    Some of us like to make sure we're not sending the wrong message, specially on email. When you talk, if you say something odd, it'll probably be forgotten. Email, on the other hand, can be read and interpreted much further.

    you can make a very faithful reproduction, within the limits of the paper or output device of course.
    It's not that easy. If you're in a room with incandescent lighting, you see a white piece of paper (which is tinted yellow by the lights) as white. However, if you look at a picture of that paper without white-balancing, you'll say "why is it yellow?"

    I got rid of my tv in '95 or so, when I realized that the internet is all that tv ever promised and more.

    Now I'm not saying that it's right or justified or anything, but European conquest into North America is always vilified much more than any other tale of conquest, and I'm not sure why.
    What about the colonization of Africa? At least the native [north]americans can be part of a rich country, while Africans... they're on their own.

    You're assuming it's a commercial service you can buy. AFAIK it's a voluntary network of universities.

    Any assigned reading is bad. If I wanted to read that book then I would read that book.
    My literature teacher said the same thing: students won't enjoy the book if they are forced to read it and to do so in a limited time. However, after some kicking and screaming, you might get some of them to turn off the TV and read a fucking book.

    I'm currently in highschool and I can tell you games (although we haven't done any in a long while :) are a horrible way to learn. A good teacher can do wonders even with the least motivated of kids.

    What time was that? Did the East India Companies really care about the communities they worked in? What about the early companies in the industrial revolution?
    That period had a huge, unsatisfied demand and countries to exploit, so it's not a good example. I guess some company like HP or Tektronix of decades ago might qualify

    Is this hours of use or "real time" hours? I don't know about other people but my pendrives spend most of their time disconnected.

    The street sign thing may be right, but the package in the grocery store just isn't. The things written there are words of the English language, which is reasonably free from government intervention or definition (language is an evolutionary process). You call potato "potato" because some ancient Anglo-Saxonic tribes (influenced by French and Germanic tribes) converged to this name, not because your government said so.
    Actually, government does intervene in the naming of products and foods. For example, certain kind of hams must be called "pork something" instead of ham if they are not done a certain way.

    I agree. Sure, some argue any kind of marketing is manipulating the customer, but companies should stick to making their product known. Manipulating people is, in my opinion, shifting them from the best product (price/quality ratio) to the one with the best advertisements. That way, money is wasted both by the consumers and by the companies (which ultimately charge it to their clients).

    I'd just like a car with only minimal electronics, and a modern, efficient engine.
    Imagine something like the beetle. Not the old one (which is very pretty), since it's missing some advancements in fuel injection and safety. Not the new one, that does away with the principle of the beetle. a NEW one, small like the first, air cooled, efficient, simple, easy to fix (that means no computers where they aren't needed).
