... with the bath water is one of the problems in fighting spam.

I use Mail Washer as a pre-processor for my email accounts. It has now turned out to take more time to weed out legitimate messages.

More and more of my legitimate email from distro lists I have subscribed to from cNet, Woody's Windows Watch and even obscure lists such as Amusing Facts Daily now show up in the ORBD and other spam lists it consults.

For instance, just coming back from vacation I had 1200 messages across five accounts. 70% were tagged as spam from a spam list. 20% of those were legitimate distro lists.

The independent spam lists do a good job of catching most of the spam, but it also catches too many legitimate lists. I try to send an email to the list admin letting them know, but typically they respond that it's not worth the effort trying to get off the lists.

I've gone through a something just like it where I was Mudrered Electronically by my ISP.

I do agree with putting your money where your mouth is, but preaching to "non-converts" when you don't have the actual goods to back it up borders on futile.

  5. Domination of an Industry on Ebay buys PayPal · · Score: 3, Insightful

It is the domination of an industry. Period. There are no viable alternatives to either.

eBay has 85% of the market.

PayPal has almost the same numbers.

What you get is one company that can control everything in the process of selling goods auction style online. Fees are raised, people who don't play the game get squeezed out.

Yahoo has seen the light and has stopped their auction services in every country except America. Where do the send the traffic? eBay of course.

I like eBay and I like PayPal. I don't like the combination. eBay has shown a historical record of squeezing out the little guy. They will continue this with PayPal who already has draconian methods of handling customer service.

This is a monopoly of an industry pure and simple. The only thing left for ebay to buy is a delivery company and it will be complete.

One of the chief metrics used to determine a monopoly is viable competition. On this web we use it all the time to look at Microsoft. Here it applies as well. Is there a viable alternative to eBay. No. Is there a viable alternative to PayPal. No.

Anyone who claims that this movie is profound or is making a statement hasn't been living in this world that long.

Well, now I am safe ... it'll be over by the time it's released.

    This is nuts.

"Watching programming legend John Carmack manipulate the lone marine through the claustrophobic corridors, it was easy to get caught up in the revolutionary steps embodied by the technology on display." I thought the whole idea behind games was so that PEOPLE could play them.

File downloads are clearly better on the internet, as are games.

Message boards, though, suck on the internet. There are islands of information our there, but nothing like it should be. For instance, for HTML help I go to one message board, for domain name advice another and to web hosting even another one.

Everyone remember Interlink, Fidonet, WWIVNet, RIME (PC Relay), etc? These were message networks that were all inclusive. Every topic under the sun was available and the messages were public. You could download your messages using a QWK compatible door and read them offline. Those were the days.

The closest thing we have now is USENET, where the noise to signal ratio is too high.

PC Pursuit is another vestiage of the BBS age. It was a service by Sprint that allowed you to X.25 into other POPs around the country for a low monthly fee. For instance, I could dial my local sprint number, connect to a pad in Boston and jump on Channel 1 with no long distance.

It's when the two get together you have horrible perceptions. Heavy handed tactics ... school districts crying poor ... Microsoft wanting money ...

Going to Linux solves the money issue and most of the potential piracy issues. Is it a victory for open source? Not so much as it is a victory for living within your means.

  21. Another Review .... on Bitter Java · · Score: 2

    Opening paragraph:

"This book discusses some design patterns and their issues and solutions for Java programming. The author uses VisualAge for Java, Websphere and DB2 as his tools, but the principles can be applied to any Java project. The codes are developed with JDK 1.2.2. Some, but not all, of them have been compiled, but not tested, in JDK 1.3.1. The author uses the term "antipattern" for a flaw in design. In addition, he attempts to have a unique descriptive term for each antipattern. If you jump from one chapter to another without specific order, you might be puzzled by all the new terms. Fortunately, the book has a good index on the keywords and the pages they are described."

Yep, but in a buyer's market you look at two things:

Availablity of CCIEs -- They aren't as exclusive as they once were.

Costs to Secure CCIEs -- The situation used to exist where there was zero help or preperation available for CCIE exams. Now you can take the boot camps, etc. It waters down the field.

  23. It's a buyers market right now ... on Which IT Certifications for Specific IT Jobs? · · Score: 5, Insightful

The supply of tech professionals for operations, non-development, is far outpaced by the demand. Right now it is simply a buyer's market. What does that mean for folks who hire:

    1) We can demand experience. We don't have to take the time to train someone and get them up to speed.

    2) We don't have to offer the salaries and benefits we did two years ago.

    3) Certifications aren't as valuable as they once were. The last boom in certifications was the Cisco program and that has stagnated as the technology and programs have become entrenched. It's all cyclical with certification programs anyway. You have to be in at the beginning to reap the benefits.

The other fact you need to face is the best way to secure employment is not through classifieds and monster.com, but personal contact with people in the field. Join user groups, go to vendor tech demos and start meeting people.

    Good luck.
