  1. At least we can be sure that Mr. Morrison believed in something that ended up flying in his face.

  7. Re:Still? on Fedora 11 Is Now Available · · Score: 1

Yeah, really. I stick with it because my office is a Redhat shop and this lets me stay close to the Redhat layout and such but still have the option to update and install new stuff to keep my own systems bleeding edge. That said, I think Ubuntu deserves its first-place standing and I get tempted to switch. We'll see how F11 goes. If it wipes out my grub loader (again), I might just jump ship...

Lazy? Wow, I think you're asking for it now. Life's too hectic for me to check my kid's Gmail accounts everyday -- I'm busy watching porn and running the meth lab.

  11. Re:Satellite Radio is a joke on Sirius, XM Merger Gets FCC Approval · · Score: 1

I rely on radio (any kind of radio) for discovering new music. Your iPod/MP3 player isn't going to offer you anything you don't put on it. And I have to admit that I've heard a lot of great new stuff on XM since I subscribed last year. And no DJs and commercials either. Works for me.

  12. Ah, progress on The Javabot Combines Engineering and Coffee · · Score: 1

Cool. So then I can take my perfectly roasted coffee to my office and put it in the piece of sh*t Mr. Coffee machine that looks like it hasn't been cleaned since the Vietnam war. Ah, progress!

  13. Still confused, but in a good way on What's New in Blade Runner - The Final Cut? · · Score: 1

Two things: If Deckard is a Nexus 7, what in this or any other cut says he has to be aware of that? I prefer to believe he thinks he's human because he doesn't know any better. Also, in light of the extended unicorn dream scene, Gaff's last line -- "You've done a man's job sir." -- takes on new meaning: He's now implying that a replicant has proven its worth by doing the work of a human/man.

  14. "slow and steady degradation by moisture" on Boeing Dreamliner Safety Concerns Are Specious · · Score: 1

What studies show that CF is more susceptible to moisture degradation? Boeing is touting the CF airframe's resistance to moisture corrosion, saying the Dreamliner will have higher cabin humidity levels, thus providing a more comfortable passenger environment. (Apparently current recirculation systems remove a lot of H20 from the air to limit corrosion.)

  15. Scraping works too on Evolution of the 'Captcha' · · Score: 2, Insightful

I read some time ago about a guy who wanted to spam a large ISP (Can't recall the company), so he created a porn site, botted the ISP and scraped the capchas, putting them on his porn site where a good old human was waiting to do the work for him. Seems porn can power anything.

  16. Bizarre Install Failure on my Thinkpad on Fedora 7 Released · · Score: 1

I've been running Fedora on an IBM Thinkpad R40 since Core 4 and have been able to upgrade without problems to the successive releases -- until now! Burned the Fedora 7 iso this morning, did the media-check, proceeded with the upgrade/install and it bombed: "Unable to read partition table on /dev/sda". Wow! Interesting, considering the Thinkpad doesn't have SCSI. It's got a 40GB IDE managed with LVM. Can't wait to see what it says on my home system (all SCSI with LVM). Let's just say my confidence in this distro drops way down with this experience.

I had a similar experience with a professor for an AI course. Fortunately, he made it clear on the first day of class that he intended to flunk most of us and that the highest grade he intended to give was a C+. This prompted me to drop the class immmediately. (A protest visit to the ombudsman's office proved fruitless, of course.) Is DJB known as a hard-ass? Don't students know what they're getting into from day one?
