In other news, an ad campaign was launched to defame free speech. Since free speech is essentially lost revenue for the communications business, so the parties argue, all speech should be taxed or otherwise paid for. One ad talks about that 'you can steal but you can't hide' ; another says 'speech is too valuable to be free'. The involved parties intend to continue until the free market has been restored..

  2. Re:So... on Tracking a Specific Machine Anywhere On The Net · · Score: 1

Look at it the other way around. If you suspect someone is doing evil deeds on the internet, all that needs to be done by law enforcement is gather some legitimate data from that person, for instance an e-mail. The clock skew can than be compared to the illegitimate traffic, for instance something routed through hundreds of hops, for the same clock skew.
Since the chance of having the exact same clock skew is very remote, this could then be used as real evidence in a court of law.

Ofcourse you can write a packet proxy that can rewrite the entire packet and forward it.

How are you going to process these function results? Do you think they can all write to the video ram at the same time? And how will you address thread exceptions?

Sure, firing a thousand threads is easy..
handling the thread results and errors, and communication between threads are the hard part.

For instance, launch a thousand threads simultaneously to add a new item to a listbox, and make it prone to errors, for instance by making each thread iterate over all items in the listbox while the other threads are still busy.

Count how many threads succeed, and how many fail with an exception. Note that most threads (70%+) will just vanish mysteriously without a warning whatsoever. (on win32 at least)

No, I'm not talking about SOAP. I'm not talking about DCOM, CORBA or any other means of RPC either.

I'm talking more about migrating running processes from one machine to another, by persisting the objects, and recreating them. More along the lines of having MOSIX built into the application.

A decent soap implementation can provide you with the xml representation of an object's state, which can be recreated and manipulated on almost any platform. what else would you like to transfer? You cannot store language independent method implementations in XML, its just the state.

  5. Re:Really? on Effective XML · · Score: 2, Insightful

I'm more interested in using XML as a means for language independent object persistence (not just cheesy .NET XmlSerializer class stuff either). How much coverage of such things is there in the book? Ie; creating an object in Java on one machine, persisting it and it's state to an XML file, and recreating it on some other machine in C++ or C#. I'm tired of writing my own "protocols" to migrate running code from one app to another.

You have obviously never looked into soap, which seems to be able to address every requirement you are describing.

But, not using Soap is quite common on Slashdot ;)
