I'm sure the Mars Lander's mom came in, yelled at him for moving so slowly, and sleeping most of the day, then cleaned his solar panels, and left in a huff....
While that does kind of suck that we had no idea of it before it passed "close" by, one has to ask, does it matter if we see it coming or not?
If an asteroid does head for us, will it matter if we see it coming or not? Or will the grandiose idea presented in "Armageddon" be employed (despite being cool as hell.)
Personally, i'd rather be blindsided by a sixteen-wheeler, than sit by and see it head towards me for hours/days/weeks.

GIMP 2.2 Released

If you have, you probably felt like a real jerk right after it slipped out of your mouth.
C'mon, change the name, we're not kids anymore, alright?
Most of us know we're talking about an application if we ever mention "The GIMP" to a handicapped person, and are mature enough to handle it.
That's almost along the lines of getting nervous about talking about the civil rights movement with a black person.
Give me a break, we're not kids anymore, remember?
I'm running FreeBSD on the desktop, and I've only had trouble getting the following binaries to compile and run: GTK, Qt, Firefox, Java 1, Java 2, Java 5, gaim, xchat, evolution, mozilla, thunderbird, open office, koffice, gedit....garsh, I don't know what the parent poster is talking about, sheesh
You'll be modded -1 Troll because you lack a sense of humour.
Most people know that MacOS X is not FreeBSD, and that it's based on NeXtStep, with the entire userland (almost) out of the FreeBSD 5.xx branch (10.4 anyways) (not just "some", a good bit)
He probably is what would be portrayed as a hackers-everyman.
I mean, yes, he does have a lot of CompSci and coding experience, but he does some of the necessary things that most people (relatively of course) can do, such as documentation, mirroring, and helping out with packages.
With how (seemingly) easy they ported Acrobat Reader to Linux, I can't imagine Photoshop being too much different.
The only difficult part would be the GUI stuff, all the underlying code is just C++, which, IIRC is pretty portable;) (unless you're writing with evil compiler-specific hacks)
Funny story my friend bill told me about WWDC (refrencing Photoshop's portability)
Apparently Apple gave free t-shirts if you have a project with over 5000 lines of code that you compiled with XCode. Some really dorky guy quietly walks up, writes down "Photoshop"....the apple guy looked at him for a second...and then just handed him a shirt, no questions asked:-P
"He created the currently most distributed free operating system, did he?"
No, he created a kernel, he created a GPL licensed, monolithic and modular kernel.
Linux is _just_ a kernel
I'll have to stick by Theo on this one, there is a lot of whining about Nvidia binary drivers for their video cards, but that seems to be all it is, whining.
Theo is doing something about it, whether or not you agree with his cause, he is _doing_ something at least.
I live in Aston Hall at Texas A&M, so...I'm an Astonaut TOO!
My question though, is what are the main goals of Ubuntu, I was a member of the ekkoBSD, and we died quickly because of lack of manpower, but moreso from lack of a definied focus.
It doesn't really matter where Ubuntu is today, where do you really see it going?
If you can't afford the $800, maybe this isn't directed at you.
Apache Foundation software is used a good deal in the "enterprise", these talks look like they will be pretty intense, and for those only serious enough on the subject to drop the cash (or their employers) on the Con.
It's moreso a tech-Con than a social-rub-shoulders-Con.
I'm sure the Mars Lander's mom came in, yelled at him for moving so slowly, and sleeping most of the day, then cleaned his solar panels, and left in a huff....
Brilliant!

for a cross-platform Hypercard :)
Then we'll see who has the coolest games!
gak, whoops, worthless room-mate, he's supposed to know these metric conversions :P
.5cm is 50mm
100mm == 1cm
"I wish I would have known sooner. Is there a contest next year? - i did not rtfa"
Maybe you should rtfa then....
"He gave Bush a five-page, handwritten letter in which he stated"
;)
I have a new found respect for John Ashcroft, it's pretty respectable that he thinks Bush will read five-pages of his letter.
At least he "still believes"
An obfuscated code contest article has a Microsoft "Get the Facts" ad beneath it.
:-P
Does the OSTG try to be subtle or what?
What are you talking about?!

.....at least xterm works! w00t!
what the fuck.....
Can someone please explain a little more as to how Spotlight using metadata is a "radical" new thing?
I haven't seen any mainstream implementations (WinFS?) of it, but I didn't know it was a brand new concept.

Lighten up, it's the weekend
It did
;)
Enjoy
pssst, you know Star Trek is fake....right?
;)
I think it's quite applicable then
no OS can prevent stupidity/ignorance
"Invent something foolproof, and they'll just make a better fool"
He has a very interesting perspective on pksrc, which I _really_ love.
;)

There's more to a project than just coders
I'd say that headline from back in the day on the Apple site when they brought out iTunes for Windows is more appropriate now.
;))
Doom 3...on a Mac?
Well i'll be damned
(ok, I don't think that's the actual headline, I can't remember _exactly_ what it is..c'mon, i'm not that geeky
"Disclaimer: I think Theo is an arrogant asshole."
;)
Correction, I've worked on a couple OpenBSD forks that can confirm, that yes, Theo is an arrogant asshole.
He does however, stick to what he believes in, a very respectable trait

Kill him
:-D
I actually already predicted the apocalypse for today, let me explain.
;)
I have Dr. Stroustrop (C++ Stroustrop) as one of my lecturers here at Texas A&M.
Yesterday, he said "howdy"
It was weird as hell.
Later on in the class, he made a reference to the HHGTG
Today, I have my calculus exam, on my last calculus exam, I got a 42, exactly
Yesterday was also an eclipse, an obvious sign that the planets are aligning.
I for one welcome our apocalyptic overlords...
I live in Aston Hall at Texas A&M, so...I'm an Astonaut TOO!
