Apple said the issues found were the result of an internal audit of the software drivers and that no known exploits exist for the issues addressed in this update.

Apple has maintained that SecureWorks has provided no proof that Mac drivers are vulnerable in any way.
"They did not supply us with any information to allow us to identify a specific problem, so we initiated an internal audit," Apple spokesman, Anuj Nayar, told Macworld. Back in middle school, my 6th grade science teacher gave out weekly grade sheets (quite unusual) and posted grade updates in the back of her room. The thing was, so students couldn't compare grades, she used SSNs instead of names. So there was a list of 50-60 SSNs in the back of a science classroom, right out in the open. I always thought it was insecure, although it did force me to memorize my SSN, which was helpful.

Today, I think the whole school system has replaced using SSNs with using "NCWise" numbers, although in high school SSNs were/are only used as computer passwords (last five digits of your SSN was your password).

Too bad the promenent Windows client dropped support for FastTrack/KaZaA (they got hit by a C&D by Sharman), but it still searches Gnutella (not as well as LimeWire, I have to admit) and OpenFT (my all time favorite network, although it's very unstable--if you can connect, it's great, giFT devs are reworking parts of the network code to fix some huge bugs, so good things might happen there).
Mac users get Poisoned (currently under a rewrite, but it's opensorce, supports FastTrack, Gnutella and OpenFT and has a nice fourm :) ). There are other clients, see the outdated list here. giFT is very nice, opensource (note: Xfactor, the other Mac OS X client, is NOT opensource, that's one of the reasons I stick with Poisoned), free, and supports major networks--it's pretty nice!

  11. Re:What's up with MPEG4? on ExtremeTech Wages War of the Codecs · · Score: 5, Interesting

Apple's MPEG-4 has both a mediocre encoder and decoder. 3ivx is a much better choice, it both decodes MPEG4 (and Divx/XviD) with better postfilters (the best, argurably), even scaled to how much CPU time it can grab. Its encoder is extremely nice, and very userfriendly, and it's extremely high quality. (And before you point Doom9's tests, Doom9 has NOT been configuring 3ivx correctly, so he's shooting himself in the foot). It has a 'trial' codec free (no real restrictions, but only for 'trial use') available for both Windows, Mac, and even BeOS (older versions are available for Linux and other platforms).

Referring about Sorenson, keep in mind this is the FREE codec that comes with Quicktime Pro. Professionals use a several hundred dollar 'Developers Edition' with Cleaner (two pass VBR encoding, which makes Sorenson rock). I know this is a for-user comparison, but in the professional scene, Sorenson can be even better then third/second place in quality.

When she ran Windows XP, Internet Explorer, Mulberry (mail), Photoshop, Word, and several other programs at the same time, needless to say, it was slower then molasses.
I guess that if nothing else, this will get computer manufacturers to offer more RAM in their computers when they find 128MB, or even 256MB, won't cut it anymore.

If this is the best of the industry's tries, they're doomed. I agree with other posters, there needs to be a site like iTunes for movie files.

I have downloaded full movies, but I also asked for all those movies on DVD for Christmas, and gotten several of them. I find viewing movies on my computer convienient, and I can do it anytime I want, instead of digging through my family's piles of VCR tapes to find a horribly-degraded copy.

I've even downloaded Two Towers during the period between the movie theatres showing it and the DVD--I wanted my TTT fix, so I downloaded it. Did I still buy both the theatrical and extended editions? Yes. Did I do the same for FoTR and will do the same for RoTK? Yes.

The movie industry (even though they're taking the first steps) needs to think of how to rectify the cause, rather then just responding to the effect.
