Slashdot editors post "provoking" (i.e. flamebait/troll) summaries/articles so frequently that you can essentially rule out stupidity and go straight to malice.
Never. Never-ever-ever-never, rule out stupidity.
In a similar vein, I doubt the Eds are insidious and cunning enough to pull off what you propose. At most, Slashdot has stumbled on a formula that works, from multiple aspects.
Please point out the one country you think has this correct in it's national elections. All "democracies" are self-imposed delusions. Once every four years? Pluuuease. All voting systems in use are flawed, but they work out well for those who know how to work the system, so it's alright I suppose...
None at all. I'm an anarchist, and I like to think I'm creating public awareness this way. And it's not alright, as is obvious by looking around a bit.
It's an internet/newspaper poll, followed by a black-tie dinner and an awards ceremony. I think we can forgive them.
If it creates publicity it creates opinion, and therefore effects other situations. Just because it is grassroot democracy doesn't mean it is unimportant. Every election counts. Even Slashdot polls count, even if it's irrational. People aren't rational beings.
The form requires one to place a vote in all categories, even if I don't know who the people are or if I support none of them. This quite simply bullshit. To support one candidate I'll have support others I care none for.
This is supposed to be politics. This is supposed to mean somthing! How can they err on such a simple thing as a flawed system of voting when it is the foundation of democracy?
Speaks volumes?...Sure. But you too are making an assumption. - Everybody don't value money that greatly. It is quite plausible that someone rationally weights the benefit they'd gain from the boost to their personal economy against having their private life continously invaded after the fact. Then again it would only take one who's "doing it for the money". Unfortunately now we're entering the field of statistic, (unless there is some hidden modifier involved). Statistics and reality are two very different things.
So in conclusion, summa sumarum, and most prominently "thusly": I dunno shit.
Something is deeply wrong. - A slashdotter expressing himself eloquently? Appearing learned while at it? A sign of the apocalypse for sure.
On topic, I think many games already express a specific style, even if it often is more subtle. This is unavoidable as long as different people take notice of different things; different people express themselves differently. This is unavoidable as no man is objective in perception. Conways law is satisfied.
A quick comparison between the releases of gamehouses should show this. It's often striking how varied models of humans can be. Faces especially.
For what you're suggesting to work, you'd have to reverse time itself aswell. However, having done so you'd instantly return to the reversal point, ultimately having achieved nothing. Interesting thought experiemnt, not impossible, but completely unobservable to the degree that it doesn't even qualify as a virtual phenomena. Lunatics with razors would stab it to death shouting "Occam! Occam!", failing to see the simple charm of the idea on its own.
I don't think it will effect Open Source much at all. However user friendly it gets it can't get much quicker and simpler than a GUIed-over apt-get, such as Synaptic found in Ubuntu. Then again there's a lot of Open Source software availible for Windows aswell... Maybe the submitter was questioning the stand of Open Source vs. closed source on the Windows platform alone?
I just want to slouch in a recliner and have my field of vision covered by the image. A normal projector has such a horribly low resolution that this isn't a very good idea, but I figured that with a HDTV projector you could get away with it even in widescreen format. Since they're going to be mass produced they should be affordable.
Then again, finding something to watch which actually has the right perspective for this (That is; not what feels like an inch from my face like most horror/thriller flicks.) might be difficult. You need movies in the style of 2001: A Space Odyssey to really enjoy having your field of vision filled up...
Nevermind. Got mod points. Allowed to be an idiot.

Ubuntu is good because it took me a moment while reading the replies here to remember that I'm using Ubuntu Breezy. Tech is usually only noticed when something is wrong, so the hallmark of good tech is that it goes unnoticed.
Ubuntu can do eveyrthing Windows did, and thanks to programs such as Cedega, I an even play Guild Wars. The era of Linux on the desktop is NOW.
DRM is a pipe-dream. As long as I can get music out of my speakers I can record the sound and distribute it online. Most CD drives you install in your computer come with an analogue-out port which you can connect to your sound card, and all you have to do to rip past the copy hinderace is record from that source. IIRC newer SoundBlaster cards come with a native function that lets you record exactly what you hear from your speakers.
This is a clash of ideology if anything is. Open Source versus... Open Source? Enter Oroborus. Hackers rejoice. If this project gets off the ground it will be smashed to pieces and rebuilt time and time again until we have the most stable software on the face of the Earth or we have proven that 'security' such as this is a mathematical impossibility.
Yeah, Stunts rocked. But today if I'd encounter a game where even touching the railing meant insta-gib I'd throw a hissy-fit. Still, Stunts rocked. I built a track in the editor so long and full of things that no one ever made a full lap on it.
Fatal Error: Driving on the wrong side of the damn road.
Frivolties aside, if realism isn't the goal, why stick to our boring terran transportation? I think the game would be really cool if some ideas were stolen^W^W^W inspiration was taken from Wipeout, letting some big air jumps enter the game. Why not take a little from Tribes aswell and add the jet boost-thing? Mix well and the result is a toe curling orgasm^W^W^W hit for sure.
I'll confirm that. I've got a license for XP Pro, and still use the pirated corporate edition. Only thing that bugs me is that my own key won't work with this version.
It's a poetic statement of fact, on every point. And it's the action of _not_ standing there taking it up the ass, but building awareness and a sense of community. If having an opinion and standing up for it is self-induglent, then by all means; call us self-indulgent. Call us criminals too, and we'll smirk knowingly.
Dust settling, the manifesto wasn't written for the hordes. It was written for the peers. Guess who's opinion it is which is worth a damn.
So this all boils down to mating in your mind? Intellectual or artistic pursuits mean notihng to you. No sense of brotherhood nor a desire for progress. All you want to do is fuck.
Shits to the actual manifesto, for being the most self-indulgent piece of writing ever created.
How can it be self-indulgent if it doesn't speak the mind of one person, but a million? And it does speak the mind of a million. Probably several million. Several million all alike. Several million who now know you're not one of us.
The manifesto is true for us from the beginning to the end. And just where the heck is it self-indulgent? Where?? Are you really so naive as to believe people wish you well?
It's hard to evaluate this comment without an example; and such a bold statement requires an example.
Well, according mbkennel, who also replied to my post, with differential equations forumals and series work with radians. I take it this is to imply it doesn't work with degrees. None of my teachers have ever mentioned that _it doesn't work_ without radians, while most of the class is under the impression that radians and degrees are a matter of convenience. I've studied diff equations at two different educational facilities, and nothing like it or anything along the lines ever appeared.
Your comment about Russell and syntax and "understanding the reaches of space and time" sounds like the mathematical equivalent of New Age philosophy math majors that aren't interested in asking about convergence properties of Fourier series until you have fully explored the deeper meaning of adding infinitely many objects and whether the result is really an object at all.
I'm mostly approaching the issue from the perspective of physics while I'm supposedly a Comp. Sci. student myself, so I can't really say about math students... However, I really do appreciate your example. It namely stands to show yet another fault in my education. The teachers I've had have mentioned that with enough sine curves stacked upon each other you can have any wave form, but when they do that they fail to link the example with the math. They can write it down, but so far no one had attempted to explain it. In similar situations, if we take an additional step such as convergence (always without the spontaneous inquiry of a student), the teacher draws no parallel between the additional step and the original example.
That's the perfect example of a subject where *no one* "understands" any of it. I understand it. So does Robert Anton Wilson, and a lot of non-scientists. Part of the reason I understand it is because I don't sneer at philosophy, but tackle it and move on. - Those philosophical questions which arise in QM are not idle distractions, but intellectual challenges.
I'm aware that there is no "why" in science. I've long abandoned the very notion. However, there is _always_ a "how" in science. It is this "how" which I pursuit, and it should always be possible to be understood with example. I'll leave the "why" and "what" to religion, and hope it will stay there. When "why" becomes "because the teacher said so", I throw a tantrum. The teacher isn't a preist.:P
Sorry about any hints of viscera in my text. I get frustrated.

Couldn't this system be defeated by using a Photonic Band Gap texture? That is, such a structure as found on the wings of the Morpho butterfly.
