  3. Requirements for fitting in. on Humans Hardwired to Believe in Supernatural Deity? · · Score: 1

Here in the U.S. there is a strong tendency to ostracize those who do not believe. There are many states where testimony in court and the right to run for public office require belief in a diety. Think for a minute where politicians would be if they came out admitting the were atheist.

We are hard wired to "fit in".

As has been pointed out by so many other posts, the strong belief thing is large in the U.S. but not other countries.

Wow, it comes from Sony... the company which has let the consumer down so many times.
Wow, I'm not going to buy one of these.

I don't go to movies because the ticket is $7 and then popcorn and a coke is about a billion more dollars. I don't BUY DVDs because the ones I buy usually get viewed only once (they are boring) so everthing I view now is rented from NetFlix (low risk). Finally I get PLENTY to watch with TiVo.

Despite missing the fire fighting reference I still maintain that Chernobyl deaths were for the most part precipitated by a government bent on hiding the problem rather than looking out for it's citizens. Using your logic ship travel would be considerably unsafe because of the Titanic. Pointing out that Chernobyl was a failure of POLITICS rather than technology is not whitewashing.
