Idiots like this get elected by promising "free stuff" to the sheeple. For Democrats, that means social program handouts. For Republicans it means tax breaks and corporate welfare. The average voter is too stupid to realize that: 1. Somebody has to pay for this stuff. 2. Politicians don't usually live up to campaign promises. 3. The person is a really lousy leader and/or a crook who is using diversionary tactics to get you to overlook their flaws and vote for them anyway.
To make things even worse, there are still a number of straight-ticket voters who honestly think that Republicans favor small responsible government or that Democrats are the party of the common man.
Hypothetical question. Would it be possible to "repay" a student loan by taking money from credit card cash advances, paying off the student loan, then defaulting on the credit card and filing bankruptcy? Or perhaps during the housing bubble someone could have done the same with a home equity loan? I'm just curious what the legal implications would be here.
Very true. This gold-digger was no doubt looking for a ticket to the ghetto lottery and thinks she found it. If it wasn't for this, she'd probably sprinkle baby oil on the floor at the grocery store so she could "slip and fall" to get some cash.
And every Microsoft OS prior to Vista had something meaningful to offer that the previous version did not (except for Windows ME which was another Vista-like disaster that no IT department would touch).
Does that also apply to corporate welfare/bailout recipients? Or are you one of those mouth-breathing Fox News watching neo-cons who honestly believes that all social welfare is evil but rewarding those who caused bank failures was good for the nation?
The main reason most businesses stayed away from Vista was because there was no business justification for it. If the only thing Vista can do that XP can't is to run slower and look prettier, why would you want to install it? Remember, a business software upgrade is never free even if there is no additional licensing cost. The IT staff time required to upgrade the PCs and networks along with any user downtime or learning curve is not worthwhile just to install a slower and buggier OS that offers no real improvement over XP.
Companies won't even have to move their astroturfing overseas. They'll just have to redefine compensation and promotions.
It's much like what political lobbyists do to get around laws against bribery: call it something else. It's no longer a paid review; it's promotional consideration, a free sample, whatever the law did not yet address. The law will not get rid of paid reviews anymore than campaign finance reform got rid of influence peddling.
This is one of the big problems with cable monopolies. They wouldn't get to force these terrible cable boxes on customers (I've seen a lot of really bad ones) in a competitive market. In the majority of the United States, your choice for TV is Comcast or satellite.
Amtrak gets TONS of subsidies. It would have been gone long ago without them. I'd rather see air travel get subsidies than train, since it is a hell of a lot more effective. Amtrak is useless if you actually need to get somewhere relatively soon. The real problem with Amtrak is poor management and excessive politician interference.
sticker shock from having to spend $800 freaking dollars on an 'HDTV' because of the forced and sudden obsolesence of every TV made before it.
BS. Nobody had to buy a new TV. If you have cable or satellite your old one kept on working with no changes. Converter boxes were widely available for antenna users and were even subsidized by the government. If you spent $800 on a TV it was because you wanted to, not because you had to.
Does this mean you would support a specific law banning every possible behavior that could possibly distract a driver? Sometime discretion and judgment really are necessary parts of the legal system. Zero-tolerance approaches generally don't work out to well.
My thoughts exactly. It would be different if teachers would use the extra time to teach more reading, writing, math, science, etc. but we all know they'd either have another study hall period or more fluff like environmental issues awareness bullshit. Obama is obviously doing this as a favor to the teachers unions as more hours worked means more pay.
I've always wondered why anyone wants to buy a phone at Best Buy. All they do is resell AT&T phones and service, obviously at a mark up. Just go to the carrier's company store and cut out the middleman (and usually get better service).
All this comment proves is that anyone can make any claim they want on the internet and some sucker (anyone who modded it up) will believe them. If this anonymous poster personally observed any of this stuff you would think he could have posted at least one credible link.
This is what's wrong with refusing to walk away from a deal. You have no negotiating leverage. When the other party knows you're committed to buying no matter what, they have no reason to accommodate any request of yours.
I believe the scientific term we're looking for here is the T.O. Effect (Terrell Owens). Just like Milton Bradley, Sammy Sosa or countless other sort-of talented athletes that are a team cancer. We see the same thing in the IT world but its just a lot less public than pro sports.
People like this must be removed from the team. Their talents are never worth sacrificing team cohesiveness for.
Couldn't they just locate some dev servers in India, like companies have been doing for over a decade now?
There will always be some development work that must be done locally, and some can be done from across the world just as easily. It all depends on the task and how much business interaction is required.

Lets let the UN regulate it instead. There are never any politics in UN matters, no sir.

But whose line of calculators would they be replaced with? If TI can't make an "unhackable" calculator, who can?

Why have a smartphone with no data plan? That's kind of like buying a Porsche and never taking it over 50 MPH.

Easy to say when you're not the one paying the attorney's bill.

All of this money goes straight to the IOC and other cronies. Expenses are paid by the host city.
Goldman Sachs may be thought of as greedy, but they're amateurs compared to the Olympic profiteers.

Only if the fluffers were unionized.

The easiest person to bullshit is a bullshitter. The best ones think of their lies as truth, so they become unable to spot other peoples' lies.

Jesus Christ, have you ever heard of a joke?
