I think the Dixie Chicks are a bad example. They said things people didn't like and were boycotted. Of course, they didn't like being boycotted, but it is the rights of consumers (and radio stations) to not buy (in the case of radio stations, air) things. It's a bit different than the government threatening the Dixie Chicks to shut up.

I remember doing some of that.

In somewhere around 6th-8th grade, I would make up quotations for my essays/papers. However, to be convincing they needed good names since coming up with a good fake name from the top of your head seems to be impossible. So, I just used the names of my old friends in the state where I previously lived. I basically surmised that the effort the teacher needed to make to find out if my sources were real would be too much. She would never check.

Thanks to the internet, this is no longer possible. Almost every existing book in the U.S. can be found listed somewhere online. Thanks for ruining a tactic of schoolchildren, Internet!

Download.com may post comments in blocks. It takes in comments for ten minutes, but only posts them after that period is complete. All the posts, even negative, seem to come in ten minute intervals that end in the minute-digit 8. (The time seems to gradually advance, though. The seconds column is increasing.)

I believe that this accounts for those posts in which an extra ten minutes appears (instead of being an even 2 hours between every bot-post).

Of course, I don't know why they don't show the date and time of which the comment was entered. That kind of information would seem important for catching such trickery.

Math class - You get to perform caculations for how much P2P networks have defrauded artists.

I also had the later compilation version of the X-Wing series that gave a "Top Ace" pilot. I copied that file and (I think) changed the names of the pilots. Then, I used them as my wingmates in the missions. I'm not sure if they actually had the skill of aces or not, but I hope they did, otherwise all that work was for nothing.

  18. Internet Filter on Incorporating Machine Learning into Firefox 2.0? · · Score: 1

I'd like to see a filter for browsing the internet just as there is a bayesian filter for email. This is different than, say, a school filtering the internet because, in this case, the user is the one who wants the filtering.

On the internet, there is now the equivalent of spam pages. People conspire to increase Google hits or take over expired domains and put up their own sites. There is also the case of "joke" sites that people in forums post links to in order to get innocent forum-users to click on them.

So, the filtering would have the goal of filtering out whatever the user doesn't want. The above paragraph is just an example of what a user might want to filter out while browsing the internet. Basically, I'd like to see an adaptive internet filter in Mozilla/FireFox so that I can avoid viewing unwanted pages.
