, but not many.
hah .. you could just put 60 xbox 360s together to achieve that kind of power ..
xbox 360 specs
Here

have a good day!
so is making false statements and propoganda a part of OSTG policy? wow, nice organization you got there.

You're wrong.
It should be (10^100)^-6. So 10^94.
Micro is ^-6 . ^-3 is milli.

I suppose then Slashdot should be categorized as a Category 6 storm. Resistance is futile.

How many people try to run enormous traffic sites on OSX Server? Nobody?
.. how about apple.com?
Umm

What I don't understand is why Google can't do a global update of the "Google" logo for the 404 error? Are they that incompetent? :)

well said. it makes me sick too. friggin' morons.

Any wanna give MS's beta start.com a try? IMHO, it's much better in terms of usability, interface and aesthetics.
