User listening data is not really that useful as a tool for filing lawsuits. It is useful as a tool for tracking and potentially identifying leaks. For example: suppose User X listened to a new album ten days before it was actually released, and is friends (on the site) with User Y who listened to it twelve days before the release date, and User Y is friends with User Z whose profile matches up with an intern at the studio. Odds are that User Z -- the intern -- is the source of the leak.
And then users X, Y and Z are all sued in court for copyright infringement.
Apple's netbook / tablet PC will be out sometime in 2010 and, as usual, it will rewrite the rules and Microsoft will then change these silly specifications in an attempt to try and catch up to Apple. I've seen this movie before.
And justifiably so. This entire thing is a joke. This guys lawyers are going to have a field day suing the overzealous assholes involved in this clearly illegal search and seizure and I'd go after the government lawyers that should have known better than to try and defend their actions as well.
More Slashdot hyperbole. Voicemail isn't going away anytime soon. Voicemail will go away about the same time Linux is widely adopted on the desktop. That is to say, not anytime soon.
I agree. I thought the initial made for TV movie was good enough that I'd give the show a chance. I really loved the first few episodes but I gradually lost interest. Stopped watching completely somewhere during season 2.
Reader h11:6 points out news of a recent study which suggests that "Android's open source nature will give it a boost over Apple's iPhone," and thus take the lead in sales as soon as three years from now.
You can find a study that will say just about anything. If Andriod sales overtake iPhone sales it'll be because it's a better phone that provides the average consumer with a better experience than the iPhone presently offers. The average consumer could care less about the development model of the apps that you can download on a phone. They don't even know what that means.
Apple's biggest weakness isn't it's app development model. It is it's exclusive contract with AT&T. As soon as that's over, watch out. I know a ton of people who want an iPhone but they either can't or won't switch to AT&T in order to get one.
Should we bring back everything popular from eight years ago? How about floppy discs?
Some things should be left in the past. Emailing pictures to people is more sensible than MMS.
Except that not everybody has an e-mail address. Several close friends of mine either don't have an e-mail address or don't check their e-mail often. All of them have cell phones with MMS. The "e-mail it" approach is candy ass. There shouldn't be anything that a free cellphone (given to you by the cell phone company when you sign a contract) can do that the iPhone can not do.
The original iPhone has been out for almost two years now. I can understand that they'd give a higher priority to shoring up the OS, getting a 3G version out there and then putting out an SDK, but IMO after that their priority should be filling in some of the holes in functionality. It's ridiculous that things like the ability to forward text messages, MMS, and copy and paste are still missing from the iPhone almost two years after it has been released.
Is it supposed to be surprising that they didn't rewrite their entire codebase for every new OS release?!? Obviously Windows 7 is going to be built on top of the Vista codebase, that's how almost every software release works. Usually if a company decides to rewrite a program from the ground up (see: Adobe from time to time), the rewritten version is less featureful, less stable, and takes much longer to come out than the previous version.
Yes but when it comes to OS's in the long run it's beyond worth it. See OS X. It's time for Microsoft to abandon the Windows code base and re-write Windows from the ground up. Build virtualization right into the OS for those who need backward compatibility. Oh and they should have no more than 3 versions. A home version, a business version and a server version. I'd prefer only one that could do it all but this is Microsoft we're talking about. If they are smart they'll eliminate bloat within the company first. The amount of bureaucracy is laughable and if they don't do that first a re-wright from the ground up will take as long to produce as Duke Nukem Forever.
Or people could just get off of their lazy asses and go buy one WITHOUT a coupon. We're talking about $40 bucks. If you ask the me this entire program is one giant boondoggle. The government should only be subsidizing these things for poor people who actually need it and can't afford it on their own. Having a website where anybody can sign up for a coupon is beyond ridiculous. I realize we're talking about peanuts when it's compared to the overall budget, but we're still talking about millions of dollars that could be spent on feeding the hungry and housing the homeless. Lord knows we need it in this economy.
How Americans went from a "can do" people to a bunch of lazy whiners who can't do anything without governments help is beyond me. It's $40 bucks. Skip fast food for two or three weeks during lunch and have some soup instead and there's your $40 bucks. You'll be healthier and you can get your box without a coupon from the government. Two birds with one stone.
When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. The correct answer to which kind of apps developers should focus on writing is "All of the Above". I want web apps, I want native apps written for specific operating systems, I want cross-platform apps written in languages like Java, I want hybrid apps that use web services. The more choices we have the easier it is to find just the right tool for the job,
I don't know why, but the fact that he's constantly reffed to as Jimbo annoys the hell out of me and makes me dislike him. Anybody named Jimmy who wants other people to refer to him as Jimbo instead of Jimmy or Jim after the age of 12 or 13 has issues.
Welcome to the new globalized corporate economy. The same greedy corporate types that have been screwing things up here for all of us are arising everywhere. Get used to it. With all of the influx of cash will come enormous greed. On the plus side a rising tide will lift all boats. On the minus side you'll see amazing acts of greed that will do a hell of a lot of damage if it's left unchecked. Your government must be vigilant in it's oversight and your people must hold your government accountable if it isn't.
Terrorism is horrible. That being said, how many Palestinians die for every Israeli? Last time I checked 8 Israeli's died because of the rockets and there have been well over 500 Palestinian deaths as a result of the Israel's latest military action. I used to be pro Israel. Now I'm not so sure. The death toll is very lopsided and it isn't exactly a new development. The whole thing is disturbing and both sides are at fault.
Of you don't have to be a psychic to know prices rise. It's called inflation, but you would have to have been psychic to know how fast they would have risen over the course of the past two years and to know at what point that was going to happen so you could suddenly have a boat load of fuel efficient vehicles hit the market at the exact time the market started demanding them. The point is that vehicle sales are market driven and here in the US gas was, and has now returned, to being dirt cheap. When you have dirt cheap gas and serious tax incentives to drive SUV's it doesn't take a genius to figure out there is going to be a serious market for SUV's. Had US auto makers ignored that market somebody else would have stepped in and done it. That's how free markets work. If there is a demand for something, somebody is going to fill it.
If the US government had a brain it would have been slowly raising gasoline taxes to curb usage over a period of several years starting about a year and a half after 9/11 (when the partially 9/11 induced recession hit). That would have eased consumers out of their bad habits. Instead the Bush Administration did nothing. You can't blame US car companies for building vehicles that consumers want to buy. It's basic supply and demand. It's the government's responsibility to either raise taxes to affect that market or to pass laws that force fuel efficiency on all vehicles sold or driven in the US. Time will tell if the US has learned it's lesson and I'm skeptical. Our government would be insane to raise taxes on fuel now that we're in the throws of a major recession but in about a year when this thing has subsided it would be insane not to announce that there will be national gas tax that will raise the cost of gasoline to $6.00 a gallon over the course of 5 or 6 years (with 100% of the revenue generated being put into research into alternative energy and upgrading our energy infrastructure). That will create the market for fuel efficient vehicles and lower fuel usage over time without the economic shock of the recent spike. $6.00 a gallon gas is a great incentive to decrease our dependence on oil and will create a serious demand for fuel efficient vehicles and vehicles powered by alternative sources but it's got to be done over time so consumers can prepare themselves for it.
There is no need to posts facts as an AC. The facts are the facts. Just because these fools can't handle the truth doesn't mean that reasonable people like you and I should hide from them. Damn the facts, these tools are in college so damn the real word. They've studied it so they know better than we do.
Kudos for speaking truth to the idiots who believe they are enlightened. Hey, let's rip on Detroit. It's their fault that there are all of these SUVs and damn them for the fact that consumers ate them up like crack. That clearly had nothing to do with it. The car companies are clearly at fault for making products people actually wanted to buy. Damn them!!!!!
And then users X, Y and Z are all sued in court for copyright infringement.

Well it's about fucking time.
"Editions" ... for an OS?? LOL @ you fucking suckers. Screw MS. They've been screwing you since XP "Home Edition" ...
I agree. I thought the initial made for TV movie was good enough that I'd give the show a chance. I really loved the first few episodes but I gradually lost interest. Stopped watching completely somewhere during season 2.

Best Buy has plenty of online competition even if it's the only physical retailer in an area. I think that will keep them on their toes.
Since most Netflix members still use the service to watch DVD's I highly doubt it.
So they wan to help laid off workers, just not their own laid off workers?
Microsoft Bungles Severance, Asks Laid Off Workers for Money Back
How Microsoft-esque
The word cloud in this context is a stupid buzz word that we can all do without.
